Hi Pat, How do you know that William was still alive in 1841/42? It wasn't compulsary for vicars to state that the father was "deceased" on a marriage certificate, although they often did. In addition perhaps he was missing; i.e. had run off after an argument or had been mugged, murdered and left in a ditch somewhere so no-one knew for sure where he was? Having said this, there were plenty of deaths registered for Wm Goulds after 1837 and I guess there were a few more before then too. Have you found these entries in the church registers? They may say more, i.e. Wm Gould h. of Jane aged X? Dec 1838 Gould William Eton 6 224 Mar 1852 Gould William Eton 3a 221 Mar 1857 Gould William Eton 3a 234 Sep 1874 Gould William 83 Eton 3a 276 If he did survive perhaps he remarried. If so, you need to check the subsequent marriages of Wm Goulds too...
