    3. Does anyone have any tips on how to get more out of the 1911 census website than is currently apparantly available? The 1901 census website for example allowed you to link various family members by using the codes attached to each name . Is www.1911census.co.uk the only site? And is BMD information available anywhere for free after the current cut off date for FreeBMD? Donald Hatch Bilthoven NL

    3. Hi Donald Yes there is currently only one access fo rthe 1911, the only place I am aware of to use it for free (but prints are chargeable) is at Kew which appears out of your range Use the index, find a person you are fairly sure is yours, enter them in the other person in the household box with just the surname of the person in the surname box with place of residence if required , make note (copy and paste the results into notepad or similar) not forgetting to add back the first person found You can take that one stage further by leaving the other person in the household on and selecting wild card in advanced search then add A* and search, copy and paste the result if any and repeat through the alphabet (B* etc) For freebmd, past the point they are transcribed (coverage charts are on the site) you can use the page images (from the home page) as follows :- Births to 1977 Marriages to 1960 Deaths to 1935 There are also pay per view or subscription sites some a lot cheaper than others Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Does anyone have any tips on how to get more out of the 1911 census > website > than is currently apparantly available? 3. Hi Donald, If you look at the blog on the 1911 site there should be something about how to get more by using wildcards to find other members of the household on searches without having to buy the schedules. If you're stuck email me off the list with an example "problem" and I'll try to talk you through it. 1911 is only available through their website or at TNA in Kew. However, I know of one University which has purchased some sort of access allowing their members to see the full schedules for free. That said, I can't see there being much call for it in the Netherlands to prompt such a thing. One thing you might be able to do, if you know anyone who goes to Kew regularly is to ask them to look at entries you have found on the index. They can print them there for a few pence or take a photo of the screen which is legible for free. Do you mean is the GRO Index available for free? Yes, it is in a lot of libraries/archives/record offices etc in UK and also at Kew and ONS at Southport. The years they hold varies. Many LDS libraries have it too if you have one near you. Failing that it depends how much you want to search it-bearing in mind it's flaws, but you can subscribe to a site which has it all as either a full member (annual fee) or on pay as you go. I use the latter when I get stuck and have a relatively small time frame to search as it works out at 10p per page which is not bad. Of course, if it is an area outside BKM you want then the local BMD sites are worth looking at from UKBMD. These are free indexes often with more detail than GRO (mother's maiden names earlier) where checking for spouses is easy (no guessing between the 2 or 4 names on the GRO page) and where the index is accurate.
