    1. BIRCH - Esther & George
    2. Is there anyone out there that confirm to me that Esther and George BIRCH below are brother and sister?? I have in my tree an Esther BIRCH born Jan 1814 and married John BRANDON in 1836. My Esther has a brother, George, born Dec 1828, both from Chesham. I already know that Esther's parents are William and Mary Birch. I have been contacted by someone who's distant relative was George BIRCH from Chesham, born 1828 and married and had a son, William, in 1870. What are is the likelihood that this is the same George? Can anyone out there point me in the right direction other than a long trip to the RC in Aylesbury to go through the Parish Registers to see how many George BIRCH's there were. Hope someone can help! TIA Caroline

    2. Alexandra Coles
    3. I've looked for Lizzie using every combo and trick I can think of and just can't find her.......is there some kind soul out there up for a challenge or does anyone have any suggestions? Elizabeth Verde GARDINER was born 4 Mar 1874 so should be 27 at census date. Born in Amersham, kitchen maid in the Lion Hotel in High Wycombe in the 1891 census. Last spotted at the baptism of her illegitimate daughter Elsie in Datchet in 1896 (Elsie is listed as a boarder with Fanny & Katie Hopkinson in Denham in 1901 - no known connection there). Lizzie's widowed mother and siblings moved from Chipping Wycombe to Datchet some time between 1891 and 1901, but she isn't with them in the 1901 census. Elizabeth pops up again in Datchet in 1902 marrying Henry Thomas CRUTCH aka Thomas Henry CRUTCH on Christmas Day. Can't find him either in 1901 <sigh> but I have even less clues to go on with him as I don't know where he was from....he should be 26/27 if his age on their marriage certificate is to be believed, was a coal carter, and his father was also Henry Thomas CRUTCH. Hoping someone else has the magic touch.... Alex in Auckland NZ Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Movies. http://au.movies.yahoo.com

    2. karenza4
    3. I do not have access to the Centre for Buckingham Studies, nor a Family History Centre. Does anyone have details for registers for Westbury BKM, especially with regard to MAKEPEACE and FENEMORE people? At this stage I am especially interested in Ellinor/Eleanor Makepeace, christened 25 Dec 1812 in Westbury, my 2nd great grandmother. In 1834 she married in Westbury, to George Davis, and in 1841 census Ellinor and family are living in Finmere, OXF. Ellinor Makepeace is probably the dau of John Makepeace, christened 1787 Westbury, and Hepzibah Fenemore christened 1788. So far I have seven children likely for John and Hepzibah, but no access to relevant parish records and to myself confirm or otherwise. Not yet found anywhere to obtain fiche, hardcopy nor cd, for Westbury parish records, though some marriages on available on the IGI, but would like such. Jo. Shropshire UK.

The Harleian Society, a charity founded in 1869 to transcribe, print and publish heraldic visitations of counties, parish registers or any manuscripts relating to genealogy, family history and heraldry, has published over 120 Heraldic Visitations. Because of its early start, most of its publications are now out of print, rare and expensive to purchase on the secondhand book market. Recently, in association with Archive CD Books, these volumes have been reissued on CD-ROM. They are listed on the Harleian Society web site at: http://harleian.co.uk/ Select the option: 'Back Copies of Harleian Society Volumes ' and look at both the Visitation Series and New Series. Heraldic Visitations were also published by others, such as F W Weaver (Somerset 1531, 1573 (1885) and Herefordshire 1569 (1886)) and W C Metcalfe (Buckinghamshire 1566 (1883), Gloucestershire 1682-3 (1884) and Northamptonshire 1564, 1618-9 (1887)). I am not aware of any reprints of these 19th century publications. Lists of published visitations are given in Cecil Humphrey-Smith's 'Armigerous Ancestors' (1997) and also in an article in the 1994 edition of Keith A Johnson's and Malcolm R Sainty's 'Genealogical Research Directory'. The latter includes the LDS film numbers of many of the published items. >Do you know why the Bucks Visitation was not published? The College of Arms holds the original manuscripts of all the Heraldic Visitations and has a policy of not publishing any, because it considers them to be resources solely for its own research. So all publications use the many manuscript copies of the visitations, created by various people with varying accuracy. The job of publishing visitations is very time consuming involving much collation of the various copies plus other checks. Buckinghamshire visitations published so far are: 1566 (by W C Metcalfe) and 1634 (Harleian Society vol. 58). The 1574-5 Buckinghamshire visitation is quite close in date to the published 1566 visitation and is just one of many not yet published. 3. Thank you for the reply. It turns out that the university library here has most of the Harleian Society publications - or at least they are listed in their catalog, what's on the shelf may be another matter - and once the students are on holiday I think it would be interesting to go look at them. University libraries that offer a Phd in history often have some interesting stuff. Liane

    3. After checking further sources, such as the 'Catalogue of the Herald's Visitations; with references to many other valuable genealogical and topgraphical manuscripts in the British Museum', no author, second edition, published in 1825, I suspect that 'Armigerous Ancestors' was wrong in indicating a 1674 visitation for Buckinghamshire in BM Harleian manuscript 1533 - I think it should have been the 1574 visitation. Unfortunately it is known that 'Armigerous Ancestors' contains quite a few such errors . . . This makes no difference to the need to see the original Harleian manuscript 1533, since the Bucks 1574 Visitation has also not been published. Anybody know what that >means? The book is by R Sims, originally published in 1849. It has been reprinted several times since, for example on paper by the Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, USA, and in 'Armigerous Ancestors' by Cecil Humphrey-Smith (1997). The reference 1533 is to the Harleian Manuscript number in the British Museum's (BM) collection of manuscripts. Cecil Humphrey-Smith's 'Armigerous Ancestors (1997) has a table which indicates that this particular BM manuscript contains a copy of the Herald's Visitation of Buckinghamshire for both the year's 1634 and 1674. The 1634 Visitation was published by the Harleian Society in 1909 in their Visitation Volume LVIII - although the text for this book came mainly from another Harleian Manuscript: MS Eng. Misc. C. 17 in the Bodleian Library, Oxford . . . There is no Washington family pedigree in this volume, though there are a few stray references to the Washington name in other pedigrees. This suggests that the Washington pedigree is in the 1674 Visitation, which has not been published. So you would need to examine, or have examined, the original manuscript in the British Museum. 'fo 204b' refers to the reverse of folio (sheet) number 204 in that manuscript. Cheers, John John Addis-Smith Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, England
