    1. Question regarding owners of land in the late 1700's
    2. Tina Connell
    3. Hi, Some time ago I purchased a will dated in the late 1700's of a great x a few grandfathers of mine and have just been reading through it again in the hopes of perhaps trying to learn some more about my family. In the will this grandfather mentions 3 pieces of land/property - 1 in Middlesex which mentions a copyhold cottage with the lands buildings and appurtenances but then says in the occupation of someone, a freehold cottage and lands buildings and appurtenances in Chipping Wycombe, Bucks and then 3 acres of land in Prince Wyrardisbury, Bucks (I have just written it as it is spelt in the will) but what I was wondering is if somebody might please be able to tell me anything at all please about exactly what this means and what the difference between freehold and copyhold might mean please? as well as if it might be possible to find out anything else at all about the family or properties by tracing any records of them and if anyone might please be able to tell me how I would t! hen go about that please? I would really appreciate any advice. Thankyou very much in advance. Tina Connell

Very few people went to this trouble, but just regrouped or even remarried, if they were reasonably sure the first wife would not surface/ One way of being sure was if the man had killed her - but he could hardly say that. -- Eve McLaughlin Author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians Secretary Bucks Genealogical Society

    1. POLLARD/GIBBARD in Wing or Waddesdon?
    2. Alexandra Coles
    3. I am trying to locate the deaths or burials of Joram POLLARD and his wife Sarah. They had several children in Wing from 1789 to 1799, but are not in the 1841 census for Wing, so I imagine they died sometime in the interim. I could not find a suitable burial record for either in the Wing parish registers. Joram POLLARD was baptised in Wing in 1768 and I have located a likely entry for his marriage on the IGI, between Joram POLLARD and Sarah GIBBARD in Waddesdon in 1788, so Waddesdon is my next lead to follow up. As our local LDS centre is now closed until Feb I won't have a chance to order in the Waddesdon films until then, and they can then take up to three months to arrive....so I am hoping SKS might be able to do a lookup in the Waddesdon records for me (or alternatively already have info or a connection to either the POLLARDs or the GIBBARDs). I have the NBI (2nd ed) but there are no Joram Pollards at all, and no likely Sarah Pollards. Regards Alex in Auckland NZ Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Derek Tripp Flatford Mill Suffolk I believe a declarartion can be sought after 7 years, but there is no obligation to do so. Clearly, for a second marriage to be legal, a missing former spouse should have been declared dead but then if those around either didn't know or were happy to turn a blind eye, it may not have been done. It is a legal process so any records would reside with the relevant court or archive repository. John B Leic., Eng "Helpful Advice & urls for London Listers" at http://londongenhelp.blogspot.com/

    3. Can anyone shed any light here... or point me to the appropriate place at least... Elisha Somerton, born in Syresham c 1862 was my great grandfather. He married Annie Tew and had at least two daughters, Ada (also known as Nellie) and Clara, There is a family secret buried in the past somewhere though, which is rumoured to have something to do with horse theft or similar, and Elisha changed his name to Frederick, presumably to escape the past. Elisha was living in Leckhampstead Bucks at 1881 census, but I cannot find anything else about him.... where could I find out if he was a guest at his majesty's pleasure or whatever? Gill Kelly
