I can't provide an answer to the query about "Em'ee" (could it be emigree meaning travelling people?), though LOVELL is certainly recognised as a gypsy surname. Can anyone tell me what the phrase "by the roadside" might signify on three baptisms in my GADSDEN family? Bucks origins are indicated for the parents, James and Sarah GADSDEN (no marriage found yet) but their first three children are recording among "baptizings" in parish of St Mary's Whitechapel, Thomas 1757, John 1759 and Sarah 1760 - all with location given as "by the roadside". Other baptisms in the same pages give more understandable locations, like "in Church Lane" or "in Black Lion Yard". Various explanations have been offered me but none of these seem satisfactory. Does the phrase indicate that the parents were of no fixed abode, travellers in some way? The fact that the children were baptised over a three to four year period in the same parish seems to suggest that the family was stationary for that time at least. One well-known genealogist gave the theory that "by the roadside" means the family were living on the main street of the area at that time - but again, other baptisms in the same group and date show "in the High Street" so why would "by the roadside" be the term used for the Gadsdens? Anyone got any ideas on this? An Annie RICHMOND (born about 1861 in Haddenham, Bucks) married into a branch of my husband's family in Wells, Somerset in 1886 when she married a Frederick MARSHALL. I think I've found her on the 1881 census as a Ward Attendant at the Three Counties Asylum at Stotford in Bedfordshire. On the 1871 census at Haddenham Bucks she is described as a 10 year old niece of a John RICHMOND (74) widower Also described as his niece is an Elizabeth RICHMOND (unmarried) aged 35 acting as his housekeeper born Haddenham and there is a 4 year old nephew, Horace RICHMOND. I may be wrong but it looks as if Elizabeth might be the mother of Ann and Horace. Can anyone shed any light on this? On the 1851 Bucks Census (Familyhistoryonline) I've found an Elizabeth RICHMOND who was the daughter of a Joseph & Hannah RICHMOND but what I really could do with is the 1861 census entry. Ann called her first child Joseph Horace Richmond MARSHALL so all the above seems feasible. By 1891 Ann was living in Bath and by 1901 she had died. This list has been helpful to me in the past and I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me again. With best wishes Pat Hase http://www.wsmfhs.org.uk/
Hi Neil, In the US, all the LDS Family History Centers have a subscription to Ancestry, so you can go to the nearest center and view census entries without charge. Does anyone know if the Centres in the UK have the same service? Does anyone use www.ancestry.com or www.ancestry.co.uk I tried to use the 1871 census index. Whatever pay I tried to subscribe I always get: "The page cannot be displayed" If someone uses ancestry or has access to the London 1871 Census could they look up the record of: 1871 UK Census John Gurnett aged 55 living in London born in Swanbourne Bucks living in Plumstead, London with wife and children I'd like the address and household record for this man and family. And I'd be very grateful! Thanks Neil Rees Bucks, UK
Hi Everyone, I know this not the right sight for what i am seeking, but could somebody point me in the right direction please? I am trying to locate the deaths of Muriella Octavia KING (born 1859) and Elsa Marguerite KING (born 1882). They went from Australia to England to live in 1885 with Thomas KING who died in Middlesex, London on 20 November 1886. Muriella is the wife of Thomas and Elsa was his daughter. It is possible that Elsa married and therefore who knows what her married name might have been then. I am sorry to ask this of this site, but i don't know where to go to. Many thanks Alan Australia
Hi everyone, I am trying to find out the full date of birth of Mary Inns BUTCHER who was born in Whaddon sometime in 1845. Her parents were William BUTCHER and Mary FLETCHER. Also i would like to find out the maiden name of the mother of Mary FLETCHER who married Joseph FLETCHER. Her christian name was Martha and i suspect her maiden name might have been INNS. I would appreciate any help to push me in the right direction. Many thanks Alan Australia
Hello to the List: I'm looking for the marriage of James GADSDEN to Sarah (maiden name unknown) pre 1757 in Buckinghamshire, possibly Stoke Goldington or environs. I base the approximate marriage date on the birth of the couple's first child Thomas 1757. Subsequent children were John 1759 and Sarah 1760. All three were baptised St Mary's Whitechapel - there is reason to suppose that their parents moved from Bucks to settle in the Stepney area, presumably just before the birth of Thomas 1757. So far despite much digging a suitable contender for this James GADSDEN has not been found and it's a major brick wall in my own GADSDEN line. If anyone else is researching the surname in Buckinghamshire (or Hertfordshire), or has any suggestions for avenues I could follow to find the marriage, I would be most grateful. Best Wishes, Rosemary Dixon-Smith www.genealogyworld.net
I'm descended from the first of the three marriages of my 3xgt.grandfather, William STRANKS. This took place at Hardwick on 12 October 1802, and the bride was Elizabeth WALEBY. The groom was "of Bierton" (although he was born at Hardwick), and the bride was "of Hardwick". Elizabeth died in Jan 1808, shortly after the birth of her second child, and her stated age at death suggests that she was born around 1780. I have never been able to discover anything else about my 3xgt.grandmother, Elizabeth. A Thomas WALESBY is listed in the Posse Comitatus as a servant at Steeple Claydon, and there are three men with the surname WHALE at Marsh Gibbon. The IGI lists quite a number of WALBY events in various parts of the country, but it seems not to be a Bucks name. I was wondering if anybody else has a Waleby (or variants) in Bucks, or could suggest where Elizabeth might have originated. Rosemary Jenkins North Yorks, UK

If he merely served in Bucks as part of the Thames Valley Police force, try the Police Museum at Sulhamsted, Oxford. However, if he is a serving policeman, I doubt they will give you any information about him. If so, then the usual route of telephone directories or searching the elctoral register on disc may be necessary. -- Eve McLaughlin Author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians Secretary Bucks Genealogical Society
Hello, I have just found the message below in the archives from 2001. So I had to join. James MUNN is my GG-Grandfather. I just recieved his marriage cert today where he very helpfully lists his father's name as "Dead". :-) So it was great to find this message regarding him and his family. I would love to know more about the story below. regards Glenda From: Eve McLaughlin <DisplayMail('#118;#97;#114;#110;#101;#121;#115;#46;#100;#101;#109;#111;#110;#46;#99;#111;#46;#117;#107;','#101;#118;#101;'); eve@varneys.demon.co.uk> Subject: Re: [BKM] HUME /MUNN family of Dagnall ?? The MUNN family definitely lived in Dagnall (Edlesborough, Bucks). In fact one, Daniel, faced with keeping up with an extravagant second wife, actually robbed a shop and incidentally killed the elderly shopkeeper. I wrote this up in a fairly recent issue of Bucks Ancestor. James, aged 8, was the son of Edward and Hannah Munn of Dagnall (1851 census) - Eve McLaughlin --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - all new features - even more fun!
