    3. Hi Caz The latest on the Bucks Genealogical Society's 1861 Census CD is as follows: As most people are aware the release of the CD has been much delayed, as it is taking the company responsible for this phase (incorporation of the BGS's transcribed census data into the search engine database etc) very much longer than they anticipated and we are naturally continually pressing them re. their slipping deadlines. I have been told that there are hopes that an 'alpha' version will be ready any time now for testing by a few of us and after this we may/may not go to a 'beta' version (i.e. a final pre-production version for testing). Then the production CDs will be made. 3. Hello Celia Thank you for your reply, I had seen the NICHOLS/SHOULER marriage on the IGI and have been in contact with someone else who is researching Mary, we are both of the same mind that her mother was Martha SHOULER, but it is strange that the other John NICHOLS married a Mary!!. I dont suppose you know where I can find the bap records that would confirm it I will let you know if and when I have confirmation. Where does your connection come from. My Mary "Martha" married a John GIBBARD, she was my eighth great grandmother. regards Ann

According to the 1901 census my Great grandfather Alfred Backhouse was recorded as being aged 35, living in Willesden, London. The surname was recorded as Bachhouse. In the 1891 census the surname was recorded as Backhaus, his age was 24. In 1881 he was recorded correctly as Alfred Backhouse, aged 15 living with the rest of his family in Leighton Buzzard, Bedford they are John Backhouse head aged 63 Mary A Backhouse Wife aged 56 ( I believe this to be Mary Ann Banks ). Charlotte Backhouse Daur aged 20 Louisa Backhouse Daur aged 18 Charles Backhouse Son aged 13 Dwelling was the Old Workhouse, does this mean that they were in poverty???. Those that have access to the 1861/51 census may be looking for more children than what is shown as John & Mary were married in 1844. Johns Father was a William Backhouse. I am asking the Bucks group as I have learned that Leighton Buzzard, used to be divided into two and half was in Buckinghamshire. Any help in this endeavour would be greatly appreciated. 1. CHANDLER query/look up please
    2. Hi Lister, I have a query about my great grandfather Alfred CHANDLER, born 1867/9 in Wendover. I have found him with my great grandmother, Elizabeth (nee PEARCE), on the 1891 and 1901 census but cannot find him on the 1881 census. He was married on 27th December 1890 aged 23 (I have his marriage certificate), although the 1891 census has his age as 22 and the 1901 census as 34 (a 2 year difference). There is another Alfred CHANDLER born in 1863 but his father is Thomas and my Alfred's father is David. If anyone has the 1871 census could they kindly look him up for me? His parents are David and Martha CHANDLER and they would be in the Wendover/Lee/Swans Bottom area. Many thanks. Eileen

They were sort of lay preachers who went round houses or to charity buildings like soup kitchens and tried to bring the poor into the church. Most of them were in the big cities where a lot of people had fallen away from the church. I known that some lists (just names) of town missionaries exist. It was pretty wearing work, done with conscience , and some of them added helping social reformers locate and assist deserving poor families (Charles Booth went round with Town Missionaries when he was doing his reports on the state of the London poor). Some got worn out, and I do know that there seem to have been s few who retired to a kind of sheltered housing in Bucks - somewhere in the south east of the county, maybe Penn, or the Chalfonts, from memory. > -- Eve McLaughlin Author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians Secretary Bucks Genealogical Society
