    1. SCOTT of Northchurch/Berkhamstead, Herts, 1830s and Cuddington, Bucks, early 1800s. WALKER, EMBEREY, COX, SANDAL.
    2. Jesse Luke Walker
    3. Hi Listers, I thought I'd have a crack at finding relatives on this branch. Sorry for the multiple-list posting, but it does cover three counties (leaving out Nottinghamshire and Lancashire). Eliza SCOTT (b. 1834 at Northchurch, Herts., d. 1890s at Beeston, Notts.) was my 3rd great grandmother, having married on 11 Jan 1866 at Northchurch to John WALKER (b. 1832 at Beeston, d. 1907 at Nottingham). Her parents were Thomas SCOTT (b. 1812 at Cuddington, Bucks.) and Sarah EMBEREY (b. 1807 at Islip, Oxon). I've done a little research on Sarah's ancestry, but have so far found Thomas' to be a bit trickier. Sarah's parents were John EMBEREY & Dinah SANDAL, who married in 1805 at Islip. Dinah was from either Kidlington, Islip itself or Charlton-on-Otmoor. The register states the latter. One or two of Sarah's siblings were connected to the COX family of the Islip area. There were many variations of the family name: EMBREY, EMERY, AMERY, etc. Is anyone on these lists related to these families? Kind regards, Jesse Luke Walker, London, UK. -- Descended from the WALKER family of Beeston in Nottinghamshire. http://www.bongoots.com/

    1. Canon Graves - BKM
    2. Fred Wall
    3. I have recently acquired parts of some memoirs written by my grandmother in the 1930's and she refers several times to Canon Graves as a benefactor of the WALL family in the late 19th century. Evidently my Great-Grandfather Joseph WALL, 1841-1921, worked at some time for the Canon, who encouraged the family to further the education of their oldest son William 1863- ???. William, it is said, went to University and upon graduating opted not to go into the ministry but became an organist at "Curzon Street Chapel" and then a foreign correspondent of some sort. I have no concrete information on William, apart from his Stokenchurch OXF baptism details and some census entries. My question is about the good Canon, in an attempt to fill in details of the WALL family in BKM. Rev John Graves was the owner of Bradenham Manor, whilst Rev M. Graves was the headmaster of the Grammar School at Marlow. Which of these worthies was the Canon? I suspect the former as being the more likely employer of Joseph who in 1871 was a Woodman, resident at Bradenham Lodge. Any clarification would be most welcome. Thanks Fred Wall Nanaimo, BC, Canada

    1. Henry WATTS gent, Winslow, Whaddon, 1530s
    2. Tompkins, M.L.
    3. Does anyone know anything about a Henry Wattes, gentleman, who seems to have been knocking around Winslow and the surrounding area in the 1530s, and was of Hurst in Berkshire in 1556? My reason for asking is that, as I've mentioned before, I'm studying the people of Great Horwood between 1400 and 1600 for a PhD, principally through the manorial court rolls. My main focus is on the people who held land there, and I need to place each landholder in his social context - how wealthy he was, how much land he had and where, how he made his living, who he was connected to, where he lived. But of course not everyone who held land in Great Horwood was resident in the village. I have quite a bit of the sort of information I need for the resident landholders, from the Great Horwood records, but very little for most of the absentee landholders. Many them were probably peasants living in the neighbouring villages, like Little Horwood, Whaddon, Nash, Thornborough, Addington, Adstock and Winslow, and it is quite difficult to discover anything about such people in the 15th and early 16th centuries - the records just don't exist. However I occasionally come across someone who appears to be from a little higher up the social ladder, from the classes whose records do often survive, and it may be that some information about him is already in print somewhere. He may even be an ancestor of someone subscribing to this list. So I'm planning to make two or three postings about people of this sort, in the hope that someone may be able to point me towards some information about them. Ideally economic information, but even purely genealogical data would be gratefully received. And of course if he is anyone's ancestor then I'll be happy to supply what information I have about his activities in Great Horwood in return (in fact generally I can do this for anyone who has ancestors in Great Horwood before 1600). The subject of this particular posting, Henry Wattes, gentleman, appears in the Great Horwood records several times between 1529 and 1541. In 1529 he is described as of Winslow, and in 1535 of Whaddon. He appears once more in 1556, when he is of Hurst in Berks. He doesn't appear in the 1522 Muster Roll anywhere in Bucks, but is one of the richer taxpayers of Winslow in the 1524/5 Lay Subsidy Roll. However he doesn't appear in the 1535 Lay Subsidy roll for Winslow (nor in Whaddon or any of the other villages surrounding Great Horwood). A Gilbert Wattes was resident in Great Horwood from 1507 until 1522, and might possibly be his father, but Henry's rather higher social class makes this unlikely. Thanks very much, Matt Tompkins Centre for English Local History University of Leicester 5 Salisbury Road Leicester LE1 7QR

    2. Hello LIst, My Pearce line lived in West Wycombe for some time they were there until 1951 at 18 High street next to the George PH. Though they did come from Bledlow and Radnage area my Gt. Grandmother was a Stratford nee Stone. Recent information puts my Pearce family in 3 Crown Court in the 1891 period, I know there was an Edward Pearce living their during the war years I do believe he was married to an Olive White but have so far been unable to confirm this, also No. 18 High street was always known as the old post office , there is a brass plate above the door I am interested in finding out if in fact it ever was a Post Office, and when the Pearce family bought the place. Would appreciate some help here please if possible. Many thanks Pete.

    1. [Bucks] SMITH, PENN, COX in Buckland, Aston Clinton, Drayton Beauchamp, St Leonards, Etc.
    2. Alan Fincher
    3. Hello, I'm new to the list. I'm now starting to work on ancestors of my paternal grandmother, Elizabeth FINCHER born Elizabeth SMITH on 20 Jun 1879 in St Leonards, Aston Clinton, Bucks. I'm quite confused by all the parishes in this area, but these Smiths are from Buckland / Buckland Common, almost certainly as far back as the late 18th century. Although researching SMITH sounded a bit daunting, I think most of the SMITH families in this parish probably link back to common ancestors. I'm particularly interested in anybody who has looked at Henry SMITH & Frances HUMPHREY, (or HUMPHRIES), who married in Buckland on 12th Oct 1802. I think Frances was born around 1778, and guess that Henry SMITH would have been born about the same time. I'm also interested in the Penn and Cox families in this area, who married in to my Buckland SMITH line, and particularly James PENN born around 1800 in Missenden, or his sons, including Thomas PENN born about 1826 in Chalfont. Anyone link into any of these, please ? Alan Fincher (just across the "border" in Herts). Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
