    3. <<Although a primary use for many, I would also like to point out that the BGS 1861 CD is not just a tool for finding a specific person or family, <snip> The data can be searched on any census field and the results of the search can be plotted to county and country maps in a number of different ways e.g. by census place, by birth place etc. thus showing the distribution and concentrations of names, distribution across the county of occupations etc. The program also shows age and sex distribution of search results etc. The CD contains a gazetteer of the county, allows distance calculations, and shows hundreds and civil registration districts and so on.>> The BGS deserves many congratulations for that, Kevin - so many groups produce transcripts in a format which is useful for genealogical purposes only, and of little use for more general historical purposes. It's very pleasing to hear that you've produced a transcript of such an important record in a form which makes it useful to other researchers than just genealogists - and it will undoubtedly be very useful. Well done! Matt Tompkins Blaston, Leics

    3. I did wonder if you wanted help to kill someone :) but soon realised my mistake. If you look at FreeBMD - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ - and search for Arnott deaths in Buckinghamshire between 1841 & 1851 you find a William in the quarter ending June 1846 (Thame - mistranscribed /Thane )/ and an Ann Arnott in June quarter 1851. They could be yours. 2. Ann Crawley
    3. Does anyone have any connection to Robert Grimsdale a farmer from Widmer End, born around 1781? He was married to Rachel and I believe she was sister to Sarah Carter who married my ancestor Richard Oakins. I found Robert and Rachel on the 1841 census in Wycomb Heath with their son and daughter in law and their son George is shown on the 1851 census in Widmer End with his family. I'm hoping that finding out more about Rachel will identify where she and Sarah were born. Sarah died in 1846 and I have not been able to find Rachel on the 1851 census. 1841 indicates Rachel was born in Bucks. many thanks Ann

    1. A happy result on the 1861
    2. I am so happy because I have found an answer to a long standing brick wall on the 1861 1837 online site. We have never been able to discover the link with the 'WRAY' family in LONDON and the 'WRAY' family in DURHAM but on the 1861 Middlesex site have discovered MARTIN OSTERFIELD (ASTERFIELD) WRAY born DURHAM listed as a visitor at 33 Newman Street, Marylebone. Martin died before the 1881 census so I not had this link before. I hope this gives people hope that they may might discover some long lost ancestors. 2. Joan Hall
    3. Posting my interests. George HODGKINSON and it's various spellings born Amersham about 1814. I believe his parents could be Richard and Mary but I have no baptism record yet. I found two others baptised at the Lower Baptist meeting house Amersham Jesse being one and George named his son Jesse. George married an Elizabeth but I have not found a marriage. His first child was born was born in 1842 and he named him George. Thomas KEEN baptised 1795 at Hawridge married Mary HORWOOD in 1818 at Hawridge. Thomas was the son of Thomas and Mary nee BRIANT. I have a marriage for them as 2nd May 1788 but it is from the IGI and not from a parish record. I am looking for the baptism of Thomas about 1760 and a record of the marriage from a parish register. Mary HORWOOD could be the daughter of James BRIAN and Mary BACHELOR. That couple was married at Hawridge in 1757. I am looking for a baptism and the proper marriage date for Mary and parents. Absolam TURNER son of Joseph baptised 1799 at Speen married Grace FREE of Risborough in 1823. I have nothing for more for Grace. Joseph TURNER was married to Elizabeth probably at Speen but I have nothing more for them. They must have married before 1799. I was hoping to go the CRO and spend a few days in Buckinghamshire but ill health has put a stop to that. Is anyone else working on these names or could help me with the missing dates. Best wishes Joan In Devon

    3. Bucks is an abbreviation of Buckinghamshire. Buckingham is the town for which the county is named - but it's not the county town. That's Aylesbury. Only Jane HUBBOCKS in 1851 census of Bucks was in Temple Street, Brill. Aged 35, born Dedington OXF. Wife of Henry HUBBOCKS age 42 b Brill. Nephew John TIMS, 14, b Dedington, living with them. No John within 10 years of that age. They'd probably moved away by then. 20 HUBBOCKS in the county. 18 Brill, 1 Maids Moreton - and they were born in Brill. Also 11 HUBBUCKS in Oakley. It is obviously not a known parish so is more likely to be a small hamlet somewhere. Unfortunately she had died by 1881 (she had lived to the age of 89 so don't think she was worried) and I do not know where she was living in 1851, but as it was most likely to be in London, I am going to have to wait for Ancestry or someone else to complete an index otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. 3. Hi, I do think everyone is being a bit carping about Ancestry and the census on line. OK they might not be perfect, but they are a lot better than 40 or 50% correct. I have found loads of missing rellies with their index. When I think of how difficult it was to find some of the census returns, when I started doing family history, twelve years ago, well it'a a great help. Of course it is better to have a local CD, prepared by people who are experienced. But sometimes the wretched people aren't even in the County, where you expect to find them, and in those cases the index can be very useful. I found someone in Yorkshire not Bucks in 1891 which cleared up a long standing mystery. Let's be a bit less picky. By the way, I bet you all had a wonderful 'Feast' so sorry we missed it. Bad back, couldn't drive. Cheers Leila. 3. Pen, are you specifically talking the 1861 census here? In that year's census there is a widowed Ann TIBBY age 59 in Wendover (with son Henry age 18), indexed correctly in both the BGS CD and Ancestry. The CD tells me they are the only TIBBYs in Bucks (well, there's a Alfred TIBEY from Uxbridge MDX in Beaconsfield too). Two TIBBYs in Bucks in 1861 isn't a lot.....so you probably do need to shift your search to London, and for that I can only wish you luck as you'll no doubt need it!
