    3. Mary Jane, If you put Claydon House into Google (or other), it should sent you to the following: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-claydonhouse.htm If not, just type in the first bit and work your way there. When you 'arrive' a map link will help you with the location. If you type in 'Florence Nightingale' or 'Ralph Verney', you will learn even more.................. For those of you who are familiar with the area, would you kindly tell me where the House was in relation to the estate as the House is listed as being in Middle Claydon and the estate is in East Claydon? 2. Collectioner means a pauper who receive small hand outs from the money collected for poor relief from the somewhat better off folk. The Overseers of the poor allocated this money, according to the status and needs of the person. On the whole, a single person or widow/er would get about 1s6d to 2s, and a widow with small children would get a slight increase per child. This was added to if the recipient was sick, unless by provision of parish nursing (amateur) or medicine from the local doctor. You sometimes see wills where gifts are left to 'the poor of this parish not receiving collection'.

My grandmother was > adopted. Heather Webb > There was no offical adoption until the 1926 Act came into force. before that, a child was sometimes taken into another family unofficially, either because the natural parent/s were relatives, or because the child was fostered to them by some relative who paid or because an arrangement was made either by a Union of parishes, a church or a charitable society. There will not normally be any sort of record of this, since 90% of the 'adoptions' did not involve officials at all. Very occasionally, if the Union (workhouse) arranged the fostering of a baby, the fosterers took a liking and kept it. In this case, there could be the first placement note in Workhouse records - but you would need to know which workhouse, before you could pursue this. I would check very carefully to see if the 'adoptrers' are in any way related to the natural parents - childless sisters or aunties did sometimes take on their relative's child.
