True, there are Scottish Gunns, but my impression is they were lowland folk, unlikely to have been affected by the Highland clearances. If the 'Gunn woman' was from Roxburgh, that does tend to confirm the lowland origins. A lot of Scots migrated for economic reasons. As you are on the Bucks list, is there a connection with the (Rev) William Gunn, the Aylesbury Independent pastor?

    2. What I found out about the Gunns in my survey was that the family lived in the London area but returned to the highlands to have their children baptized. Then one daughter married a cousin from the highlands and vanishes, but appears to turn up in America, bringing the surname here. IT seems there is an entire clan here that are still holding onto their roots. So I researched the entire clan story. That was where I stopped, to pursue other lines that seemed more pressing. I had a hard time making the uncongruitous facts merge into a story line, so I suspected I was missing a chink of vital information, however.---Perhaps more research in Roxbury would turn up more evidence, but I am not aware of being closly related to any close Gunns in Aylesbury. -- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 25, 2007 4:28 AM Subject: [BKM] GUNN > > 1. 3. Hi Eileen Welcome to the list. FreeReg (http://freereg.rootsweb.com/search/index.htm ) has transcriptions of marriages from St Mary's Amersham for the period you are likely looking at (up to 1837), also baptisms from the Amersham Meeting House up until 1837 - non-conformity was very popular in this area. I also know that my own lot (not Pratts) skipped about between Amersham and Little Missenden, often more than once each generation, so don't forget to look in surrounding parishes as well as Amersham itself. Another easily accessible source for you will be the extracted batches in the IGI however it looks like there's less coverage there than at FreeReg (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyBuckingham.htm#PageTitle has the relevant batch numbers) Otherwise you could visit the record office, if you are close enough, to check out the parish records, or order the films through your local LDS family history centre - that's what I did. You forgot to tell us your g-g-grandfather's first name and the approximate date/year that his two children (that you do know about) were born. Looking quickly at FreeReg & the extracted batches in the IGI there was certainly a James Pratt and wife Elizabeth aka Peggy in Amersham in the 1820s-1830s, so possibly a relative (or even a first wife if your man was a James?). Good luck! From the record office in microfiche format of the originals or as transcripts from either www.bucksgs.org.uk/ or www.bucksfhs.org.uk/ I can't remember which one it is though. If you get the microfiche they usually cost around 2GBP per fiche and are sold in sets + post and packing. Some record offices also charge a handling fee. Check with the record office for their charges. *************************************** BGS Website: http://www.bucksgs.org.uk/ BFHS Website: http://www.bucksfhs.org.uk/ Bucks Genuki Website: http://met.open.ac.uk/genuki/big/eng/BKM/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
