Back Again.. Retraced my steps and I had made an error. Robert Buckey appears in 1900 census for Cumberland, MD. Head, White, Male, born July 1869, age 30, born Ohio, father born West Va., mother born Ohio, occupation: TAILOR Wife was named Bulah, born July, 1875, 24 years old, born Maryland, father born W. VA, mother born W. VA. Married 3 years, have two daughters, E. Louise, born June 1898, age 2 and Lillian born Apr. 1900, age 3 months. 2nd Precint, Sup. Div, 114, Enumeration Dist 121, sheet 19 B, 6th ward of city. Appears he owned his house (but still paying a mortgage) at 9 Springvalle Street. I guess that Robert and Wilson could be brothers, but both born in different states. There were Buckey's in Ohio, but never got the impression that they returned to Maryland. Maybe someone can help with the Ohio groups. Hope this helps with the search. Susan
Hi Tom, Hope the material was helpful. I wish I could give you more. At least you know your grandfather appears to have been born in Maryland and his parents as well. Since all the children were born in PA, appears he was there from at least 1884...birth date of the oldest son. I have not come across the names of Wilson and Edgar in the Buckey lines. I found your father and an uncle in the SSDI. Your father born 23 Aug 1892, died Nov. 1969, SS# 196-09-4678. Uncle Robert born 24 July 1889, died Nov of 1964m SS# 196-07-6067. But I could not find anything else related to the family. What was your Grandmother Kate's maiden name...it might help? My great grandmother was Margaret Ann Buckey, born 1835 to Jacob Buckey and Juliana Titlow. I cannot find Jabob's dad either. It is unfortunate that the 1890 census burned. I am thinking that they may have still been in Maryland in the 1880 census, and Wilson and Kate may not have married yet. I will continue to keep those names in mind as I search back and forth. Good hunting to you as well. Susan
To: Susan Gagnon Wilson, Thank you! Thank you! Wilson is my grandfather, and Howard was my father. I certainly appreciate your help. Are you related to Buckeys? I would like to hear from you. Thank you, Tom
Barbara, Thanks for the corrected info. I will make changes to my notes. Unfortunately, I am unsure of which Buckey line my Jacob comes from...(born about 1806 in Maryland.) I will continue to look.... Thanks again, Susan
Thank you for your reply. Your spelling is correct, BIRKETT. Regarding the death date for John, It should read d. Jan. 25, 1902 instead of 1922. Rebecca also died in 1902 on July 29. This information is from The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volune 69, page 19. I found this after posting message. I also have ancestors back to John Hart, who was a member of the 1st Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Indepence. If I can help you in any way please let me know. Barbara
Hi... I found three different Buckey families in the 1900 Maryland Census who lived in Cumberland City...a James Buckey, and a John E. Buckey, and a Robert Buckey. Didn't notice anyone a tailor, but could have been a son by 1950 or so. I did find the following on Wilson Buckey in PA in 1900. I hope it helps with some information. BUCKEY, WILSON HEAD WHITE MALE BORN DEC 1856 AGE 43 MARRIED 17 YEARS BUCKEY, KATE, WIFE, WHITE, FEMALE, BORN JUNE 1858 AGE 41 MARRIED 17 YEARS HAD 4 CHILDREN ALL LIVING BUCKEY, EDGAR, SON, WHITE, MALE BORN JULY 1883 AGE 16 SINGLE BUCKEY, ELSIE,DAUGHTER, WHITE, FEMALE, BORN SEP. 1885 AGE 14 SINGLE BUCKEY, ROBERT, SON, WHITE , MALE, BORN JULY 1889 AGE 10, SINGLE BUCKEY, HOWARD, SON WHITE, MALE, BORN 1892 AGE 7, SINGLE. WILSON WAS BORN IN MARYLAND, HIS FATHER WAS BORN IN MARYLAND, HIS MOTHER ALSO IN MARYLAND. KATE WAS BORN IN MARYLAND, HER FATHER AND MOTHER ALSO MARYLAND. ALL THE CHILDREN WERE BORN IN PENNSYLVANIA. WILSON IS LISTED AS AN ELECTRICIAN (MIGHT BE THE ONLY ONE IN THE CENSUS!) HE SPEAKS, READS AND WRITES ENGLISH. FREELY OWNS HIS OWN HOME. ADDRESS LISTED AS 560 GROVE AVENUE, DWELLING # 89, FAMILY # 9, 1900 PENNSYLVANIA CENSUS, CAMBRIA COUNTY, JOHNSTOWN CITY, ON THE 1ST DAY OF JUNE, 1900, ENUMERATED BY JOSEPH W. BUCHANNON. SUPERVISOR'S DISTRICT 13, ENUMERATION DISTRICT #144, SHEET 1 A., PART OF WARD 17 I will continue to see if there is anything else I can find. Happy Hunting, Susan
Hi....... Have the following. Rebecca Buckey, daughter of George Buckey and Elizabeth Hart, born Nov 5, 1827 died in Kansas on May 29, 1863. Married the Reverend John Birkett, born Nov. 23, 1818 and died Jan. 25, 1922 in Kansas (this is an age greater then 100, but it is the dates I have...I did not research personally) States that the family was still in Randolph co in the 1860 census. This was still the state of Virginia at the time. Lists: John Birkett age 42, born in England, Rebecca Birkett, age 32, born in VA. Edward Birkett, age 10, born in VA. Apparently an Emmet Birkett was born after the 1860 census. The family moved to Holton, Kansas The spelling of Birkett different then you listed...not sure which is accurate. Good luck, Susan
I am also search for a Rebecca Buckey, Nov. 5. 1827, Beverly, Va/WVa. m. John Burkett moved to Kansas. Would you have anything on this Rebecca?

Hi, Listers, I received the following from RootsWeb and wanted to pass it along: Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth. In the meantime, please take time to visit RootsWeb.com's sister sites -- Ancestry.com and FamilyHistory.com -- where you will find additional tools such as message boards, communities, and databases to help you in the search for your ancestors. Thank you for your patience. They estimate that they will probably be down around 24 hrs or so. My best to all, Peggy

Hello... Since this is a new group, I thought it might be nice to see which part of the family everyone is researching. If you are out there, why not post the names, dates, and places for your family names. There are not a lot of members here, so we should not be inundated with volumes (but I guess I can hope!). My line is Margaret Ann Buckey born in Frederick, MD in 1835 to Jacob Buckey and Julianna Titlow. Margaret married Augustus Ellis Rich in 1855 in Martinsburg, VA (now WVA). She died in 1875 and, according to his obituary, Augustus grieved for her the next 25 years of his life...he never remarried. She is buried in Fall River, MA in the Oak Grove cemetery. Margaret was the mother of 10 children. To the best of my knowledge, 5 died prior to 1900. The oldest daughter, Fanny died about age 35 and buried next to her are her two small children. Only one other child of Margaret and Augustus had children...so only two grandchildren out of the 10 children appear to have survived childhood (of course my grandmother made the most of getting past childhood by surviving to a few weeks short of her 99th birthday.) I know that Margaret's father, Jacob, died in 1850...from a 4 day illness. The census lists him as being born in Maryland in 1806. He married Julianna Titlow in 1832 in Middletown at the Zion Lutheran Church. I have been unable to connect him to other Buckey family members. Who else has family out there we might be able to help? Post your questions and we will all try and help! L8R, Susan
Peggy, Nice to come in contact with another Buckey researcher!!! Seems like there are not that many of us out there.. According to information that I have, the George Buckey that you mentioned was the son of Peter Buckey born 1770 in Frederick. The brothers and sisters were Anna Maria , Hannah , Eunice , William , John L., Marteney, Christeney Margaret, Edith, and David. John L. was born in 1805 and Marteney in 1807 so Jacob's birth date could be wedged in between...however, I have never seen a reference to that fact. (I have DOB of all the children if you need them.) My gg grandmother was Margaret Ann Buckey, born April of 1835 in Frederick, christened at the church in Middletown. Her father Jacob died in 1850 and was living in Frederick at the time. Margaret Ann married in 1855 in Martinsburg, VA., now in the state of WV. We know that George Buckey went to WV., so maybe they were related in some way to that family. I just do not know how. So I just continue to search. Thanks for your note. I hope that this site attracts more researchers so that we can fill in all the blanks of this family. Hi, Susan, Would you happen to know who Jacob's siblings are? I have a George Buckey who was born in Hagerstown, Frederick, Maryland in 1795 to Peter Buckey and Christina Marteney. George had at least 2 siblings that I know of: Hannah and Mary. Do any of them sound familiar to you? I am seeking information on Jacob Buckey, born about 1806 in Frederick , MD. He died in 1850, according to the 1850 census mortality index. In 1833 he married Julianna Titlow at the Zion Lutheran Church in Middleton. In addition, it appears he was a shoemaker. There are a lot of "Jacobs" in the Buckey family. However, none seem to be this Jacob. Any information on who his parents were would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Susan Gagnon Wilson at hrw3@worldnet.att.net
Hi Listers, For all of those whose ancestors may have embarked from Hamburg Germany to all points, there is now a great site that allows you to search for them. The address is: http://www.hamburg.de/LinkToYourRoots/english/welcome.htm They are putting a few years at a time on line so it will take a while, but, what a wonderful resource. Currently 1890-1893 is online, but, eventually 1850-1934 will come on line. Hoping all of you have a wonderful 4th of July! Peggy Listowner
