Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VYG.2ACIB/1580 Message Board Post: I have been up every branch of every river and still can not connect my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Solomon Buck b. 1808 NY to any known "white" line of Buck families. It is interesting that Jim Herring mentioned Argyle in one of his posts, since I did find a some info regarding a Solomon Buck in that area (Argyle) who married one Hellenor/Eleanor/Elinor Mount, d.o. James Mount of Argyle, NY.....James had three daughters: Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Mary. Two sisters sold their 1/3 farm lot inherited from their father James to Solomon Buck and then he and Eleanor sold the whole deal to Isaac Hanks in 1801. Apparently, this Solomon was in Cambridge, NY in the late 1700's and sold some land to Isaac Clapp. There is no evidence of Solomon or Eleanor as being in Washington County after the farm lot was sold to Hanks in 1801. I followed some other Buck families in that area around a bit...some move to Michigan and then Ohio. There is some interesting history in regard to Washington County (where Argyle and Cambridge are), especially Fort Edwards which was began by a man who had married a full blooded Native American woman. Fort Edwards was at the beginning of a place the Iroquois referred to as the "big carry", a portage place from Lake George to Lake Champlain. A lot of fur trading was done here and subsequently intermarrying between whites and Native peoples occurred. This really interested me, since I strongly suspect Native ancestry in my Buck line, but have not been able to follow this particular Solomon's (the one from Argyle, nor my gr-gr-gr grandfather's) trail. There certainly are a lot of Buck families in and around Lewis County, NY in the early 1800's. There is even a Solomon Buck who appears as a Captain in the 1805 militia for Lewis County. There is also a Solomon Buck listed in the Harrisburg(h) 1807 census. I found references also to the following Bucks in the History of Lewis County book by Hough: Chester in Lowville, Azro H., Daniel T., Amos, Elijah and Simpson (implicated in a murder of one Henry Waggoner). However, whether or not these Buck families are related to my Solomon, or to Jim Buck's line, or to Cynthia Buck Nielsen's line for that matter is still an absolute mystery as far as I'm concerned. I tried contacting the Lewis County Historical Society, but they aren't real happy doing genealogical research and sent me information I could already access through Heritage Quest. I got the name of the Historian for Harrisburg...Charlotte Wheeler...gave her a ring, but have not heard back. I have tried the St. Lawerence Cou! nty Historical Society and also the historian for Hammond, NY to get anything I could on Solomon to no avail. I believe my problems tracing this line stem from the fact that this line is Native or partly Native.
