I was interested in your Mahala Bisbee Buck and the Buck who went missing in Virginia during the Civil War, so I looked at the censuses.. I find a Mahala Buck, age 89, living in Maine in the census of 1900--- Buckfield, Oxford Co., Maine. She was born July 1810 and is widowed. She has born 3 children, 3 still living. She is living in the household of William Fogg(??) and wife Agnes. Her relationship to the household is a bit blotchy. I might guess "Gmother", except there looks to be a dotted i in the word and the last letter might possibly be something like a y or g. In 1880 I find Mahala Buck in the same town living alone, age 69. It indicates she is widowed or divorced; and was born in Maine, but her parents were born in Mass. She is living just a few dwellings from John Buck 63, son Harry 15, and sister Sylvania 80. In 1870 I find Mahala Buck living alone in Buckfield near Addison Buck & family and living also near John Buck. It looks like John's wife is Alba(?) M. Other children there, son Harry is there, and also sister Sylvania Buck. In 1860 Mahala 49 is living with Samuel Buck 69 in Buckfield. Celia B. Buck 15 is in the household. Also Dyantha Packard 27 and child Hellen 1. This dwelling is the next one down from the Ambrose Buck 37 household and the Caroline Buck 61 household. In 1850 Samuel 59 and Mahala 40 are living in Buckfield in the next dwelling from Elisha and Caroline Buck & children. Samuel & Mahala have daughters Cynthia 18, Diantha 17, Octavia 16, Celia 5. He is listed as farmer, as is Elisha. And..... four dwellings down lives William Bisbee 34, a powdermaker, wife Emilina 35, and son Francis M. 11. Maybe this helps with how Mahala fits into your family. I wonder if Samuel was the one who went to Virginia and couldn't get home during the Civil War, as I don't find him in the census of 1870 and thereafter. He would have been in his 70s during the War. Would love to know if he was there on business or if he had gone to visit some of my Bucks in Louisa Co.Virginia. Warmest Regards, Donna Researching Buck: Albemarle Co VA; Louisa Co VA; Culpeper Co VA; Montgomery Co TN.
