This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: BUCK, ARNOLD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VYG.2ACIB/1234 Message Board Post: The July 1968 (vol.44, No.3) issue of "The American Genealogist" contained, beginning on p.168, an article regarding Emanuel Buck's wife, Mary Arnold, as well as information on his other wives and his children. Unfortunately, there is an error/omission on p.171-2 of that article. It lists a son, Thomas, but the information given for him reads, "b. 1 Aug 1682; said to have m. Samuel 3 Arnold (Joseph 2, John 1); if so she d. East Haddam, 20 May 1739." There is no daughter, Abigail, listed, but the above quote happens to be the data for Abigail Buck. My question...does anyone have a copy of the addition or correction to this article or was there ever one published? If none was published, what other documentation (other than the IGI or Ancestral File) is there to support the information for Emanuel Buck's son, Thomas, and daughter, Abigail?
In Wethersfield Vital Records it shows: BUCK, Emanuell & 2nd wife Mary, m. 17 APR 1658 (Mary, b. 1 Jan 1659, d. 17 Jan 1712) children: David, b. 3 Apr 1667, d. 20 Sep 1738 Sarah, b. 1 Apr 1669 Hannah, b. 12 Apr 1671 Elizabeth, b. 4 Jun 1676 Thomas, b. 10 Jun 1678 Abigail, b. 1 Aug 1682 Note: Emanuel also married a Mary Orcutt and I don't know which Mary these records are referring to. I would love to have the information from the article you refer to if it is possible. Thanks. Janet, The article, "Emanuel Buck's Wife Mary Arnold", by Haskell Venard, was published in The American Genealogist, v.44, no.3 (July 1968), p.168-172. Most larger libraries should have this. I had to go to Tacoma, WA, to copy the article. Liz
Thank you so much. I'm going to the library tomorrow! It has been a long time since I have worked on this family. Carol pointed out in her quote from his book attached that Samuel BUCK of Crown Point only identified one wife Mary (Mary Kirby) whereas Emanuel/Enoch likely had wives Sarah Ryley, Mary Arnold (m. 17 Apr 1658) and Mary Kirby (m. bef 1667). As many of us are aware, while the Samuel Buck book has useful information, it has been found to contain quite a few errors. This is what I have in my note for Mary Arnold: Torrey lists last name of wife Mary as [Kirby] but the supplement to Torrey lists it as Arnold and also indicates Mary died before 1664; this is impossible if she is the mother of all the children listed. Harvey has Mary dying 12 Jan 1712. From further research it appears that Emanuel/Enoch married two Marys, first Mary Arnold in 1658 who died before 1664, and secondly Mary Kirby. From the records of Wethersfield, CT by S. G. Drake in 1861 is the entry Buck, Emmanuel married Mary Kirby, age 31, of Middletown, CT, April 15, 1658. However, the Wethersfield records apparently left the surname blank. Probate records of 1677 list Mary Kirby as wife of Emanuel Buck, age 32 years. That would make Mary Kirby born about 1645. This would likely make her the first child of John and Elizabeth who were about age 21 at that time.
