Hi Margaret, I do not have a Morgan BUCK in my database at all. I have no idea wo he is, except for all the conversation back and forth in the last several days. I know that we have never documented fully just who Jonathon BUCK's parents were, there are two possibilities as you listed in your letter to me. The confusion as to whether these people were from N.C. or Tn. stems from the fact that most of Tn. was part of NC. AS a matter of fact some of the most eastern counties on what is now Tn formed their own state called the state of Franklin, that was eventually mereged into the state of Tn when it ws formed. The county of Washington NC was the whole state of TN. We need to ask someone who lives close to Jonathon's grave site to go out there an read the headstone ans see if it shows a middle name, but in all the research I have done I have never seen one. While I am on the subject of the BUCK family, I would like to ask if anyone has run into the given name of Gurdon in the BUCK family. I fine some in NY and some in Louisiana and western Tennessee. but I haven't been able to connect the two branches the use the nameGurdon frequently. al vahlkamp
Hi Al--- You asked about the name Gurdon occurring in the Buck family. My Buck family Louisa Co VA >> Montgomery Co TN had no Gurdon. My database is quite extensive. (And we don't have a Gordon either.) Warmest Regards, Donna McCreary Rodriguez
Al and others interested, I have several Gurdon Bucks in my database. The earliest I have was born 30 Dec 1777 in Wethersfield, CT to Daniel Buck and Sarah Saltsonstall. Sarah's parents were Gurdon Saltonstall and Rebecca Winthrop. It appears the name goes back to Muriel Gurdon born 1613 who was married to Maj. Richard Saltonstall in London 4 Jul 1633. All but one Gurdon in my database was of this line and seem to have lived in New York City. I have one without a link and without dates with a son Gard Buck born 7 May 1797 in Preston, New London, CT. I think this Gurdon and his wife Martha Moodey may have been of the black race since a Martha born 1774, daughter of Pickle & Abigail Moodey was designated as Negroes. I just found one Gurdon BUCK in Louisana born 1886 with parents William P. & Sarah BUCK born in Tennessee. Since that is an unsual given name, one might guess that he is related somehow to the others. Searching various census years I find no clue as yet to his ancestry. Margaret Scheffler
