Hi Donna, When Tim was working hard to solve his ancestry a few years back, some of us on the list helped get the basic ancestry outline of Mahala Bisbee Buck's daughter Celia. I cannot remember the details now, but if you look at my mscheffler database, you will find some information on this line. I should cut and paste some of your information into the notes because I primarily just did the ancestral line and was not as specific about what I found in the census. Did anything I wrote provoke that interest..or did you find out about it on your own? The Buck who "went missing" was Charles C. Buck. my gr gr grandfather..He was born in 1831........to a Henry E. Buck and the former Mahala Bisbee. He went to work as a surveyor in Lynchburg, Va in the 1850's and was caught up and never left because of the Civil War.......... He married a half-Indian/colored former slave woman and had a number of chidren in Va. The oldest being my gr grandmother.... C.C. Buck opened up a confectionery/candy store in L'Burg and ran it with members of his family for a number of years until he sold it in around 1906 or so. He was quite the prominent businessman for a number of years.. He also led an Elks chapter too... OK......talk to you soon. By the way, where do you live now? I live on Long Island in NY State.

I think your Charles Buck is really interesting. I wanted to follow up on him this time because earlier I had read on one of the boards about a northern Buck who went to Virginia and couldn't get back during the War. That earlier posting may have been yours. I live in McKinney, Texas, just north of Dallas. My Bucks came to Texas in the 1880s from Montgomery Co TN---and before that they were in Virginia---Louisa, Albemarle & Culpeper Cos. And many of this Buck line remained in Virginia and Tennessee. I found your Charles Buck as a confectioner in the 1870 census in Lynchburg. So interesting. It says the value of his personal estate is $6000. Lots of money for the time, and especially right after the War in Virginia when there had been so many business setbacks. He must have been a remarkable businessman. You've got good genes! I wonder if this Civil War record on Ancestry is your Charles C. Buck???? His age is right and he was discharged at Lynchburg. Name: Charles C Buck Occupation: Laborer Enlistment Date: 17 May 1861 Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE Side Served: Confederacy State Served: Virginia Unit Numbers: 795 795 Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 17 May 1861 at the age of 31 Enlisted in Company A, 37th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 17 May 1861. I was interested in your Mahala Bisbee Buck and the Buck who went missing in Virginia during the Civil War, so I looked at the censuses.. I find a Mahala Buck, age 89, living in Maine in the census of 1900--- Buckfield, Oxford Co., Maine. She was born July 1810 and is widowed. She has born 3 children, 3 still living. She is living in the household of William Fogg(??) and wife Agnes. Her relationship to the household is a bit blotchy. I might guess "Gmother", except there looks to be a dotted i in the word and the last letter might possibly be something like a y or g. In 1880 I find Mahala Buck in the same town living alone, age 69. It indicates she is widowed or divorced; and was born in Maine, but her parents were born in Mass. She is living just a few dwellings from John Buck 63, son Harry 15, and sister Sylvania 80. In 1870 I find Mahala Buck living alone in Buckfield near Addison Buck & family and living also near John Buck. It looks like John's wife is Alba(?) M. Other children there, son Harry is there, and also sister Sylvania Buck. In 1860 Mahala 49 is living with Samuel Buck 69 in Buckfield. Celia B. Buck 15 is in the household. Also Dyantha Packard 27 and child Hellen 1. This dwelling is the next one down from the Ambrose Buck 37 household and the Caroline Buck 61 household. In 1850 Samuel 59 and Mahala 40 are living in Buckfield in the next dwelling from Elisha and Caroline Buck & children. Samuel & Mahala have daughters Cynthia 18, Diantha 17, Octavia 16, Celia 5. He is listed as farmer, as is Elisha. And..... four dwellings down lives William Bisbee 34, a powdermaker, wife Emilina 35, and son Francis M. 11. Maybe this helps with how Mahala fits into your family. I wonder if Samuel was the one who went to Virginia and couldn't get home during the Civil War, as I don't find him in the census of 1870 and thereafter. He would have been in his 70s during the War. Would love to know if he was there on business or if he had gone to visit some of my Bucks in Louisa Co.Virginia. Warmest Regards, Donna Researching Buck: Albemarle Co VA; Louisa Co VA; Culpeper Co VA; Montgomery Co TN.

Hello---- I come from the John Henry Buck Virginia line. He came to Norfolk VA about 1770. It is speculated that he came with an older brother, since John Henry was 9-11 years old. He worked his passage on the ship and then was apprenticed and probably indentured to (most likely) a millwright. So my question::::: Do any of you Pennsylvania or Maine Bucks have 1700s Virginia ancestors or collateral ancestors? Thanks so much---- Donna Researching Bucks of Louisa Co VA, Albemarle Co VA, Culpeper Co VA, and Montgomery Co TN.

My wife's mother used to rent out rooms in an old schoolhouse she owned in Augusta, ME, and two of the boarders were Francis K. Buck, now deceased and his older sister, Alice M. Buck. They were born in 1917 and 1912, or thereabouts, to Frank C. Buck and Ada T. Buck, with siblings Fisher and William, all born in Maine. 1920, the family was living in Portsmouth, NH. One living relative remains, a son of Francis Buck and Alfreda (Chadwick) Buck. It appears this family came from New Brunswick, Canada. Is anyone researching these Bucks?

Anything posted on this forum goes to the email list. When posting give the who, where, when, why, location, etc. The single comments without any information are not only annoying to the readers, but they don't produce any help for the person seeking help. Give generational information if you know it. If you can get back two or three generations, you might just find someone who has researched your ancestors. The time frame and location are really important because some of the names have been commonly used in these families for generations. A well written query might just result in the help one is seeking.
