Although severely wounded by a heavy splinter, Buck continued to perform his duty until positively ordered below. Later stealing back to his post, he steered the ship for 8 hours despite his critical condition. His bravery was typical of the type which resulted in the taking of the Forts Jackson and St. Philip and in the capture of New Orleans.

I finally heard from Bob Buck, the famed aviator who was licensed at age 15, and broke air speed records crossing the country at 16. He now lives in Vermont, as do his two children. His Buck family came to Vermont in 1794 from England. Two brothers, one moved to Texas, the other stayed in Vermont. Not much else about his own parents, but I'm hoping that the description of this branch of the Buck family will match up with someone else on this mailing list. His grandmother, Elizabeth Bellingrath, was born in Switzerland, was originally a Ruban. His grandfather was Ewal Bellingrath, from Alsace. There's a Nietzel family in there somewhere (hence the middle name), but he asked that we not go into that part of his life. From what I've gathered through census records, it appears he may have been born a Nietzel, in Elizabeth, NJ, and later became a Buck when his mother remarried. My cousin, Everson Pearsall, also a pilot, played golf with Bob many times in NJ, and told me that Bob's Buck father was a doctor. He recalled they moved to Buck's County, PA, and later back to VT. That's all I know, and may be all we find out. As Bob Buck put it, "My interests are what's ahead, not behind". Gary Allen Richardson

A little more information regarding Robert Nietzel Buck, born 1914 in Elizabeth, NJ. He was born a Nietzel (hence the middle name) and his mother, Emily Bellingrath, married a Dr. Buck (not sure of first name) sometime before 1930. There were not a lot of Buck families in Westfield at that time, so it shouldn't be too hard to find them. After Robert began his early flying career, the family moved to Bucks County, PA and later to Vermont, where Bob and his son, also a pilot, live today. Bob flew for TWA, was friends with Howard Hughes, and also with Tyrone Powers, among others. He flew B-17's into hurricanes for weather research. He was also friendly with Everson Pearsall, now of Scotch Plains, another pilot, and cousin to Bob's wife, Jean Pearsall. Most of this came from Everson, who is now 86, in a conversation today. Hoping this info might trigger some more about the Buck family. Gary Allen Richardson

I think the best thing for you to do is to start by looking at the trees on rootsweb that I worked on with Margaret Scheffler. If you go to the rootsweb homepage and type in Madison Buck you will get a page that has a list of places where that name shows up, including World Connect. Click on world connect and look for Elizabeth Madison Buck (that is my grandmother) and that will bring you into the tree with all my Buck ancestors as far as I can go. There is also some info regarding Madison Hun Buck (my gr-gr-grandfather) that can be found using the same method and looking for Richard Hascall's tree. Also, you can click on my name in rootsweb forum messages and see everything I've posted (you can do this on genforum too...I've posted on the Buck forum there too). Also check this out..http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? op=GET&db=stlawrencevalley&id=I01643 Copy and paste it into your address bar. This is the tree that contains a Henry Buck t! hat may or may not be related to my Solomon. Funny thing about this line is that there are people in this line that feel there is Native blood involved here too. Let me know if you need any help. is your Henry Buck from NY?

They had twelve children born in Smith County KS Mike and I have shared the information on our Great Great Great Grandfather so he has pretty much said most of it but I will try to expand a little in case it might help. I have Hiram’s obituary that says he died at home on the 160 acres that he had homesteaded in Crystal Plains, Smith County KS. He is buried at the Crystal Plains Cemetery, Smith county Kansas. On his headstone it says that he served in CO A 21 Reg Mich Vol. He homesteaded in 1873 according to the article in the Smith County Journal vol VIII No 18 Thursday, December. He came with his second wife Adelia Abigal Potter, Rachel Ann, Alice Marie and James Oliver from Michgan. I am not sure if his children by Harriet Ann were with him or not. From the information that I have received from others I do not believe that is the case. However, in his will he did list Morgan F. Buck as inheriting some of his property (Cannot find any records indicating that Morgan F. Buck was in KS) that was only if his! wife was not alive at the time of his death and she was. Adelia Abigal Buck and James Oliver Buck along with His wife Rachel McClain and their family of twelve children on August 4 1908 left their home in Smith County KS to homestead in Colorado. They homesteaded in Kiowa County CO. Kiowa County compiled by Roleta D. Teal and Betty Lee Jacobs Article Pioneer Family page 371 by Ruby B Wissel. As I've been trying to help others solve some of their BUCK problems, I ran across a "new" BUCK. Perhaps someone can provide a clue to his ancestry. Rev. William W. Buck was born about 1804 in New York and married Jane E. Hurd probably soon after 1840. In 1860 they are found in Oregon City, Clackamas Co., Oregon. Jane born about 1823 was said to be from Vermont. Because of the age difference, I wonder if Jane could be a 2nd wife and their son Heman a son by a first wife. Other children besides Heman b. about 1840 was Marian b. abt 1847 and C. S. Buck born abt 1854. He is called W.W. Buck in the 1860 census. Margaret Scheffler
