This was the only thing I found so far. RICHARD H. POILLON. Richard H. POILLON, who was Fire Commissioner in 1884 and 1885, was born in New York City on the 5th of November, 1846. He is the eldest son of the late Richard POILLON, a member of the firm of C. & R. POILLON, shipbuilders, of New York and Brooklyn. He was educated in the public schools and at the Polytechnic Institute, from which he graduated in 1864. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1867 and graduated from there with high honors in 1871. After leaving West Point he started on a tour around the world, and was a member of the tourist party, who under the direction of United States Minister DE LONG. first penetrated into the interior of Japan. Returning from this tour, which occupied about nine months, Mr. POILLON entered the United States regular army as a commissioned officer, and served about three years on the frontier, principally in California and Arizona. In 1874 he resigned from the army and returned to Brooklyn, where he engaged in the lumber business on the Gowanus Canal. Subsequently, he retired from the lumber business to accept the position of chief Deputy Collector in the Internal Revenue office, under Colonel Rodney C. WARD, then Collector of the First District, New York. Mr. POILLON resigned this position in 1882 to accept that of Deputy Fire Commissioner, which was tendered him by Commissioner John N. PARTRIDGE, to succeed whom, in 1884, Duputy POILLON was appointed Fire Commissioner. Having had the experience of two years' service as deputy, Commissioner POILLON assumed office with an accurate knowledge of its duties and requirements. Although greatly hampered by the passage of the Underground Telegraph bill, June 14, 1884, Commissioner POILLON, believing that the efficiency of the Department was greatly dependent upon the strength of its telegraphic service, bent all his energies toward making the latter as effective as possible during his term of office, and succeeded in affording protection to certain sections of 'the city which had been previously neglected. Commissioner POILLON was present in person, and in direct communication with Chief NEVINS at all the principal fires which occurred during his term as Commissioner. It was during his administration that the fire-boat, Seth Low, was built, and several necessary companies were organized. Commissioner POILLON favored the organization of an insurance patrol for the protection of the dry goods district; and also, owing to the increase of high buildings, strongly recommended the organization of a life-saving corps. When he was succeeded by Commissioner ENNIS, Mr. POILLON devoted himself to the fire insurance business in this city and New York. In 1879 he was appointed Engineer officer with the rank of major on the staff of Brigadier General E. L. MOLINEUX, a position which he held while Generals BROWNELL and Ward commanded the Fourth Brigade. Transcribed for the Brooklyn Pages by Mimi Stevens BROOKLYN FIRE DEPT. Carol has hit the nail right on the head about the use of the name TAYLOR in the BUCK line. That is why so many of them are named TAYLOR, there are some descendants living today with the name TAYLOR as a given name. al vahlkamp in Tx.
I agree with Cynthia in wondering about the origin of Taylor as a middle name for Jonathan Buck, the spouse of Zuriah Covalt. J & Z's son Ephraim married Nancy Agnes Taylor and E & N's son was named Jonathan although I do not know what his middle name was (if any). Jonathan's son was Nathaniel T. (presumably Taylor) Buck and Nathaniel's son was my grandfather, Alfred Taylor Buck who I know was named for his cousin Alf Taylor. (The Taylor family was a prominent one in east Tennessee with three being congressmen, two being governors and one being a U.S. senator which could explain the popularity of using the Taylor name in that branch of the family.) Martin, I have some info on this family. I believe Barzillai's father was Benjamin Buck of VT. Barzillai and family lived at Buck's Corners in Norfolk Co., ONT at the same time my family Edmund Buck lived a short distance away in Oxford Co. Both had sons named Robert, Joseph and daughters named Mary...I do realize these are very common names, but other crossings seem to crop up in research. Edmund is said to have been born in VT as was Barzillai. His name may have been Joseph Edmund Buck...makes it difficult to search. You may contact me off this list if you want to "chat" further on this line. Marian Buck Sargent

Hope this works. Really wanted on the Buck List, but it ended up on the Buck Board a day or two ago. Just not tech savvy I guess. Hi All, Am looking for Henry Mortimer Buck b between 1810-1820 unknown where. Could be Vermont or New York or any parts in between. Supposedly married a Canadian Indian named Kyeak (could be spelled differently) Bradford. Where the Bradford comes in is beyond me. This couple settled in Covington, Pa according to family lore. When or where they died I have no idea as I cannot find them in the cemeteries or the census. These folks are really good at hiding. Also, thru family lore, this branch of the Buck's belong to the Buck's in Chemung, New York. How! I haven't the foggiest. Since there are a lot of Buck's are out there, would you please check your branches and twigs to see if you have either of the two in your trees. Also, their children, also another guess, born between 1840 - 1846 in PA. They are Eliza who married a George. Don't know if that is his first or last name. Jane who married a Cleveland. Marietta who also married a Cleveland. Then we have William born abt 1841 who married Sarah Cleveland. This one I do know about as he is my gggrandfather. And last we have Henry Mortimer Buck (who would be a Junior if he was born in this century) b 1846. He too I know about. According to family lore "Big" Henry left is wife for another woman and had at least 2 more children. Son named John and a daughter named Belle. Supposedly Belle married a man named Mosher. Believe Belle and Mr. Mosher were living in Elmira, NY. That would be abt 1890 give or take 5 yrs. The parents and grandparents of the above children are the ones in question. Also, any info on the girls will be greatfully appreciated. Please remember these people liked to use their middle names, which adds to more confusion than anyone really needs. I thank any and all who can help me in this matter. Please e-mail me direct with Buck family in subject line. Thank you.
