If so, we are related. I've been having trouble making sure that William's mother was indeed Elizabeth Waters, instead of Elizabeth Barnes. Both names seem to be coming up equally in my online research for some reason. Have you got definitive proof? I've got Waters listed in my records right now, and I'd like to ease my mind that it is indeed the right Elizabeth. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Tim, I think if you check you will find that Suffolk County had a connection to CT rather than MA. Early Long Islanders used to go to Hartford, CT. It had to do with the Treaty of Hartford in 1650. Bobbi On 2/11/07, TJmsn119@aol.com <TJmsn119@aol.com> wrote: > > Interesting point..... Maine was a territory of Massachusetts until 1820 when the Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. New Hampshire separated for the Massachusetts Bay Colony in January 1680 and became the Royal Colony of New Hampshire. France first claimed Vermont as part of New France in 1666.The area between New Hampshire and New York (Vermont), was claimed by both colonies. On January 15, 1777 it became the Republic of New Connecticut but on July 8th of the same year, the name was changed to Vermont after the French term for Green Mountains (Les Vertes Monts). The Republic lasted until it became the 14th state in 1791. Yes, the boundaries did bounce around, but were settled when the U.S. Census began to list place of birth. The confusion probably lies with the person themselves, as boundaries weren't strictly adhered to in those times. Many a person born in Canada would merely cross the border into the U.S. and take up residence - when questioned by the census taker, they would say they were born in the U.S. - with no real way of proving they weren't, they were taken at their word. Another caveat to consider - many census takers misspelled names and such, so the error may lie in the document itself. I have found this to be true on several occasions over the years. Mac

Bobbi's point about State boundaries changing is a good. Also consider the fact that the person providing the census information on any particular day, may not know in what state every person in their household was born. I would not throw out my belief in a relationship link because of discrepancies in place of birth if there is substantial information that it may be wrong. Obviously discrepancies should cause us to dig deeper because the census could be correct. But many times it is not. I have had situations where a lot of the family information fit, but not enough to prove one way or another, and then later found two first cousins with the same name and approximate birth date. In one of these I had myself descended from the wrong cousin. The descendant info was fine as well as the common grandparents line back. BUT I had a lot of errors having the wrong parents and spent much time tracing other related family lines of the wrong cousin. Not to mention that people who took what I put online continue to perpetuate some of the errors, even thought I tracked a few down and sent corrections. Hopefully someone else will have some information to add to what has already been posted. Hi, I am not really sure as to boundary lines or dates, but I would check to see if anything that was once Vermont had ever become New Hampshire. At one time part of New York State became the state of Vermont. On the Eastern side of Vermont the borders might have changed also. The parents were born circa 1775 and may have been immigrants. You're going to have to go into the Canadian Census to find a lead on the parents.Since the nationality and faith are given, I think a bit of digging may come up with the other data, but it isn't in the IGI or Ancestral files. It says they lived in Brock,Ontario when the census data was taken. You may be able to get the film for the various census years from the FHL to check them. There were many people name Ira Buck in New England and Northern New York, along with the Ira Buck you are researching, so the task will not be an easy one.
