I had the # of children wrong too, but I thought I was wrong. I often wondered where her husband was. It could be a movie. The reason I was even reading the article with interest was my ggggrandfather, Barzillai Benjamin Buck was born about 1776 & applied for a grant from the Crown when he was about 21 & rec'd 200 acres in Ontario. I don't know the conditions of receiving the grant or anything about his parents or wife. I would like to get a copy of the grant application. The sleuthing is a challenge. Thanks again as that story has haunted me. (^^) Twila

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VYG.2ACIB/22.120.2.2 Message Board Post: "Mrs. Buck" from your story of the trek is my 4th great grandmother and husband Philip Buck. He was UEL, born in Germany, to Philadelphia, to Mohawk Valley, captured, held in New York, released and joined his wife and 6 of the 13 children in Montreal. His wife Margaret, had traveled from Mohawk Valley (Near Albany) with other women at the time of the American Revoluntionary War, to protect their families. The Indian's were not guides, if they had been caught, they (Indians) would have been shot. The Indians came and left food and told them the direction to go. Then the Commander of the British Forces sent soldiers and Indian guides after they had traveled more than half way. They made their way in November to Montreal, meet Philip, her husband, there and was given land in Niagara Falls area. It is a truly wonderful story of fortitude for 5 women and 31 children. I would glad to exchange any and all info I have.......... Beth The following is from the UEL magazine. "The names of these families are well known in history. The party consisted of Mrs. Philip Buck, Mrs. Nelles, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Secord (later mother-in-law of Laura Secord), and Mrs. Bowman, along with their 31 children and only one pair of shoes among them. It was winter-time and they were completely destitute. At one place they would have perished, but for the kindness of some Indians. After weeks on the road, the commander of the British forces heard of their unhappy plight and sent soldiers and Indian guides to take charge of them. After they reached Canada, Mrs. Buck gave birth to her seventh child. The government of Canada assumed responsibility for the refugees until, by an exchange of prisoners, some of the soldiers were once more united with their families."

There probably are German Bucks also if their name has been shortened from something like Buckholtz, etc. It helps to know at least a little family history.

Surnames: Buck, Smith, Poore, Fenner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/VYG.2ACIB/1179.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Jolinda, I'm so happy you wrote. By my calculation we're 4th cousins, since Asa Smith and Hannah Poore were my g g grandparents, as well. My information on Loren and Louisa Smith Buck comes from the Fenner Family Tree, census data, a few tattered, old family documents, including Louisa's obit. and part of a Poore genealogy from another "cousin" met on the web. I spent a week searching the net for their Smith, Poore and Buck families origins trying to get a feel for migration patterns, birth places, etc. and found a vast amount of information on the Mormon site (familysearch.com) - trees, marriage and death records and so on. But I haven't even started to verify any of it. On Edmond Smith I have only that he was born 12 December, 1825 in Manchester, Ontario Co., NY, that he died in 1920 and was married to an Alice E. Harmon who was born abt. 1829. I have Joel Smith b. 16 December 1827 in Manchester, m. Mary Jane McCurdy, b. abt. 1831. I do have much more information! on Loren and Louisa Smith Buck and descendants. My database, last updated in August, is at Rootsweb/WorldConnect, Specific Database 92840. I'll be anxious to hear if we have the same info. and am delighted to find someone with "Joel" information. I do not have the Christlieb genealogy. I "have" a Julia Susan Smith who married Alonzo Christlieb but do not have a Ruth. Would love to know how to obtain a copy. Please e-mail me directly. Barbara Cook, [email protected]

My Great grandfather was Joel Smith of Alaiedon Township (accross the road from Delhi Township) near Lansing, Michigan. The farm that he homesteade back in 1848 is now part of Michigan State University research. I was surprised to see family history on the internet for Louisa Smith Buck since I was unaware that any of Joel's brothers and sisters came to the Lansing area at the same time that he did. Since finding Louisa, I have also discovered Edmund, but not of his descendents. Please let me know if you know anything about Edmund Smith of Lasing. I have a family genealogy that was done by a Ruth Christlieb of Los Angeles, CA. Do you have the same genealogy done in 1956???

    2. Kent A. Elam, Jr.
    3. I am seeking information on Hiram Buck, a Methodist minister. Hiram and Martha Buck are found in the 1850 census living in Vermillion County, Illinois. They list their birthplace as New York. By 1880, they are in Macon County Illinois. They were large landowners in township 16 of Douglas County. One of their bequests was a large piece of land to Illinois Wesleyan University in Normal, Illinois. Wesleyan stills owns this land. I would like to know what churches he ministered in this area in addition to anything else you may be able to share. My purpose for this inquiry is because I am writing an article for our upcoming centennial and I am concentrating on the original pioneers/landowners of this area. This is all I have on this individual. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of this line. Thanks for your attention to this message. Kent Elam
