    2. Landt,James H.
    3. I posted a query on the BUCK message board back in November 2002 regarding the parents of Frank BUCK (1868 - 1952) of North Wales, Montgomery County, PA. I have found part of the answer. >From Frank's death certificate and US Census information, I have determined Frank's father to be Mathias BUCK, born 1829 or 1830, in Württemburg, Germany. He came to the USA around 1860 and was a carpenter. He married a Sarah D******* (maiden name unreadable), born 1845 in Pennsylvania. In 1870 and 1880, they lived in Gwynedd Township, Montg. Co., PA. Their children were: Amelia, born 1862 George, Born 1864 Charles, born 1866 My Frank, born 1868 Elmer Mathias, born 1870 Clara, born 1875 Gertrude, born 1878 In 1900, Mathias was a widower, living with his daughter, Clara, in North Wales borough, PA. Clara had married a Fredrick HAMM, born 1869 in Germany. In 1910, Mathias was living with his son, Charles, also in North Wales borough. Does this information connect with anyone? 2. I have some info on a Charles Buck, married twice, one of his wives was Ann Sorrel Earle in Va.. I have in my ancestry an Ann Buck, listed in her marriage record in Randolph Co. (W)V. in 1799 to Barnabus McCall , was her mother, Tabitha Buck . I have thought it possible that my line of Bucks connect to this Charles. Do you have a Tabitha Buck in any of your research? Jackie

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VYG.2ACIB/1240 Message Board Post: EVENING POST ANNUAL, 1882 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES [With Portraits] of the State Officers, Representatives in Congress, Governor’s Staff, and Senators and Members of the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut. Published Annually. Hartford, Conn.: Evening Post Association. 1882. Pg. 35, 36 HON. JOHN R. BUCK, Congressman, First District: Hon. John R. Buck, republican representative in Congress from the First District, was born at Glastonbury, Connecticut, December 6, 1836, and was educated at Wilbraham academy and Wesleyan university. After completing his academical education he studied law, was admitted to the Bar in 1862, and has since practiced his profession at Hartford. He was for several years the law partner of the Hon. Julius L. Strong. He was assistant clerk of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1864, clerk in 1865, and clerk of the Senate in 1866. He was president of the Common Council of the city of Hartford in 1868; was City Attorney in 1871 and again in 1873, and was Treasurer of the county of Hartford from 1863 to 1881. In 1880 and 1881 he was a member of the Connecticut Senate. In November, 1880, he was elected to the Forty-seventh Congress from the First Congressional District to succeed General Hawley, who had been elected United States Senator, receiving 17,048 votes against 15, 114 votes given for his Democratic competitor. Mr. Buck is one of the leading lawyers at the Hartford Bar, and has been employed as counsel in many important cases, involving the powers, duties, and liabilities of municipal, railroad, and other corporations. He was one of the early promoters of the Bar association of the State. Mr. Buck has always been an active and prominent republican, and has ever taken a zealous interest in the affairs of his State. It may especially be said of him that he has ably and faithfully filled all the positions of honor and trust to which he has been appointed. Mr. Buck will make a useful Member of Congress by reason especially of his long and active experience in legislative matters. He is a most persistent and patient worker, and invariably wins men and their support to measures more by quiet persuasion than by oratory. Yet he is a good public speaker — always terse and to the point. So far as attention to the needs of his constituency is concerned, he may be depended upon to be watchful, and the business interests which he may be called upon to assist will be sure to have a most effective supporter. Though a new member of the House, he has been assigned to important committees, including that on the revision of the laws, which is a place sought by leading lawyers in that body.

    3. To Fred and others, When posting about families, it always helps to provide ALL the relevant information you think that might help someone to connect to your families. Giving names of children and their birth dates for example, might help, in connecting to previous generations since family names were often repeated generation by generation. Posting locations of where the family was known to emigrate from to where they settled and stops along the way can help someone define a possible relationship if their family or one they know of took the same trek at the same point in time. I personally tend to print out information on various BUCK families and keep them in a folder. Occasionally I run across helpful information months after the original posting. Sometimes I take the time to type unrelated families with common surnames (at least at that time) from my major family surnames into my database which means I am more likely to be able to provide information should someone else write asking about the same family later on. With this material I include the submitter's name and the email address so that I can forward on what I know to the next person who may write on the same family. As it turns out from Mary's information posted after the one I am replying to, this John BUCK family lived in VA and West Virginia, and I personally have done no research in that area, but one never knows when other people's family names and locations will connect, perhaps with someone researching the archives a year or two from now. As an example I found a 10 year old query in a genealogy publication a few years back, and you guessed it, I happened to have the information in an 1800s family diary that answered the query that had gone unanswered all those years.. In summary, when one writes a query, try to be as specific as possible. This is an area where being vague likely means you will make no connection. Even with specifics you may not make a connection now, but you might two or three years from now when someone searches the list archives. 3. John Buck is a brick wall. John married Elizabeth Ervin on April 10, 1834 but no other information is given in the entry. Elizabeth was born January 17, 1814, in either Pendleton or Campbell Co., Kentuck, the illegitimate daughter of Sarah (Sally) Thrasher and father unknown. Ervin is her step-father's surname. I have Sarah Thrasher's ancestry back to an Unknown Ankrom in Virginia about 1645. John and Elizabeth's children were: Elisa J. (1835, Meigs Co., OH-1866, Appanoose Co, IA); Sylvester (Jan.27, 1837, Meigs, OH-abt. 1880, Appanoose, IA); Charles (Nov 10, 1836, Meigs, OH-Sept 18, 1863, Memphis, TN); Sarah Ann (Jul 14, 1841, OH-?? KS); Amanda (Feb 16, 1842, Vinton Co., OH-June 15, 1916, Putnam Co., MO); Elizabeth (Feb 5, 1844, Vinton, OH-?? KS); Eli (Sept 29, 1846, Vinton, OH-Nov 6,1927, Appanoose. IA); Elias (Oct 27, 1848, Vinton, OH-Sept 22, 1869, Appanoose, IA); Edward (May 15, 1851, Vinton, OH-Dec 3, 1915, Appanoose, IA); Martha (Aug 28, 1853, Vinton, OH-????)and Jasper Joseph (Oct 20, 1859, Appanoose, IA-Nov 22, 1945, Carbon, WY). I have spouses and in some cases, children of all but Martha who seems to "disappear". 3. It might help to list the children's names and dates if you know them and the parents of Elizabeth Ervin and where she lived if you know these facts. Since there are many New England records, if you can push back a generation or two, someone may have the line from there on back. If some locations are known, it would give a start as to where to start searching for Erwins and Bucks. Did you try any alternate spelling of Erwin such as Irwin?
