His record of achievement as a retailing executive has continued unbroken to the present time, and he now heads an organization which operates over sixty stores in the states of Kansas and Colorado, as president of The A.L. Duckwall Stores Company. His offices are at Abilene. A native of Niangua, Missouri, Mr. Buck was born on February 26, 1905, son of Alonzo L. and Pearl (Strickland) Buck, both of whom are now deceased. His father was a farmer and a carpenter. Frank Harry Buck attended the public schools and graduated from high school, and beyond that point his education has come through practical experience. He started his career in variety store retailing at fifteen, working part-time while attending high school in Springfield, Missouri. At the age of eighteen, he was managing his first variety store at Higginsville, Missouri. IN 1925 he became associated with F.S. Reed Company, a regional variety chain with headquarters in Wichita, Kansas. In the years which followed, he managed stores for this company at Stillwater, Oklahoma, and El Dorado, Kansas. In January 1929, with exceptional experience behind him for a young man of twenty-five, he became associated with The A.L. Duckwall Stores Company, a regional variety chain then consisting of twenty-six stores, with headquarters at Abilene. He served as general superintendent of stores, and was elected to the board of directors of The A.L. Duckwall Stores Company in 1937. IN January 1950, he was elected president of the company, and that position he now occupies. Since he joined the chain-store corporation, it has more than doubled in size, and in large measure this steady and encouraging growth is the result of Mr. Buck's efforts, and his experience and exceptional talents in the retailing field. There are now sixty-five Duckwall stores in the two states where the chain operates. Long a leader in the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Buck served on it board of directors in 1952, 1953, and 1954. He was regional vice president in 1953. He is affiliated with the Free and Accepted Masons and is a member of the higher bodies of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. Holding the Thirty-second degree, he is a member of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and the Royal Order of Jesters. He and his family attend Trinity Lutheran Church. In Kansas City, Missouri on October 14, 1933, Frank H. Buck married Norma Roughton, daughter of William C. and Mabel (Evans) Roughton. The couple are the parents of one son, Frank Dennis buck, who was born on Febuary 9, 1939."
Could you do a lookup on Gilman BUCK, they moved around alot so unsure where he was born. Thank you, Sil
Some of you have been asking about a book by Mrs. Elizabeth Richards who wrote about a family that lived early in ME and in Bucksport, Maine. The full citation is: Richards, Mrs. Elizabeth S., Genealogy of the Buck Family which settled in Cambridge, afterwards Woburn, Mass. in the year 1635 (Reading, PA, Eagle Book and Job Press, 1913). I have taken time the past few Saturday afternoons to copy the pages from a copy in our local library with my digital camera and finally have almost all the pages copied in readable format, excepting four pages that I need to redo this Saturday when I go to the library. I printed out the index and the first 60 or so pages, so can do a few lookups. I have also typed the names from approximately the first 8 generations into my database. Since, there are a lot of common names, please include more than a single family name if you know it since my time for lookups is limited and making your person of interest easier to find would be appreciated. It appears that some later generations of these families ended up in the South -- several I was looking at on Saturday were from South Carolina or Virginia. I noticed families also went to Texas, Minnesota and Tacoma, Washington. There is no place index, however, so I cannot do lookups according to location. Margaret Scheffler

Hello list, I have an inquiry regarding Buck ancestors who came over from England in the 1800's. My great great grandmother Liza Buck was born in England , as was her Husband Tom Freeman(Frieman?).both settled in NJ in the Perth Amboy area. I have no further information about either Ancestor, but I do have a photo of their daughter Ann Maria Frieman born in perth amboy nj 1854. She is portrayed with a dark complexion and dark almond shaped eyes. We wonder if it is possible her father or mother were of Indian descent. As the RAJ was in its heyday at this time, this is a remote possibility. Also the family"legend" is Native american descent, but those of us doing research have found no evidence of any NA relations among our ancestors. Thus we now wonder if the "indian" was actually "Indian". Any thoughts on this matter would be welcome. Thank you any way. My grandfather (Wilmer s/o of Gilman) was born in Ohio but the families moved around a LOT. Sylvia
No I don't. Just very distant ones from Maine and Lynchburg Va. is all. I think.....but I found someone online who is descended from my gr grandmother's long lost brother... Charles C. Buck? Were we ever both shocked? He was actually divorced from his wife since 1910 and unheard of ever since..... Is that a family story there or what?
Tim; Do you have any Gilman BUCK's in your line? Sylvia
Hello there, I'm mainly interested in any Buck relations in and around the middle of Virginia. Do you know any? Tim
