    2. Joyce, so far the MTDNA has done thing except put me in contact with others who share the halogroup (mine is H which is from Europe) and mutations that I do. So far, 174 share the same low resolution, while only 29 share the high resolution (good explanation at www.familytreedna.com). However, I have not found a common ancestor from these groups, so the origin probably goes back a long, long way (expansion times for Europe range between 35,000 and 50,000 years). MTDNA is passed between females only (i.e. I have my mother's, which she received from her mother, which she received from her mother....and on and on...) Male children of a woman also have her MTDNA, but do not pass it on. So, having a surname is of little use in tracing an ancestor. More like finding a needle in a haystack.
