Hello, I'm searching for Bryants, possibly of Cherokee descent and who possibly had connections in east Texas, but also lived in Alabama or Georgia for a time. Possibly connected to the family of Chief Bowles of the Texas Cherokees. My gg grandmother is Fannie (Fanny) Bryant, who was mostly Cherokee, who married a William Crawley, who may have also been Cherokee, or from some other tribe, or possibly of Dutch/Indonesian background (the real mystery man in our family, as it is said that he his real last name was not actually Crawley). They had 13 children, including 3 sets of twins. Fannie was born in either Alabama or Georgia and then later moved with her husband William Crawley to east Texas around Tyler, Texas. I am descended from their daughter Laura, who married Charles Thomas Miller in Texas. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone out there? I seem to have hit a brick wall on this one. My grandmother said that she believed that there was a connection between Fannie Bryant Crawly and a man known as "Doc" Bryan in the Tyler, Texas area in the early 1900s. It is possible that Fannie Bryan's Cherokee blood was not from the Bryan side of the family, but from her mother, who we believe may have been a daughter of John Bowles, son of Chief Bowls (Diwali), both of whom died in Texas in 1839. We have believed that her Cherokee blood was on both of her parents' lines, but we don't know for sure... I would love to hear from anyone who might have any information about this family. Thanks, Peggy Smith
Could this be who you are looking for? There is a John E & Mary Bryan in 1880 Hot House Twp, Cherokee Co, NC with a 7 year old son, Joseph M. They are on the same census page (284 B & C) as Charles F & Mary Stiles and their daughters, Florence & Augusta. I have Campbell Co, GA Bryants in my line and their names get spelled a multitude of ways, Bryan, Briant, etc. Linda Auburn, CA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Faded Genes" <faded_genes@charter.net> To: <BRYANT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 09, 2004 1:15 PM Subject: Joseph Marion BRYANT 1873-1955 NC >I am looking for information that will lead me to the parents of Joseph >Marion BRYANT. The website address I sent previously for the site with the census index was incorrect. Here's the correct one: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourbryants/
The Bryant census index for Virginia & Kentucky from 1790 thru 1850 is now online and available for everyone to use. It's at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ourbryants/index.htm
For the reference of those who might be researching Gabriel Bryant who is on the 1820 census in Floyd Co., KY: I recently located the will of Gabriel Bryant (Briant) of Parke Co., IN and it names his children. They were Liddy (Lydia), Lucinda, Nancy Ann, Gabriel, David and James. It appears there may have been another son as well but he is not mentioned in the will. He probably died before the will was made. >From the information we've found so far, this Gabriel Bryant is the same Gabriel who was in Floyd Co. KY. Census records of his children indicate the ones born around 1820 were born in Kentucky. Gabriel's wife's name was Phoebe. We believe she was Phoebe Marsh, daughter of David Marsh. We're currently trying to verify this. Marsha Buck
I'm looking for descendants of James Carl Bryant who is listed on the 1830 census in Osceola, Polk Co., Nebraska. There are no children listed on that census. We're hoping to find a living descendant to talk to. James Carl was born about 1900 in Gentry Co., Missouri. His father was William M. Bryant, b. abt 1871 in Indiana. We believe William is a descendant of Gabriel Bryant, of Parke Co., Indiana - and that Gabriel is the son of Josiah Bryant and Lydia Ratliff of Montgomery Co., VA and Montgomery Co., KY Gabriel's wife's name was Phoebe. We believe her maiden name was Marsh but haven't been able to verify it yet. William had three brothers - John H. Bryant, b. 1849 in Clinton Co., IN, James H. Bryant, b. abt 1859 in IN, and Josiah b. abt 1861 in IN. James Carl had a brother - Harold M., b. abt 1895 in Nebraska. Thanks for any help. Marsha Buck DeepRoots@sisna.com
In an inquiry about the parents and any other ancestors of William Pink Bryant, I failed to say that the information available to me was from the Navarre County census in Texas. It listed him as having been born in Alabama and his father, thorugh not identified, as having been born in North Carolina. It said Wiliam Pink Bryant had been born in 1860. -- danhamrick@gmail.com Dan Hamrick
We have a William Pink Bryant, born in Alabama about 1860 and died in Texas who listed his unnamed father as having breen born in North Carolina. Does anyone know who the father is and when and where he might have been born? I suspect a connection between the Bryants of North Carolina and my Boones, as in Daniel, but that is unimportant here. Hi I've been following with interest recently some e-mails about Bryants from North Carolina. I'm trying to find out more about my g-g-g-grandfather, William Bryant, who reportedly was born in Ireland in 1760. He married (Sarah Johnson?) and had several children in North Carolina (Rockingham Co) before moving to Patrick County, VA where he died in 1848. My g-g-grandfather was John Bryant, Sr. born in 1809 in Rockingham, NC. and later also died in Patrick County, VA. Does anyone have any information about William, his wife, etc. I would especially like to know where in Ireland he came from and any information about his ancestors. Thanks. Sandy
Hi Michelle, My Bryant's are in Blount Co., Tenn. during the early part of the 1800's. Actually, they continue on there as well. Most of my Bryant family came NC and before that, Virginia. Can you give us dates and places for the James and David you are referring to? .................................................................. Yes, that probably would help <g>. David Washington Bryant was born March 15, 1825 in Macon, GA - died August 20, 1898 in Leon, TX. James Bryan Bryant (the one that is showing up in all of the databases as DW Bryant's father) was supposedly born in 1744 - which makes him quite old when DW Bryant was born; however, there is another James Bryan, born 1773 in Marion SC - died 1858, location unknown (by me). His father seems to be Jesse Bryan, born 1750 Georgetown District, Craven SC. According to the various trees on Rootsweb and Ancestry.com, the line just keeps going back with ease, but I need to stop at DW Bryant until some reference is found of his parentage. So far, I cannot find David Washington Bryant listed as a son of anyone, yet, I'm fairly certain he was <g>. I'm looking for information on David Bryant of Floyd Co., KY. I find him there on the 1840, 1850 & 1860 census. He was born about 1804 and was married to Vina (Lavina) Mullins, the daughter of William Mullins. They were married 28 March 1830 in Pike Co., KY. I'm trying to figure out several things. First, I think David may be the son of the Gabriel Bryant who is on the 1820 census in Floyd Co. We think Gabriel went to Indiana after this census. We find a Gabriel Bryant in Parke Co., Indiana in 1830 that matches. However, there is one son on the 1820 census that does not appear on the 1830. He would have been born between 1804 and 1810. I'm trying to determine if Gabriel's son stayed in Kentucky and, if he did, if he is David. I'm also trying to determine the relationship between the Bryants and the Mullins. In 1818 Josiah Bryant (the probable father of Gabriel) signed a marriage consent in Floyd Co. for his daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth married George Holland and they lived in Pike and Breathitt counties. In 1850 George and Elizabeth have an Ambrose Mullins living with them. Some researchers have taken Ambrose to be the father of Elizabeth and have recorded her name as Elizabeth Mullins. According to other census records Ambrose Mullins did not have a daughter the right age to be Elizabeth. Plus we know that Elizabeth's name was Bryant, not Mullins. So I'm not sure why Ambrose was living with them. To make this even more confusing, William Mullins, the father of Vina, is the son of an Ambrose Mullins. Don't know if it's the same Ambrose or not. But there is definitely some kind of connection between the two families. If David Bryant is the son of Gabriel, then Elizabeth Bryant Holland was his aunt. Any help with any of this would be greatly appreciated. Marsha Buck DeepRoots@sisna.com www.pageproducer.com/users/deeproots/index.html

I just finished compiling a census index for all the Bryants of different spellings for Kentucky & Virginia from 1790-1850. I will be posting it somewhere on the internet soon but if any of you would like to have specific information from it just let me know and I'll send it to you. I did it in Excel so I can do a variety of sorts. The main file is alphabetical by given name for each state. My second file is alphabetical given name for each county within each state. You can contact me at DeepRoots@sisna.com with requests. Marsha Buck
