3. Hi Everyone! I'm sorry that I haven't answered this sooner. Rootsweb does have a very effective block (from everything I've seen) for spam mail. Such mail is bounced to we listowners and I have gotten several spam messages that were prevented from reaching my lists in recent days. It's all been the garden variety "Make Money" type posts. Rootsweb can't prevent someone from subbing to any list and picking up names and addresses tho. I'm sorry GKinard has gotten such mail. Hitting the delete button is about all we can do, I'm afraid. The kind of person who sends such mail can just change their own address and keep sending. Personally, I've always hated to block a whole domain (such as AOL or Yahoo) because the person who knows "The" answer to my toughest genealogy question might be there. Again, I'm sorry any of you have had such trouble! Does your e-mail program have a way to block the sender? If not, you might consider setting up a second e-mail box through Hotmail or Yahoo or something and subscribing to the Bryant list through that other mailbox. The spammers will still have your other e-mail address, but if they are getting you name through Rootsweb having a second mailbox might lose them. Also, the best thing to do with spam is to delete it without opening it if you can, because some spam messages are generated by viruses (i.e. Melissa, etc.) Kali Myatt [email protected] wrote: > > I have been inundated lately with vile, disgusting unsolicited email. 1. [BRYANT] Is anyone else having genealogy list problems w/porn?
2. I have been inundated lately with vile, disgusting unsolicited email. I had thought rootsweb has some sort of block on this but, in the last one I received (today), I recognized several of the names of folks I've seen who are fellow members of the Bryant list. These names, along w/mine, were in the "to" line. It seems obvious to me (and maybe I'm wrong) that the spammers have someone gotten into our Bryant mail list and using the names and addresses to send out their filthy email. Has anyone else had this problem? How can we stop it? I know that you cannot click on "remove" to get your name off the list, as they will use that as affirmation of your address and not only continue to send you this garbage, but will sell your name to other spammers. Each time I get one of these emails I report it to "[email protected]" (whatever isp it came from) as well as to [email protected]. But I have not had much positive response from the ISPs and no response at all from the ftc. Any ideas? If belonging to my favorite genealogy lists is going to cause me this much harassment I'm ready to quit. I seem to get 3 or 4 of these each day and each time the "to" list has several names from various gen. lists, not just Bryant.
