    3. I am not familiar with this company or it's products. If anyone on this list is going to order this CD please let the list know and give us a review once you get it. I would be interested in the CD but maybe we shouldn't all rush to buy it until someone checks it out? 1. [BRUN] Abraham Brown (LeBrun or Brun) Quebec to Worcester Cty Mass early 1800's
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Brown LeBrun Papillon Hennessy Healy Coughlin Brun Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hRG.2ACIB/54 Message Board Post: My gggrandfather, Abraham BROWN (Angelecized from Brun or Lebrun) m. Elizabeth FLAGG-dit-PAPILLON, 1844, Holden, MA. Marriage certificate lists "Adolphus BROWN" as the goom's father. (Adolphus BROWN posib Brun or LeBrun). We (my cousins and I)believe that there may be other BROWN-LEBUNS who migrated from the area of Richelieu County, Quebec to Massachusetts and on into Connecticut (Putnam County during the first half of the 19th Century). I suspect that Abraham may have had a brother names Francis or Francois. It is possible that Adolphus Brun may have been from Yamaska, Richelieu Cty, Quebec and that his ancestors may trace to the Brun family who were in Port Royal prior to the "Expulsion." Abraham BROWN, wife and kids subsequently moved to western Worcester County, MA. Apparently the FLAGG-dit-PAPILLON family also did. I have recently contributed a DNA sample to the Brown Family DNA Research project http://www.questgenealogy.com/dna-brown-results.htm It will be interesting to see if any other Fr-Can Brown-Brun-LeBruns have a DNA match. If you have any info that may link to this, we would like to hear. Merci... Dick Brown

    1. [BRUN] Surnames Allied with "Brown"
    2. I am trying to compile a list of surnames that may have been changed to "Brown" either by (1) translation, (2) shortening, or (3) a combination of translation and shortening. This exercise is part of efforts by members of the Brown DNA Research Project to find families with "allied" surnames, whose DNA might show a common ancestry with one or more "Brown" families -- especially Brown families now living in the USA, Canada, and Australia. Any suggestions, especially about additions or deletions, would be appreciated. Jim Brown DNAforBrowns@aol.com ********************************************************************** TENTATIVE SURNAME LIST: Braun, Braunbeck, Braune, Brauneis, Brauneller, Brauner, Braunhardt. Brauns, Braunschweiger, Braunstein, Braunton, Braunwalder, Broun, Brownback, Brownbill, Brownbridge, Browne, Brownell, Browneller, Brownen, Browner, Brownfield, Brownhill, Browning, Brownjohn, Brownlee, Brownless, Brownlow, Brownmiller, Brownsburger, Brownscombe, Brownson, Brownsword, Brownyard, Bruen, Bruene, Bruenette, Brun, Brunet, Brunette, Brunetti, Le Brun (French), Marrone (Italian), Moreno (Spanish), Pardo (Spanish).

    1. [BRUN] Brown DNA Project Seeks Allied Surnames
    2. The goal of the Brown-Surname DNA Project is to trace the histories of -- and to look for connections among -- various Brown families, INCLUDING families with allied surnames. The Project's primary vehicle is laboratory analysis of Y-chromosome DNA -- known for short as "yDNA." Our effort is a non-profit volunteer activity, manned by amateur genealogists. Testing is contracted to a private company, and actual lab work is done at the University of Arizona. The term "allied surnames" refers to families with names like Browne, Braun, Broun, Brun, Browning, Brownlee and the like. The reason for this inclusion is that some of today's "Brown" families descend from ancestors whose surnames originally were spelled in these and related ways. For example, surnames like "Braun" (German) and "Brun" (French) sometimes were translated into the English "Brown" when immigrants from Europe settled North America. Or "Browning" and "Brownlee" may have been shortened to "Brown" for convenience. Finally, as many genealogists have found in their own research, surname spellings often were not standardized until the 20th century -- so that variations like "Browne," "Broun," and "Brown" sometimes were used interchangeably for a single family. Y-chromosome DNA is uniquely suited for surname studies, because it is passed almost unchanged for hundreds of years from fathers to their sons. Therefore, yDNA "tracks" surnames very closely. This situation dictates that participants in the Brown-Surname Project must be males, who descend in an unbroken male-to-male line from an ancestor surnamed Brown, Browne, Braun, Browning, Brownlee, Brun, or something similar. (Females are not tested for DNA surname studies, since they do not carry the Y-chromosome, nor do they have a comparable gene that may used to track surnames. So the exclusion of women from direct participation is simply a result of biology, not discrimination. On the other hand, a number of women genealogists are very active in DNA surname studies -- including the Brown Project -- by way of recruiting male relatives for testing.) I hasten to add that I became especially enthusiastic about this Project when a recent lab test of my own DNA provided a major breakthrough for research on my Brown ancestry. This test has connected my family to another Brown line that previously seemed unrelated, helping me eliminate a "brick wall" that frustrated my genealogical quest for years. As our study's data base grows, I anticipate more breakthroughs not only for myself but also for other Brown and allied-surname researchers. So perhaps you will understand my enthusiasm! Actual testing for the project is done with simple kits mailed to participants. The test is done quickly, with only a few gentle swabs inside the mouth. It is not the least bit painful or awkward -- and less uncomfortable than brushing the teeth. Results will be available about six weeks after the kit is returned to the lab. If you or somebody you know is interested in becoming a participant in the Brown-Surname Project, please contact me by direct Email at DNAforBrowns@aol.com. I will give you specifics on testing procedures and fees. In the meantime, if you would like general information on the role of DNA in genealogy, you may visit the following web site: http://www.familytreedna.com/faq.html Detailed information on the Brown-Surname Project may be found at: http://www.questgenealogy.com/dna-brown.htm And if you are not interested in participating in the Brown study at this time but still would like to follow our progress, you are invited to join our project's mailing list. There is no cost or other obligation for this service, and I will be glad to add your Email address to the list. Finally, if you have any type of suggestion, question, or comment about the Brown-Surname DNA Study, please feel free to contact me. Best regards, Jim Brown DNAforBrowns@aol.com PS: We would also appreciate suggestions as to additional surnames that may have been shortened, translated, or otherwise changed to "Brown" or similar variations.
