There are records avalible for this surname/location if anyone would like to view them or if anyone has any documents to submits for others. The more people who donate what they have, the better the odds are of finding a record you need for FREE. The Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study began in early 2002. It is a group of amateur genealogists interested in using the new discipline of DNA genealogy to find connections between and among various Brown-surnamed families around the world -- including families with spelling variations like Broune, Browne, Brun and Braun, as well as possibly-related surnames like Browning. Our research uses a simple and painless mouth-swab routine to sample DNA from the Y chromosome (so-called yDNA). This material is the only type of DNA that "tracks" the surname reliably, and it's handed down from father to son with little or no change over hundreds -- sometimes thousands -- of years. (Because women don't carry this type of DNA, it's impossible for them to be direct test participants in our research. Nor are they tested for any of other the 1000+ "DNA surname studies" now in existence. But the majority of our participants have been recruited by female relatives -- so that women are indeed quite active in this work.) Our project now has yDNA signatures for 143 men, of whom 70 -- or about 49% -- have so far found "genealogically significant" matches with other project members. This success rate has been rising steadily over the life of the project, and we expect continued increases over the next few years as more and more people learn about the new field of DNA genealogy. To be specific, our rate of matches was only about 30% at this time last year. And two years ago, it was about 10%. In most cases, our participants' DNA matches have occurred "out of the blue," thereby bringing together Brown researchers who previously had no idea of their relationships to one another. In several instances, moreover, the matches have already provided true genealogical breakthroughs for the families concerned. Our project is manned by unpaid volunteers with absolutely no financial interests in the work, although testing arrangements are contracted via a commercial firm. Most of the study's participants have been tested by the University of Arizona's world class DNA lab. But our membership is open to any participants who've been tested elsewhere. For additional information on our project, you're invited to visit our website at: http://brownsociety.org/ And if you have specific questions -- either about DNA genealogy in general or about our project in particular -- please feel free to contact me anytime off-list. Best regards, Jim Brown (James Armistead Brown, Jr.) Project Co-Administrator Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study DNAforBrowns@aol.com

Another searcher is looking for this information here at Rootsweb/Ancestry. Belonie Mazzerolle is the son of a David Mazzerolle and a Caroline Brun. He is looking for the parents of David and of Caroline. I found numerous names for each in Maine in the US census. If you need help looking them up I'd be happy to do so for you; if you want to search Canada's archives for your ancestors, go to: www.lac-bac.ca and also check www.ellisisland.org as many people came into the US from Canada for work, often returning to their home country or to Canada after a period of about 5 years each time.

Angelo Brun is the name of one of my great great grandfather's brothers; they had a cousin with that name as well. Giovanni Brun was my great great grandfather; his brothers were Giacomo, Angelo, Lutagardo, Natale and Giuseppe. There were two sisters, also but no one has recorded their names as far as I know. Their mother and father were Antonio Angelo Brun and Cristina Trinco or Trincus Brun. The family lived in Andreis. They have another relative named Guido Brun, whose name is on a marker in the town square of Andreis, honoring WWI dead. Giovanni Brun married Domenica Bucco; their children were Luigi, Silvio and Maria Cristina Brun. His brother Giuseppe Brun married Lucia DeAngelis, was widowed and later married a Carrie Myer or Meyer. Giovanni became known as John Brunn in the US after he settled in PA and Gisueppe was later called Reverend Joseph Brunn after he settled in New York City. Natale Brun died in Italy and is buried there. He was in the Italian military (Army/Calvary?); Lutgardo was also in the Italian Military but I do no know for sure if it was the Navy or what branch. Giacomo stayed in Italy also; I do not know what he did there. The Brun family had a stone and wood cutting business in Italy before WWII; I believe it became defunct after WWI. The Brun family donated the land for the town school, which was later destroyed in an earthquake, then later the town hall was built on that same site. The children there in Andreis began being bused to another town which was larger, so no school was rebuilt in its place.

Surnames: Brun > Brunn from Friuli Region, Italy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hRG.2ACIB/67.27.43.46.1.2 Message Board Post: I have since found that Domenica Bucco, from Frisanco (Friuli region, but nearer Udine) married Giovanni Brun of Andreis, Italy and was the mother of my great grandfather, Luigi Brun, who became known as Louis Brunn here in America. Giovanni and Domenica are the parents of Luigi along with his brother Silvio and their sister Maria Cristina Brun. Domenica Bucco had a sister or cousin named Caterina Bucco, who was married to a Pietro Brun, of Philadelphia, PA. Pietro and Giovanni are related to an Angelo Brun; I believe Giovanni and Angelo are brothers and Pietro is their cousin. Pietro and Caterina Brun and their family lived in Chestnut Hill, PA on Benezot (?) Street in the early 1900s, while Giovanni and his family eventually emigrated from NYC to Ridgway, PA. Luigi Brun (Louis Brunn) later emigrated from Ridgway to Hazleton, PA. Giovanni's brother, The Rev. Joseph Brunn (Giuseppe Brun) converted and became an Italian Presbyterian; he married in NYC and became a minister in Little Italy; his son Paul Brunn became an attorney in NYC. I just received the biography of Rev. Joseph Brunn in the mail today from my second cousin, Jim Brunn, who lives in Niagara Falls, NY. Jim is the son of John Brunn and Viola Woodring; John Brunn is the son of Luigi Brun, who is the son of Giovanni Brun. Anyway, Jim thinks we are related to an Angelo Brun, brother of Giovanni, who may have emigrated from NY to Canada after passing thru either NYC or Philadelphia. I'll get back to you once I read the bio/he lets me know what the connection is and we'll see if it matches up!

As far as we know, no one in our family immigrated to the U.S. and everyone is catholic. Also, my grandfather angelo brun came to Canada in 1957. His twin brother came some years later because he was in the military in Italy. Immigration into Canada in general started much later than it did in the U .S. I will have to ask my grandfather some questions to see if there is any relation, but to my knowledge and even to my mother, there does not seem to be any relation.

Why, I do not know for sure, but there are rumors. I have some papers for Louis (Luigi) Brunn from 1917, showing he registered for the draft as Louis Brunn and it states in his own handwriting that Andreis, Italy was his birthplace and that he was a shoemaker at that time. I know that in a 1937 Hazleton, PA City Directory, he was a coal miner, so I am not sure how that occupation change occured or when. Our Brunn family was Presbyterian here in the US and I am assuming they were Presbyterian in Italy also; many Northern Italians were. In fact, a cousin or uncle of Louis's, Rev. Joseph Brunn, was the Reverend at The Broome Street Tabernacle in Little Italy, NYC, for many years, and this was not a Catholic Church, but a Protestant one. He was born in Italy as was Louis, though we believe both married in the US, Italy. As for Louis's father, I think his name was Giovanni. Louis's only son's name was John, and we were told he was named after Louis's father, who stayed in Italy when the brothers came over to America. I was told that Louis came over alone, later, and that prior to that, two other brothers came over--Giovanni and either Antonio or Angelo. My grandmother, Edith Brunn Eisenman, was a natural redhead and her father, Louis Brunn apparently was, too; I was told many of our Brun/n family members were, too. As for the name being changed to Braun,it's possible that some family members took this name, which means Brown in German (as Brun means Brown in Italian). I was told a family rumor that our branch changed their name to Brunn with 2 n's because it was "more German sounding" and at the time Louis emmigrated from Italy to the US (1880s), Italians were looked down upon but Germans were seen as "industrious and clean". That may be true, maybe not. Maybe it was just a mistake when someone signed their name, one time. Who knows! I don't know if any of this fits for you and your family, but please let me know if it does ot does not, for my records.
