I have recently connected my HILEMAN line to the BRUMBAUGH family of Huntingdon County, PA. Esther Brumbaugh, b. c1823, is the daughter of John & Mary Brumbaugh. The books say that Esther disappeared while on the way to a neighbor's house and was never seen again. Another account states that Esther disappeared with David Hilleman or Hileman. Esther did marry David Hileman c1843 and raised a family in Burnside township, Clearfield County, Pa. before moving west to Washington State c1890. I would like to exchange information with anyone who has or wishes any information on this family. Thanks, Hal Hileman

January 12th 1889, being the 94th Anniversary of her Natural Live. Died. At the residence of Henry Warner, One mile south of Bradford Ohio, on the 11 day of April 1889, Susanna Hoover, aged 94 years and 3 months, being the oldest lady in the community. Susannah Brumbaugh, was the daughter of John and Christena Brumbaugh; was born on the 12th day of January 1795, in Blair County, PA. Her parents, as all parents in these days, were not too well provided with this worlds goods and as a matter of course her early life was spent at home in an effort of making a living. Her education was very meager, but the religious training that she received from the good old mother away back in the early part of the 19th century has continued with her through all the trials and sufferings that she met during life. She was a member of the German Baptist church for over 70 years and always led and upright and Christian life, one that others could look up to with pride, and follow with safety, one that lead not along the highway of wickedness, but the straight forward course to virtue, peace and happiness, her life and indulgences were such that the organs of her body reached the goal of here existence together, and painless as a candle burns down in its socket, her life went out, to cross into the unknown into that beyond, where she has met those who knew her almost a century ago. She was the oldest of nine children, and of course a great deal depended upon her while at home. Two of these are still living, Conrad Brumbaugh and Elizabeth Hull.. in 1812 she was married to Christopher Seas, by whom she had three sons and one daughter. In 1818 hearing of the opening up of Ohio to settlement they loaded their family into a wagon and started west, and settled in Miami Co, Ohio, He began to open up a farm among the Indians and wolves, who at that time were very friendly. They were industrious and soon had a comfortable home constructed of hewed logs, chinked and daubed, in good style, but this happiness in the wilds of Miami county, was not to continue for long, for the summer of 1821 her husband was taken sick, and died leaving her alone to struggle for herself and family. She proved herself equal to the task, keeping the family together, for a year or so, when Andrew Warner, a respected citizen, sought her companionship, and they were married in 1822, by who she raised one daughter. This was a happy union, but alas from human events, was soon to be cut short. He died in 1824, leaving her the second time a widow, to brood over her trials and sorrows alone. This time she remained a widow until Jacob Warner, another respected neighbor turned his attention to her interests and they were married in 1827. To this union four more children was born. This union brought together four sets of children, who were living with her at the same time, and to all these she proved to be a step mother in every sense of the word, getting along with them pleasantly and in such a way that all respected her; the many kindnesses shown them by her. Sixteen children, composed of five sets filled up this household, and all went on in the little family circle with out a jar. In 1835, Mr Warner died, leaving her a widow the third time with her large family well provided for, surrounded with lovely, and obedient children, The time passed until in 1841, Isaac Hoover a worthy and respected neighbor, who lost his companion sought a home with her, and they were married soon after bringing together thirteen children born of two different mothers. Again she starts out full of happiness surrounded with the little colony, always endeavoring to please those around her. But this happiness was destined to be broken up, and deaths messenger claimed her husband as his own in 1848 leaving her a widow for the fourth time. She kept house with the children until 1850 when they were about all married off and left her alone, she went to live with her daughter Mrs. Henry Warner, where she has resided for about thirty-nine years. Many little traits of character might be related to show her loving disposition, but it is sufficient to say herein that she died, as she lived, leaving not an enemy behind. She worked on the farm and helped her husbands in a great many ways to get along in the world. She could weave as fine a piece of linen as any of her neighbors, and took a great delight in spinning thread from flax, and her wheel was her daily companion for many hears. Of nine brothers and sisters five of them are dead. Catherine Hoover died 23 May 1839; Jacob Brumbaugh died 27 Jan 1843; John Brumbaugh died 2 Mar 1879; Daniel Brumbaugh died 27 1873; David Brumbaugh died 23 July 1883; Henry Brumbaugh died 17 Oct, 1885. She is represented by nine children of her own, and twenty step children. Sixty grand children, one hundred and thirty great grand children and thirty four great great grand children, making the representatives of her body two hundred and thirty-three, thirty of who are dead, leaving two hundred and three still living. Funeral services from the home of Henry Warner, preached by, Tobias Crider at the church one mile north of Bradford, Apr 14, 1889. Interment at the new cemetery. The above was penned by Nate Iddings, a local history buff of the time. ===================== http://www.tdn-net.com/genealogy/stories/biograph/biog-ae/9000.htm Susannah Brumbaugh ~ 1795 - 1889 ~ A Short Biography of the life and charactor Susannah Brumbaugh-Seas -Warner-Warner-Hoover, January 12th 1889 being the 94th Anniversary of her Natural Life. Hi Folks, While surfing I found that the Brumbaugh List was in need of an administrator. Decided that I'd try it. One change is that I have blocked messages from the ancestry.com message boards. If you'd like me to rethink this notion, please let me know. I've put up a list of a number of Brumbaugh links at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~thebob/brumbaugh.htm Sincerely, Bob Manning

I enjoy buying lovely old pictures like these in antique shops and locating descendants/family members so that I can re-unite the pictures, for only my costs, with people who will treasure them. The photo was taken by the S. W. Tate Studio in Pontiac, IL – which is in Livingston Co. It is my assumption that the photo was taken in just about 1900, and Mrs. Brumbaugh looks to be about 35-40 and Bess looks to be about 16. Mrs. Bumbaugh has a soft smile, but Bess does not look happy to be having her picture taken. Each woman is wearing a dark high-necked dress. The pictures is 6-¼” x 5-¼”, and is an original, on heavy card stock, as was typical during that time period. It is in excellent condition. If this is your family or you can relate to the Brumbaugh family of Pontiac, IL during this time frame, please Email me directly at margerice@prodigy.net and I will get back to you soon.

According to “Genealogy of the Brumbach Families” by Gaius Brumbaugh, David Brumbaugh of Washington County, Maryland, was born March 17, 1776, and died April 23, 1842. He married Eve Kissecker in 1805 and founded the town of Middleburg (now State Line), Maryland. Recently the Kittochtinny Historical Society of Franklin Co, PA, printed some marriage announcements from the Franklin Telegraph / Chambersburg Times newspaper for November 22, 1841. The Brumbaugh entry of interest to me was: “Married on the 20th of Sept., by the Rev. J. Rebaugh, Mr. Lewis Barr, to Miss Caroline Brumbaugh, daughter of the late David Brumbaugh, all of Washington County, MD.” Records I have seen indicate there was only one adult David Brumbaugh living in Washington County around 1840, and I would expect that he was likely the father of Caroline Brumbaugh Barr. The contradiction of course then is that David died in 1842 after the marriage of his daughter in 1841, despite the newspaper account indicating he had already died by the time of the wedding. I’m confident the date of the newspaper article is correct. Does anyone have an original source reference for the death date of David Brumbaugh, so I can verify that April 23, 1842, is correct? Or does anyone have any suggestions for trying to solve this apparent contradiction? Thanks for your help, Jim

I am descended from the BRUMBAUGH and BEIGHTEL/BECHTEL families of Isaac and Susanna. Looking at the large fan chart of my direct ancestors, I find a number of BRUMBAUGH-BECHTEL marriages. These families lived very near each other in the 1800's in both Huntingdon Co., Pa. and in Bedford Co., Pa. Many marriages between the branches of the families took place. Let me know if you want more information. Dee
