Dear Bruce Fans from Jean Smallwood, I list below five sources (which do not agree) for the "early" BRUCE FAMILY. Let me know which you think is the most correct lineage. I will send my "Comparison Chart" by snailmail if you request. FIVE SOURCES FOR FAMILY OF BRUCE First Source-ROBERT THE BRUCE FAMILY- Book- Signers of the Magna Carta, 1215. See Clan Bruce (www.Tartans.com/clans/bruce.html) BRUSSE, Earl of Caithness and Sunderland, died in 1031 A.D. He married Ostrida of Gothland, and they had Rognvald (listed below). ROGNVALD (died in 1046 A.D.) was the General in the Army of King of Olaf in Norway. Through his second wife, Felicia of Normandy, he had a son, Brusi, who as far as can be found was the first to be called "Robert de Brusse". ROBERT de BRUSSE (Brusi) married Emma of Brittany, circa 1020 A.D. in Normandy. Note-See Comparision of Sources in Smallwood/Carter Bk. for the column which follows this lineage. HAD ROBERT de BRUSSE, 2nd. came with William the Conqueror from Normandy in 1066. married Agnes St. Clair (died 1080). Robert died in 1094 HAD ADAM de BRUSE, went to England in 1050 as attendant to Queen Emma, daughter of Richard I of Normandy. He married Emma Ramsay. HAD ROBERT de BRUSSE, 3rd who was born in 1078 and died in 1141.He married Agnes Bruce (Agnes Paynell) of Annandale, a distant cousin. HAD ROBERT BRUCE of Annandale married Euphemia. HAD ROBERT BRUCE II (Robert le Meschin), Lord of Annandale, died in 1194. He married Isabel of Scotland, daughter of William the Lion, King of Scotland HAD WILLIAM BRUCE- 3rd Baron of Annanadale, died in 1215. He married Christina HAD ROBERT BRUCE, 4th Baron of Annandale, died in 1245. He married Isobel of Huntingdone who died in 1252. HAD SIR ROBERT BRUCE, Lord of Annandale was born 1210, died on March 31, 1295. In May, 1240 married Isabella de Clare who was born on Nov. 2, 1226 HAD SIR ROBERT BRUCE, Lord of Annandale, born in July 1243 and died before June 14, 1302. In 1271, married, first, Marjorie (Marjory) Carrick, Countess Carrick. HAD ROBERT the BRUCE, Earl of Carrick, Lord Brus, King of Scotland. Was born on July 11 1274 and died on June 7, 1329. He married, first, Isabel Mar, who died in 1297; second marriage to Elizabeth of Ulster. Second Source-ROBERT THE BRUCE by Ronald McNair Scott, 1992 Scott writes: pg. 10 "The Bruces were members of that Anglo-Norman elite through whom the kings of England and Scotland maintained their sovereign rule. Reputedly descended from Lodver, the Norse Earl of Orkney, in the 10th century, the Bruces first made their impact on the ritish Isles when Adam de Brus, whose grandfather had migrated to Normandy, accompanied William the Conqueror to England." Note It is not clear from Scott if Adam or his grandfather accompanied William the Conqueror. 1 Grandfather of Adam de Brus (Bruce) -unnamed 2 Father of Adam-unnamed 3 Adam 4 Robert-d. 1141, 1st Lord of Annadale m. Lord of Annadale 6 *William-had son 7 Robert-d.1245 married Isobel (d. 1252), daug. of David (grandson of King David I)- had son 8 Robert, the Competitor-d. 1295 m. Isobel de Clare-had son 9 Robert -d. 1304, m. Marjorie of Carrick-had son 10 Robert, King of Scotland m. 1st Isabella of Mar and m. 2nd.Elizabeth de Burgh *Note-Lady Dame Beckwith Bruce, a daughter of William is shown in the charts of Beckwith/Rhine/Smallwood. Here, as in many other charts, only sons (not daughters) are listed. Third Source-HISTORY OF CLEVELAND (England) by Rev. John Graves-pub. 1808-reprint 1972 Note-I list Roman numerals as appears in my charts. They are listed as in the F&W encyclopedia. 1 Robert de Brus d. 1141-(Robert II) came to England with the Conqueror. Note-Other sources (including Smallwood data ) show Robert I (d. 1094) came to England with William the Conqueror. It would seem this Robert also accompanied them. Robert (d. 1141 had by conquest the Lordships of Skelton, Marske, Uplyum, Brotton, Danby, Leventon, Yam. He settled in the Yorkshire area of England and married Agnes, d/o Fulke Paynell with whom he had the Manor of Carleton in Balme. John Graves also lists a William d Brus ( brother of Robert d. 1141) d. 1155, Prior of Guisbro and buried in the Chapterhouse in Guisbro. 2 Adam was Lord of Skelton, Danby. He married Ivetta, d/o William de Arches. Widow of R. De Falmville. Note-Other sources (including Smallwood data) list wife as Agnes--and Ivetta as married to his son Adam. 3 Adam de Brus d. abt. 1180 (Smallwood data has 1st wife-Joanna Meschines and 2nd. wife - Ivatta de Arches. 4 Isabella married Sir Henry de Percy from whom descended the Percies, Earls of Northumberland. 4 Peter de Brus 1st married Agnes, d/o Stephen, Earl of Albemarle, widow of William de Romara, Earl of Lincoln 5 Peter 2nd. d. abt. 1240 in Marfeiles, married Helewife, d/o Gilbert de Lancester, Baron of Kendal 6 Peter de Brus 3rd. married Hillaria, d/o. Lord Malo(luco) or Mauley. Had 5 children. 7 Peter 4th d. 1271-never married 7 Agnes married Walter de Fauconberge (had land called Skelton and Marske) 7 Lucy married Marmaduke de Thweng (had land Danby, Brotton and Yam" 7 Margaret married Robert de Roffe (had land Kendal) 7 Ladrina married Sir John de Bella-aqua (or Bellew and had land Carleton in Balme) " 2 Robert de Brus (son of Robert d. 1141) from whom Kings of Scotland were descended.
