Bruce says his brother, Henry C Bruce, dec., & his brother, John Bruce, in 1812 bought of Robert Johnson, desc'd, 300 acres near the mouth of Kinniconick.......Henry C Bruce d. 15 Aug 1815, & since he had no children the land descednded to his father, John Bruce Sr., on 21 Sep 1815, John Bruce Sr. gave his interest in the land to George W Bruce... File 1887: HORATIO BRUCE vs. JOHN BRUCE, 1844-1847 Deposition of Tabitha Arnold, 10 Aug 1846, in Garrard Co., says in the division of the estate of her father, John Bruce, dec., she was allotted a tract of land in Mason Co. Her husband (who was living in 1828) rented the land to Hezekiah Jenkins. In 1834, with the help of her brother, Alezander Bruce, she purchased the interest of John Bruce in the slaves of her father, John Bruce. A Mr. Gaw, son in law of John Bruce, came to Garrard Co. with a letter from John Bruce. John Bruce had 8 children. Depos. of Rufus Boyle, 10 Aug 1846, Garrard Co., says he is a brother of John Boyle dec. late of Garrard Co. Says Tabitha Arnold is sister of John & Horatio Bruce. Depos. of Michael Salter, 21 Dec 1838, Garrard Co., speaks of his son, John S Salter, who purchased land of Horatio Bruce. (John S Salter was deceased at time of depos.) Depos. of Wm S Miller, 19 Jan 1844, Garrard Co., says Richard P Bruce was a brother of John & Horatio. Depos. of Alexander Bruce, Clarksburg, Ky, 30 Mar 1844, says he & Horatio Bruce dissolved partnership in salt-making about 1 Mar 1822. John Bruce sold his interest to his brother, Geo W Bruce. Says Richard P Bruce has been dead several years. Depos. of Alexander R McKee, Garrard Co., 12 Jul 1844, mentions Horatio Bruce paying Richard P Bruce for property at mouth of Sugar Creek (Garrard Co.) in 1828. John Pollard (postmaster at Landcaster Ky) was a witness. Pollard died in June 1833. Affidavit of John Bruce, 3 Apr 1845, states that Alexander Boyle resides in Tx & Thomas Owens in Ind. Both originally from Garrard Co. Depos. of Sarah Bruce, age 49, at her house in Mason Co., 7 Oct 1846, says Richard P Bruce in spring of 1838 sold a tract of land in Garrard Co. which he inherited from Brunetta Proctor. Depos. of Thomas Bruce, Clarksburg, Ky., 18 Aug 1846, speaks of his father, John Bruce. Depos. of Alexander Bruce, Clarksburg, Ky., 6 Aug 1847, says John Bruce left Lewis Co. & Ky in Apr or May, 1822, & did not return until about Aug 1823. John Bruce went to Tx in May 1822. Depos. of Alexander Bruce, Clarksburg, Ky., 20 Sep 1842, says William Jameson is a son in law of John Bruce. Speaks of Horatio Bruce trying to bring to a close the "estate of Beasley's heirs, one of which he has married." Depos. of Sarah Bruce, Clarksburg, Ky., 16 Apr 1845, says she is the widow of Richard P Bruce who has been dead several years. Depos. of Alexander Boyle, Garrard Co., 3 Nov 1845, says Robert Boyle died without issue & Alexander Boyle Sr. was his father. John Boyle is also dec'd. John Boyle died about the last of Jul, 1837, & Benjamin P Doty was his administrator. John Bruce states that John & Robert Bolye were two of his wife's brothers. Depos. of Alexander Bruce, 15 Apr 1845, says he came on a visit from Garrard Co. to Lewis Co. early in the fall of 1817 & found John Bruce & Horation Bruce engaged in salt makeing...Henry C Bruce & Joseph Morgan had, previous to the death of H. C. Bruce in Aug 1815, been in partnership. John Bruce's children were sent to school sometimes while living at home... Some of John's children were boarded out in Bourbon Co to go to school, one at Col. Clay's , one atCapt. Cass', & one at Mr. Bryan's....John Bruce left home in 1818 to attend the Alabama land sales & the sales of lots in the city of Florence at Mussel Shoals on the Tn.....Says Horatio Bruce helped settle the estate of the Beasley heirs, one of which he married. Speaks of Capt. Bragg, "my wife's father." Says that in the summer of 1817, he (Alex.) was in Bourbon Co. when Col. Henry Clay came to him in Paris & informed him that several wagons loaded with salt from John Bruce were in the neighborhood, etc....Pugh Price intermarried with the widow of Henry C Bruce. Polly Bruce was the name of H.C. Bruce's widow. George W Clay was the brother of H. C. Bruce's widow. Clay came to the salt works in 1819 on business for his sister. Says W. P. Greenup came to the salt works in 1819 & was pressed for money. Alex. Bruce got money from Capt. Bragg to loan Greenup. Greenup came to the works shortly after his trial & acquittal for participation in a duel at Frankfort. Depos. of Alex. Bruce, Clarksburg, Ky., 9 Feb 1844, says Mrs. Tabitha Arnold, sister of Alex. & John Bruce, traded her farm on Cabin Creek with Constantine Bruce for his farm in Garrard Co. & within a short while Constantine sold it to Hezekiah Jenkins. Says John Bolye was a brother in law of John Bruce. A deed dated 12 Apr 1838: Richard P Bruce, of Mason Co., sells to Horatio Bruce, of Mason Co., his undivided interest (being 1/7 part) of a tract of land in Garrard Co. on Back Creek, being the balance of a tract of land allotted to Brunetta Proctor in the division of the estate of John Bruce dec. A part of said tract was sold by Benj. Proctor & wife, Brunetta, in her lifetime. A deed date 20 Aug 1829: John Bruce & wife, Isabella, of Lewis Co., sell to Horatio Bruce, of Garrard Co., his interest in a tract of land in Garrard Co. which descended to him as an heir of John Bruce Sr. A mill seat & warehouse at the mouth of Sugar Creek were included. The following notes are from the transcript of a suit held in Garrard Co. between Benj. P Doty, Adm. of John Boyle, dec., against John Bruce: About 1824, John Bruce made a contract with U.S. government to improve navigation on the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers. John Boyle & Robert Boyle entered into a contract with him. John Boyle provided money for boats, machinery, etc. Robert Boyle died & his father, Alex. Boyle Sr., administered on his estate & was his heir at law. Alex. Boyle Sr. has also departed this life intestate & the administration has been granted to Henry Terrill & Rufus Boyle. Depos. of Michael Salter, Lancaster, Ky., 13 Sep 1843, says he is "going on 87 yrs. old." Depos. of Gabriel J Salter, 13 Sep 1843, says Michael Salter is his father & John S Salter his brother. File4360 WILLIAM L POAGE vs THOMAS H. C. BRUCE & GEORGE W. BRUCE, Dec 1855 A controversy over a tract of 50 acres on McDowell Creek, in Lewis Co., the following Bruce relationships are mentioned: (1) George W Bruce Sr. has departed this life intestate leaving George W., Thomas H.C., Horatio F., & Perigan P. Bruce, his children & heirs at law, (2) Perigan P. Bruce has also departed this life intestate leaving an only child, Perry P Bruce, his heir at law, who is an infant, (3) Horatio F Bruce has also departed this life without child or children. File 1552, Lewis Co. Lawsuits RICHARD P BRUCE vs ELIZABETH BRUCE, Jan 1825. Divorce proceedings. The bill of complaint states that Richard P Bruce married Elizabeth Bullitt, in Mar 1814, & they lived together as man & wife for about 7 yrs. The depos. of Achilles Ballinger, taken at the mouth of Sugar Creek, Garrard Co., states that he had been acquainted with Richard P Bruce for "20 odd yrs." Ballinger says he had lived at the mouth of Sugar Creek years before the Bruces were married. The depos. of Tyree Harris, taken at the mouth of Sugar Creek, 8 Sep 1825, says he had been acquainted with R.P. Bruce 25 yrs. The depos. of James Fletcher, Abner Davidson, John Gromer, Henry Jenkins, & Mordecai Crutchfield, all taken in Garrard Co., Ky., in Sep 1825, state they had known R.P. Bruce many years. The depos. of Jesse Hill, states that he went with R.P. Bruce to Lexington, Ky., & while there a group of ruffians fell on Bruce & beat him unmercifully. Elizabeth ("Betsy") Bruce was in Lexington at the time of this beating. (Note: There is much personal information about these people for anyone tracing the family, but it is deleted here for obvious reasons). The divorce suit of Richard P. & Elizabeth Bruce does not state if the divorce was granted. According to the History Of Lewis County, by Rev. Ragan, Pg 377, Richard P. Bruce's history is as follows: "Richard P Bruce married in Garrard Co., & then moved to Indiana. His wife 7 children all died of fever & ague, & in 1830, he returned to Vanceburg, Ky. He married Sallie Cofrin, by whom he had two children: Horatio, who is dead, & Robert who lived in Forman's Bottom. Richard Bruce had a small farm on Cabin Creek, where he died." (Note: Sarah (Sallie) Cofrin, mentioned above, was the widow of William Cofrin, an early resident of Vanceburg. William Cofrin died sometime in the early 1830's. The marriage is not recorded in Lewis Co. It may be in Mason Co. or Adams Co., Oh.) Lewis Co. Will Book, pg. 147: Inventory of the estate of George W. Amanda Bruce staes that her husband, Alexander Bruce, owned a tract of land on the Ohio River in the upper end of Forman's Bottom (purchased of John Forman & consisting of between 130 & 200 acres) & a brick house, in Vanceburg, formerly the property of Thomas Lukins dec. Amanda Bruce states that her father, Thomas Bragg, dec., left her land on the Ohio River, near Vanceburg, where her mother, Lucy Bragg, now lives, & some slaves. Alexander Bruce, in his answer states they were married in Feb 1819. Says Amanda was the youngest of her father's children. Depos. of Henry C Bruce, 22 Mar 1842, says he is the son of the plaintiff (Amanda Bruce) & that he left home six years ago to assist T.E. Redden, a merchant. Has a brother, Thomas Bruce. Thomas J Bruce, in his depos. says that three of Alexander & Amanda's sons are well able to support her. The divorce was granted & the estate divided.(Alex. Bruce & Amanda Bruce lived separately after the divorce but they are buried on the same lot in the Woodland Cemetery, Vanceburg, where they were reburied after the old Vanceburg Cemetery was abandoned.) File 501, Lewis Co. Lawsuits MARY (POLLY) MOSS vs GEORGE W BRUCE & wife, ANN. Sep1816 In this case of slander, there were several relationships mentioned: Mrs. Ann Bruce, the wife of George W Bruce, was accused of making slanderous statements about Mary (Polly) Moss. File 4198, Lewis Co., Lawsuits AUGUSTUS P & THOMAS J MCALLISTER vs. LEITCH & BRUCE HEIRS, May 1853. The plaintiffs state that John W Leitch departed this life leaving John W Leitch, Augustus P Leitch, Mary Hare (Harr), Ellen Carr, Elizabeth Winter, Serena Henry, Francis Black, John A Bruce, Ann J Bruce, Thomas H Bruce, Mary T Bruce & Malinda J Bruce, his heirs, together with Augustus P McAllister & Thos. J McAllister. At John W Leitch's death, he possessed 50 acres in Forman's Bottom adjoining the lands of P.H.C. Bruce, & also another tract of 50 acres on Scaffold Lick. They sue for their interest, which in 1/9. John W Leitch purchased the interest of Serena Henry & Francis Black, & Augustus P Leitch has pruchased the interest of Mary Hare, Elizabeth Winter, & Ellen Carr.
