Joyce, We have communicated before regarding these Bruce's. It has been about 2 - 3 years ago, so that tells you I'm still looking for Allen. Where do you get the information that his first name was John? Everything I have been able to find, (marriage record in Hopkins Co., KY; 1860 census on Webster Co., KY, where I found his wife Pernecia married to William Williams; and some land information in Hopkins Co., KY), all just list Allen Bruce. I have been checking around today via on-line and haven't been able to find anything on a John Allen Bruce, J. Allen Bruce, J.A. Bruce, etc. I can't find anything on Allen Bruce except for the three places listed above. I hope someday to find Allen and his parents and birth place. Maybe then, I can go further back on this Bruce line. I did see the entry you mentioned regarding the Bruce that was appointed guardian of a Price child. I have that somewhere, but can't lay my hands on it at the moment. The Troop name is not familiar to me at this time, so I don't know whether this would be connected to whatever line of Bruce's that I'm connected with. Thanks for your response and I'll keep lookiing for my Allen. I also wish you good luck on your search for your Bruce's. Hopefully, one day we can get them all connected. Jackie Jjwilson31@aol.com wrote:My great-grandmother was Mahuldia Bruce who married John Furgerson. We believe they were both born in Tennessee, but have not documented which county. All records of where they were born -- and the first 5 of their children -- say Tennessee. They moved to Hopkins County in about 1853-54. They are first found in the 1860 census, but the birth of a child and record of land purchase indicate their arrival in the early to mid 1850s. For a long time I thought Mahuldia may have been related to the John Allen Bruce who married Pernicia Price. I am inclined to believe now that there was some relationship between her and another John Allen Bruce who married, in Lincoln County, TN a Clarinda VanHooser and (3) Louisa Jane Coats. Notes of a great-aunt have indicated that she knew that an Allen Bruce was somehow connected to Mahuldia, and that his son, Tom, lived for awhile on the "Furgerson Compound". Other people that I have had contact with say that all of the Bruces who were in Hopkins County were related. There was a Cador Bruce, born about 1839 who married Mary Ann Fox. He was the son of a Jeremiah Bruce Some of these Bruces had land grants in Hopkins, Christian and Muhlenberg Counties. A portion of Christian County became Hopkins County about 1820, and I believe that this is possibly the area where they lived. None of this information helps you particularly, but I thought perhaps comparing notes on what we know of Bruces in Hopkins County might be of some value in your search. I have done a lot of research into them. I know that the John Allen Bruce that married Louisa Coats was from Lincoln County, Tennessee originally, and I have a possible lineage for him that I got from another Bruce researcher. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence -- nothing documented, as I remember. There was some connection to a John Furgerson in some court papers that further made me believe that this was the same Bruces. Nothing, however, that would have proven any connection by marriage. I also came across a court record where a John Allen Bruce was made guardian for a child by the surname Price. If that is of interest to you I'll try to find the date and name of the child involved in that guardianship. It was in Hopkins County. I'll check through the information I have gathered on Bruces. Haven't looked at it for awhile. One of the names from Lincoln County, later Hopkins County, Ky that I have been looking at is James (or John, don't remember which) Troop. When he died, John Furgerson was made executor of his estate, and one of the Troop children was living in the Furgerson household at the time of the 1860 census. It is possible that the connection to Troops was through the Bruce line of Mahuldia. Does this name mean anything to you? Surely would like to connect up all of these Bruces.
