His middle name may be Benton, and he was married to Elizabeth, surname unknown, who was also born in SC in 1808. They had two children in SC, Mary L., born 1832, and Henry, born 1836. They relocated to Marengo County, Alabama around 1837, and had five more children there: Newton (b. 1838), Julia Serena (b. 1840), Sarah (b. 1842), John Benton (jr? b. 1844), and Lizzy (b. 1846). John B. Bruce was the Sheriff for Marengo County. His will was witnessed in Feb 1857, and proven in April 1857. His daughter Julia Serena Bruce married Walter Hellen Grant (my great-grandparents), editor of the "Linden Jeffersonian", on Aug 12, 1857, at the residence of Mrs. (Elizabeth) Bruce. If anyone has info to share with me about this Bruce family I'd greatly appreciate it!

Bruce b: July 22, 1917 in Streator, LaSalle Cty, IL d: January 08, 1920 in Streator, LaSalle Cty, IL ..........3 Maurice Bruce b: December 1890 in LaSalle Cty, IL ....2 James Bruce Some further information on John, husband of Honora: He is found on page 171 of "Past and Present of Lasalle Cty, 1877" as a recruit for Henshaw's Battery Light Artillery on Jan. 8, 1864. He deserted one day later on Jan. 9th. He would only have been 14 years of age or 13. Found 1870 census in Streator with the family of John Ward in House 120-114. Census says he was from England and was a 20 year old coal miner. John Ward was born in Scotland and was 50. His wife, Jessie, was 50 and from Scotland. John was a miner. They had John age 20 b England and a miner plus Elizabeth Ward 14 and Robert Ward 10, both born in IL. In "Past and Present of LaSalle Cty, 1877 p. 530" is John Bruce, miner of Bruce Twp. The 1880 (135-140) Bruce Twp, LaSalle Cty, IL census says he was born in Scotland as were his parents. It gives his age as 29 and he is a driver in the coal mines. Nora is 25 and born in PA, James E. is 4 and born in IL and Jennie E. is 2 and born in IL. They live next door to John and Sarah Ferator, her brother. There was an obit published in the Streator Free Press Weekly for Mrs. John Bruce Sept. 25, 1875. She may have been his mother.
