Elizabeth x Grant, widow and relict of John Grant, and late widow and relict of Charles Bruce of King Geo. Co. Whereas, Wm. Pannell, Decd. (father of sd. Elizabeth Grant), by his will, recorded in Richmond Co., did devise to the sd. Elizabeth a negro wench and her issue, and the negro now has two living children, which were with other negroes by the will of Chas. Bruce (late husband of sd. Elizabeth Grant) given to be divided amongst his children, which division hath since been made setting apart the sd. negro to Mary Bruce, now Mary James; another negro to Frances Bruce, now Frances Banks; and another negro to Margaret Bruce., sd. Elizabeth Grant "of the natural love and affection I bear unto my well beloved daughters, the sd. Mary James, Frances Banks and Margaret Bruce," etc., confirming the legacies of the negroes from sd. Charles Bruce, etc. Witnesses, Wm. Nelson, James Nelson, junr.; Gerard Banks. July 2, 1764. Philip Alexander Bruce born at Staunton Hill, Charlotte county, Virginia, March 7, 1856, son of Charles Bruce and Sarah Seddon, his wife. His education was commenced under private tuition at his own home, which was supplied with one of the finest libraries in the state, and was continued at Norwood school, Nelson county, from whence he went to the University of Virginia. There he devoted especial attention to English studies, and was for a time one of the editors of the university magazine. He was a convincing and forceful speaker, and was awarded the debater's medal of the Jefferson Society. Two years were then spent in the study of law at Harvard University, from which he received his degree as Bachelor of Laws. He became the associate editor of the "Richmond Times" about 1890, and about 1892 became corresponding secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, remaining the incumbent of this office until his resignation in 1898, in order to continue his colonial research work in England. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws from William and Mary College in 1907. In the field of literature he has achieved an eminent reputation, and is the author of: "Economic History of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century," "The Plantation Negro as a Freeman," "Rise of the New South," "Social Life in Virginia in the Seventeenth Century," "Life of Gen. R. E. Lee," and "Short History of the United States." He has also written many articles of a high standard for English and American periodicals. From DAR books Charles Bruce (1735-92) was appointed captain, 1776, for which service he received a land grant. He was born in King George County; died in Fredericksburg, Va. Charles Bruce (1754-85) served as corporal and sergeant, 1776, in Captain Todd's company, Colonel Craft's regiment of artillery. He was born and died in Brookfield, Mass. Descendant of Sergt. Charles Bruce, as follows: 1. Walter Smith Bruce (b. 1865) m. 1890 Elizabeth M. Bibbins (b. 1863). 2. James Henderson Bruce (1827-1906) m. 1862 Sarah L. Cookingham (b. 1840). 3. Charles Bruce, Jr. (1782-1852), m. 2d 1820 Sallie Wallis (1793-1839). 4. Charles Bruce m. 1779 Mercy Gilbert (1760-1837).
