JOHN E.2 BRUCE, b. October 1850, England or Scotland but prob. OH; m. HONORA F. FERRITER, December 10, 1874, LaSalle Cty, IL; b. October 1853, Towanda, Bradford Cty, PA; d. Streator, LaSalle Cty, IL. Notes for JOHN E. BRUCE: He is found on page 171 of "Past and Present of Lasalle Cty, 1877" as a recruit for Henshaw's Battery Light Artillery on Jan. 8, 1864. He deserted one day later on Jan. 9th. He would only have been 14 years of age or 13. Found 1870 census in Streator with the family of John Ward in House 120-114. Census says he was from England and was a 20 year old coal miner. John Ward was born in Scotland and was 50. His wife, Jessie, was 50 and from Scotland. John was a miner. They had John age 20 b England and a miner plus Elizabeth Ward 14 and Robert Ward 10, both born in IL. In "Past and Present of LaSalle Cty, 1877 p. 530" is John Bruce, miner of Bruce Twp. The 1880 (135-140) Bruce Twp, LaSalle Cty, IL census says he was born in Scotland as were his parents. It gives his age as 29 and he is a driver in the coal mines. Nora is 25 and born in PA, James E. is 4 and born in IL and Jennie E. is 2 and born in IL. They live next door to John and Sarah Ferator, her brother. There was an obit published in the Streator Free Press Weekly for Mrs. John Bruce Sept. 25, 1875. She may have been his mother. Ferritor d. May 26, 1881, aged 74 years. "Bruce" on the base of Honora Ferritor's stone, but no names or dates. (Honora Ferritor is mother of Nora b. 1853) Nearby markers: Frederick J. Notes for JAMES BRUCE: I am not sure this is a brother of John but he also enlisted from Grand Rapids, LaSalle Cty, IL in the Civil War - IL Infantry. He was a private that mustered in Aug. 27, 1862 and deserted March 14, 1863.
