    1. Re: BALUS BRUCE
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: BRUCE, FARRAR, JACKSON, & EDWARDS Classification: Census Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XOG.2ACIB/773.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello Jo Ann - Just checked the 1850 Census of Anderson Co., SC, which is available on Ancestry.com. There are 49 BRUCEs listed - many of them female. "My" Harriett, age 20, & some of her siblings (brothers: Handy & Samuel), as well as half-siblings, are on page 282 (according to Ancestry.com). --------------------------- I suspect that Harriett's father, Charles Perry BRUCE (Jr.), is the Charles who is listed on page 175. In fact, that is what I found years ago at the National Archives: SOUTH CAROLINA 1850 CENSUS, p. 20 BRUCE, Charles of Anderson Co., page 175, Western Dist. Charles Age 59 Born GA (c1791) Harriett Age 20 Born SC (c1830) Deaf & Dumb ---------------------------- Pages 315 & 321 (Ancestry.com) have quite a few BRUCEs. John, Thomas, & James are on page 178 (Ancestry.com). +++++++++++++++++ Another BRUCE researcher furnished me with the names of three brothers of "my" Charles Perry BRUCE (Jr.), who lived 1790 - 1874: 1. Robert (1783-1860) His body was buried in Franklin Co., GA. Married - Susannah SLOAN 4 sons: Charles, James Madison, Benjamin F., David Sloan 2. John married Laura FARRAR (No further data) 3. Thomas married Nancy JACKSON (No further data) I do not know if his brothers ever lived in Anderson Co., SC. ++++++++++++++++++ Besides "my" Harriett's brothers, Handy Harris (a dentist in Anderson, b. 1818) & Samuel Gray (b. 1833), she also had bothers named Charles Perry (III) (b. 1823) & James Raford (b. 1825, SC; d. 1908, TX). There are at least two by the name of James listed in the 1850 Census of Anderson Co., SC. Harriett's half-brothers were: Everett (b. c1843) & Abraham. Both appear to be listed in the 1850 Census of Anderson Co., SC. Harriett & her sisters, Mary Anne & Caroline, are said to have been deaf mutes. All three of them married. Harriett to another deaf mute, Josephus Berry EDWARDS, who was one of the first teachers at the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring, Floyd Co., GA. ================= The following counties had BRUCEs listed in the 1850 Census: Anderson Edgefield Greenville - Willis BRUCE Lancaster Laurens Orangeburg Richland ++++++++++++++++++ Re: BRUCEs of Greenville District, SC Here are some excerpts taken from "BRUCE, Historical Papers #2," edited by Michael V. Stambach- Bruce, ORB, The Bruce Family Historical Society, The Royal Bruce Society, 1991, Pp. 37-38: "Benjamin BRUCE arrived in Greenville District some time prior to 1800. He may be the only early Greenville Co. BRUCE of whose origins we have sure knowledge. "In the past Benjamin has been identified as a son of Charles BRUCE, Sr. This appears to have been in error. Benjamin is not in association with the family of Charles BRUCE. "Benjamin BRUCE married Mary EDWARDS, daughter of John EDWARDS, at Fauquier Co., VA on 25 Dec. 1787. John EDWARDS was bondsman. The will of John EDWARDS was proven on 16 March 1801 in Greenville Co., SC." * * * "It is thought that Benjamin BRUCE may be the same who is found in the Tax Lists (Heads of Families) of Fluvanna Co., VA in 1782. * * * "In 1793 Benjamin BRUCE bought 300 acres along the Enoree River from Gibson Southern (Deed Bk. C, p. 450). In 1821 (recorded 1821) Benjamin BRUCE sold 300 acres along the Enoree River in Greenville Co. to Aaron Kemp (Deed Bk. L, p. 256). * * * "Very little is known of Benjamin BRUCE. It appears that he left the area at an early date, perhaps following his sale in 1821 of the land at Enoree River to Aaron Kemp. It seems likely that Benjamin was among the early SC migrants who moved west as native Americans were continually forced further from their homelands." --=+=--=+=--=+=--=+=-- J. D.
