Claudia and all I will be checking it out as soon as possible. I should have more news about the book by the end of the week and will post it to the list. Then anyone who wants copies can let me know. :-) I hope I didn't speak out of turn about the history. I know there are three sections to the book. I thought one was about the history of this family. I hope for all of you that I remember right. Sheri
Hello, Sheri, >>While doing my research at the Iowa State Historical Library I recently came across a book with the history and documented genealogy of this Thomas Bruce. With son Roger etc. << I, too, am a descendant of Thomas and Magdalen Bruce, through son, Roger. I would be extremely interested to know the title of the book you mentioned, since my information states that absolutely nothing is known of the origin or ancestry of our Thomas! (New England HIstoric Genealogical Register, Vol.CXXXVI, October, 1982, pp.294-306, "Thomas Bruce of Sudbury and Marlborough, Massachusetts".) Claudia Cridland
Do you have an address or email address for Duke? It probably won't do much, at this stage of the game, but I would like to write a letter of protest regarding the destruction of the cemetery. Perhaps this is something that the Indiana Historical Society should be lobbying to have changed. Historical preservation is their business after all. While on a trip to Arkansas I recently met up with a couple of older distant cousins. They're in their late 70's, early 80's and it was wonderful to meet them. They were able to answer several of my questions including: Where is the cemetery that was located on the old homestead? Monk's father had been buried there in 1914 and he took us back into the woods. It has not been preserved or tended to and is in a state of disarray. I am now in the process of obtaining permission to restore it. Weyerhauser Corporation is the company that now owns the land, and thankfully, they have been willing to at least listen and work with me on this issue. Of course, the land where the cemetery is located is not scheduled for any type of construction project. Its unfortunate that big business has a way of railroading many folks. These big companies seem to have lost their perspective. If nobody does business with them (i.e.- the customer, like you and me) then they don't have a market and can't do business. So as consumers we do have a say. I for one, will write and let them know that disturbing the resting places of ancestors is not looked on favorably from this consumers point of view. Anyone else want to write?
Haven't posted in awhile, so here's what I have. Hope to hear from a cousin soon. Teresa (Bruce) Covey Descendants of Thomas Bruce Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS1 BRUCE was born 1810 in Tennessee. He married JIMMA in Tennessee. Children of THOMAS BRUCE and JIMMA are: i. MARY E.2 BRUCE. ii. SARAH J. BRUCE. iii. JOHN M. BRUCE. iv. JAMES M. BRUCE. v. THOMAS JR. BRUCE. 2. vi. SEBURN FRANKLIN2 BRUCE (THOMAS1) was born November 28, 1855 in Tenn., and died March 2, 1923 in Gainesville, TX.. He married VIOLET ELIZABETH THOMAS in TX. Notes for SEBURN FRANKLIN BRUCE: With a death certificate that states his name as S.C. Bruce, and now his obituary, I am presuming that Seburn Franklin Bruce should be also known as S.C. Bruce. Info passed down thru the family states his name to be Seburn Franklin, but there is evidently erroneous info here. Obituary of S.C. Bruce: S.C. Bruce, 69, died at 11 o'clock this morning at his home two miles east of Gainesville after a lingering illness. He is survived by three grown sons, T.B. and G.H. of Cooke county and John M. of Childress. Also three brothers, J.M. and D.W. who reside near Gainesville and T.W. of Bomar, Okla. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. J.H. Chism officiating. Burial will be made in the Nelson Grove cemetery with Undertaker S.W. Gibson in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Bruce was a well known truck and fruit grower, having resided in this county for some time and marketing his products here. A strange coincident is connected with his death. Exactly 21 years ago today at practically the same hour, Mr. Bruce's wife died, leaving several small children. He has been a widower since. To Norris and CJ Maddox, I'm sorry I didn't make a note about the Title of the book. I will be making another trip to Iowa City later this week and would be happy to get more information and copies. I'll let you know the cost of copies. Other wise don't worry about any costs. As for my own familiy I'm looking for the parents of William Bruce. He was born at sea coming from Scotland around 1797-1800. I have his age by census records. He married Hannah MEASE/MIES in (Huntingdon county?) Pennslyvania. She was the daughter of Johann George Miess and Christina KERN(s). The Mies' died in Centre county, PA . William and Hannah recieved land in Huntingdon co. from them. They moved on to JoDavies co, Illinois late in the 1850's with most or all of their children. Christina, George, William, Sarah, Amelia, Wells John, Harriet, Laticia, James, Hannah, Jacob and Catherine. George Bruce married Harriet MAPLES, daughter of Daniel Maples and Paulina MILLETT of New York. They were married in JoDaviess county, Illinois and moved to Benton county, Iowa about 1870 and lived out their lives in the Vinton area. Any help in finding common descendents or parents of William is appreciated. Thanks, Sheri

Dear Cousins, I have seen some information recently about Alexander Bruce and his wife, Mary "Polly" Lipscomb. As far as I know now, they are not in our line. But I wanted to let all of you know that I have some information on them that I ordered through the local library. It is 20 or 25 pages long. It contains all kinds of interesting material, such as Mary's will. I will be glad to do "look-ups" if you will be very specific. It was compiled and edited by June A. Bruce Stubbs and came from the McClung Collection, East Tennessee Historical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Frances
