Her father was George Bruce who died in 1856 in Cherokee County, GA. Her mother is unknown and Larua's date of birth, death, and place of burial are unknown. Also if you know anything about the Tumlin, I am also interested. I am Paul Tumlin. Address is 2085 Clairmeade Valley Rd, Atlanta, GA 30329. In a small Southern town there was a "Nativity Scene" that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me. The three wise men were wearing firemen's helmets. Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left. At a "Quik Stop" on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets. She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, "You darn Yankees never do read the Bible!" I assured her that I did, but simply couldn't recall anything about firemen in the Bible. She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled thru some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said, "See, it says right here, 'The three wise man came from afar.'"
Hope the following information will be helpful to somebody. I am especially interested in any information anyone might have about the Bruces who received land grants or warrants in Hopkins County. I am trying to connect them to my ggrandmother, Mahulda Bruce Furgerson. Joyce Kentucky Land Grants The following information was found in the book, The Kentucky Land Grants. This book was found in the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. The following Bruces received Grants in County Court Orders. I am copying the columns that list, in order, the Grantee, Date of Survey, County and Watercourse. The book also gives the book and page number in which the grant is found as well as the number of acres. Bruce, Kader 11/14/1835 Hopkins Wiers Cr. Bruce, Bennett 7/27/1841 Muhlenberg Cypress Ct. I am seeking any information on the family of Sarah Mitchel Bruce. Sarah Married L.D. Peck in 1878. Does anyone have a Bruce who married a Mitchel? Thanks Bill Peck
This is in response to a query posted several weeks ago asking about a John Bruce of Pennsylvania to which I responded that they could be found in Frederick Co Va. The party then responded by requesting the name of the book at which time my email got deleted and I do not have the name of the requesting party. The name of the book I referred to is: JOHN BRUCE OF THE SHENANDOAH by Violet Laverne Bruce, B.A. This book traces the Bruces of Frederick Co (Va) and Brucetown. John married Rachel Littler, who was a Quaker and was disowned by the Quakers. I apologize for any inconvenience and I sincerely hope the requested party sees this message. Bea Hudson Hampton, VA

Mary/Polly BRUCE was born about 1774 in Amelia Co. VA. Died 23 Sept 1859 in Prince Edward Co. VA. She was daughter of Alexander BRUCE and second wife, which her name is unknown, but I believe her mother to have been Rachel WOODSON. Married John QUEENSBERRY before 1795. No marriage record survives but she is named as Polly CUSHENBERRY, wife of John CUSHENBERRY in her father's September 1795 Nottoway Co. Will. In the Prince Edward Co. VA 1859 Death Register, Mary/Polly QUEENSBERRY is listed as being 85 years old, died of "old age", parent is listed as Alexander BRUCE, widow of John QUEENSBERRY and the informant was a son, Alexander QUEENSBERRY. John QUEENSBERRY operated an "Ordinary" in the area of Green Bay, VA. (P.E. Co) He died in 1813. Left no will but his inventory covers several pages in the Prince Edward Co. Court Books and several Deeds are recorded for his children and wife after his death. The 1810 census for Prince Edward Co. VA listed John QUEENSBERRY as head of household, age 45 plus. Three males under 10 years of age, and one between 10 and 16 years old. Females included were two females under 10 years and one female between 26 and 45 years old. Children are not in the order that they were born. Names taken from a list of heirs of John QUEENSBERRY in the division of his estate.. Alexander QUEENSBERRY born about 1796 Prince Edward Co. Can anyone tell me what years the vital records go back to in Virginia. I need birth records for about 1797-1800, Death records after 1800, and immigration/naturalization records for that same period. Do they exist and what's the best way to get them without knowing a county. My only clue to start at the county level would be a port of entry from Scotland. Any clues? Thanks for any advise Sheri
Hi everyone, I braved the horrible midwestern winter weather today and returned to Iowa City. Here's what I found out about the book that is about Thomas Bruce. It is titled THOMAS BRUCE OF SUDBURY AND MARLBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS. By Winifred Fahey Pelley, Lindsley Reese Bailey, Winsor Bruce, Laura Lindquist Fahey, Miriam Fahey Rudd and Catherine Rose Fahey. It is acually an enlarged version of an work originally published in The New England Historical & Genealogical Register Vol CXXXVI, Oct. 1982, pgs 294-306. The booklet has three sections. The first is a narritive history of Thomas Bruce. It has alot of details of his land, deeds and will. It is very well documented with lots of sources listed. This section is 13 pages long and does list LDS reference numbers. I was able to get photocopies of this section for anyone who is interested. The second section is family pages and the third section is ancestery charts for those listed in the book. The library would not copy these second and third sections due to possible copywrite laws. But I did copy them by hand. (I got a blister from writing them all). I will, over the next week or so put them into my computer and they will be available by an email attachment for anyone who wants them or I will print them and send them by mail. I noted in the charts that several of the descendents ended up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If these branches haven't been documented by court house records and anyone wants them, I would be happy to get those as Cedar Rapids is where I live. The family page for Thomas and Magdelen included 4 sons, Thomas abt 1665, John abt 1667, Roger abt 1670 and David abt 1675. Of these 4 there are charts for John, Roger and David. Of the anscestor charts several go back to the early 1600's and at least one that dates back to one generation prior to a child born in 1597, Holland. These are of course on the lines that married into the Bruce line. If anyone has specific questions, let me know and I'll look them up for you. And I'll get the charts done as soon as possible (right after I finish my term paper). :-) Sheri

Researchers have tried to solve the mystery and identification of the first Alexander BRUCE found in Amelia County VA. Speculation could be that the Alexander BRUCE who was a Jacobite, who was arrested and sent to the colonies in 1716, unindentured was the father of our Alexander BRUCE? There are other BRUCES in Southside VA, but no positive proof has been found to determine their relationship. This Deed of Gift was recorded 42 years before Alexander Jr died, proving that the Alexander Sr was his father. No one old and helpless, giving all of his property away, could have lived 42 more years, married three more times, and sired at least 15 more children, amassed slaves, and thousands of acres of land. This has to be our immigrant ancestor! Am always open to discussions. ...whether pro or con Amelia Co. VA "Deed of Gift. James BRUCE born about 1787 Nottoway Co. VA, son of Alexander BRUCE and Ann PENICK. Daniel VERSER was appointed guardian for James after the death of his father. Nothing is known about James, possible that he died young or he moved to another state. Much research needs to be done on this James BRUCE. Jane BRUCE was born about 1789, daughter of Alexander BRUCE and Ann PENNICK. Daniel VERSER was appointed her guardian after the death of her father, Alexander BRUCE. It still remains a mystery to researchers of what happened to James, his sister Jane, and their mother Ann PENICK BRUCE. I am hoping that by posting this skimpy data on the last two children of Alexander BRUCE, someone else has come up with evidence of what happened to them?
