    1. John Bruce of Winchester Va
    2. Don D. Terry
    3. I have been watching this Bruce List for many, many months waiting for lightening to strike and it has with three postings in the last couple of weeks regarding my wife's ancestors (I'm the genealogist of the family). These postings were: Douglas Parker = son William Bruce s/o James Bruce Sr s/o John Bruce of Winchester Va Harman Clark = son James Bruce Jr s/o James Bruce Sr s/o John Bruce of Winchester Va Jo (near Atlanta) = son James Bruce Jr s/o James Bruce Sr s/o John Bruce of Winchester Va add to the list my wife Charlotte Terry = daughter Margaret Bruce d/o James Bruce Sr s/o John Bruce of Winchester Va Margaret Bruce married David Cox - they had Margaret Ann Cox who married William Friend McMahon Sr -- etc. I have lots of data regarding this Cox - McMahon connection. This McMahon was also descended from the McMahon line which brought forth the Margaret McMahon who was the spouse of our James Bruce Sr. All of the information I have on the John Bruce family came from the book entitled "JOHN BRUCE of THE SHENANDOAH" written by Violet Laverne Bruce and privately published in 1987. I am very much interested in opening a dialogue with all persons who have an interest in this JOHN BRUCE line. I would particularly be interested in any and all data regarding the parentage of John Bruce and the sources of information. Our daughter has an Englishman for a husband and lives in London. On trips there I have researched at the Public Records Office in London and also at the Scottish Registers Office in Edinburg -- at those times, I was researching my McCulloch line and did not have the Bruce connection to investigate. We plan another trip to the UK in May so hope that, with my new connections here on the Bruce List, I can develop a Bruce research plan to work on at that time. With Best Regards Don D. 2. Dear Bruce List, This is just a quick note to tell everyone I am still working on the information from the book I found. I haven't forgotten. I am just really short on time lately. I am in transition from one job to another and am also a student working on term papers and finals. I am working on a tree that can be sent as an email attachment to all that are interested. I will then send out hard copies of the information to anyone who wants them. I have access to free copies so there won't be any charge for them. Be patient and I will work as fast as I can. :-) I am going thru emails soon and will try to do look up's for those of you that requested specific information. Sheri

    2. Douglas S. and Janice M. Parker
    3. Hi Jo: Thanks so much. I did have the info on the Bruces back to Patrick, but have wondered after visiting Scotland if the family would have moved as much between generations. The distances between Banff, Portsoy, Longside and Leochel-Cushnie, where John's children were christened, is not insignficant. But, it certainly is possible. Leochel-Cushnie is a tiny rural hamlet 30 plus miles west of Aberdeen. One truly seems to go back in time to venture over hill and through forest to reach it. There is no village proper there, just an old church and scattered farms. We also met some very friendly "Highland Coos" (cattle), which look like shaggy Texas Longhorns, in Leochel-Cushnie. We took some pictures of the Leochel-Cushnie area and am thinking about scanning them and sending them on to interest Bruce cousins if I can figure out how to do so. 3. Sherri, This is my first time writing to the Bruce Digest. I am very interested in the Thomas Bruce and son David Bruce line. I have gathered a lot of information on Thomas, but I don't have much of anything on David. He died early and left only one child - David Bruce, Jr. The following is my descent line: 1. Thomas Bruce and Magdalene 2. David Bruce/Mary Bigelow 3. David Bruce (b. Dec. 20, 1700, Watertown, MA) Hannah Pierce (b. Nov. 1, 1724, Watertown, MA) 4. Elijah Bruce (b. Betsy Bruce Olsen I have a copy of the Fahey et. al. article, but I would be very happy to receive the enlarged article and corresponding materials. Thank you in advance for what you can send. Is Cedar Rapids, Iowa anywhere near Red Oak, Iowa? Charles Bruce (#7) and his wife left Vermont in 1870 for Red Oak and stayed there until 1875. He had hoped that the weather there would be good for his health. In 1875 they moved on to Turner, Oregon where he later died. I am wondering if there might be some family connection. In a family where the children were given family names, I am unable to discover where the George and the Henry came from. I have had difficulty with the Sarah (Sally) Wright line and with the Blackmer line in Greenwich, MA. Thanks again, Sherri, and to anyone else who might be able to add to my family history. 2. I have a few pages taken from a book entitled Alexander Bruce of Southside Virginia and Some of His Descendants. There is a lot of info about Alexander Bruce, Jr., who married Mary "Polly" Lipscomb in Nottoway Co., VA. I ordered it from my county library, but since I was requesting material on John Daniel and John Wesley Bruce, they copied only those pages that they thought were pertinent. For instance, the first page I have is #416. I feel sure that you would find what you are after in this book. It was compiled and edited by June A. Bruce Stubbs and came to me from the McClung Collection, East Tennessee Historical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee. Let me know if you have any luck obtaining it. I will be near Knoxville in a few weeks and will be glad to try to get it for you if you run into a problem. Other associated surnames include Lipscomb, Brown,Watson, Fowlkes, Cabaniss, Neal, Baynes, Gayle, and Wootton. Frances Bruce

    3. > I am a new member of the list. I descend from John Bruce, who settled in Winchester, VA @ 1740 and died there in 1748. I descend from his son James Bruce (m. Margaret McMahon), grandson William Bruce (m. Polly Lucas Perciful), ggrandson Major William Bruce (m. Sally Polk) gggrandson William Doctor Bruce (m. Betsey Polk), ggggrandaughter Achsah L. Bruce (m. James Parker), ggggggrandson William Bruce Parker (m. Minnie Short), ggggggrandson Bruce V. Parker (m. Lucille Chessman) and my father Walter Bruce Parker (m. Patricia Ertman). Am interested in corresponding with others in this line. In addition, I have several questions: > 1. Has anyone conclusive proof that John Bruce descended from Thomas Bruice (b. Portsoy, Aberdeenshire, SCT) and James Bruce (b. Longside, Aberdeenshire, SCT)? Where exactly in Scotland was John Bruce born? When did the family move to Leochel-Cushnie Parish, Aberdeenshire? I have just returned from Aberdeenshire and am happy to share my observations and findings. > 2. Does anyone know about the parentage of Polly Lucas, who married William Bruce, Sr.? According to LDS records, Polly's father was William Lucas, born ABT 1711 in Lancaster Co., PA. Polly and William Bruce are mentioned in a Lucas family geneaology as having received land from a Barton Lucas in the Washington, PA area. The Lucas geneaology includes a brother of Barton, William Lucas who was born in 1713/4. He fought in the Revolutionary War (despite being over 60 years old!) and died in Anne Arundel Co, MD. His wife's name was Mary and they had a son George Lucas. Polly was also called Mary. Does anyone know if this William Lucas was Polly's father? (Note that in his memoirs, Major William Bruce stated that Polly's father had been a seafarer). > 3. Am trying to learn more about Achsah Van Meter, William Doctor Bruce's aunt/mother-in-law (William married his first cousin). Achsah Van Meter married Edward Polk in Kentucky and apparently was living in Knox County, Indiana when Edward was killed in the War of 1812. According to LDS, she was born in Shelby Co., KY @ 1786, but cannot find her in any Van Meter genealogies. > Thank you for any and all information. > Doug Parker
