    1. John Bruce of Winchester Va
    2. Don D. Terry
    3. Back in December I made a posting regarding John Bruce of Winchester Va. I received about a dozen responses and appreciate your comments. I've started sorting out my data and find that I have two different spouses for John Bruce as follows: Case #1 = John Bruce married Sarah Cole in Scotland and their children were Mary, James (twin), John (twin), George, Margartet and Ann Case #2 = John Bruce married Sarah Parrell in Leochel-Cushine, Aberdeen, Scotland and that she was the daughter of Hugh Parrell and Ann Calvert. I have no references for either case and would appreciate comment in support of either marriage. Also, Case #1 is the only reference to a child named John. Does anyone know if there is a copy of the William Albin family genealogy book located at some library in Texas? There is a copy in Wisconsin but it is a little bit far from Kerrville Tx. Thanks for your response. Don D. Terry 2116 Vista Ridge Drive Kerrville Tx 78028-9137 e-mail ddterry@hilconet.com

    3. Dear Listers, Having just subscribed, I thought I might explain my connection. I am a descendant of Betsy Bruce Drake Vallandingham. It took years to find this out. I must be kind of dumb. Betsy gave three of her sons and maybe a fourth the middle name "Bruce." I think she was trying to tell future generations something. Betsy was born in Culpeper Co., VA on April 9, 1770, according to family records. Her mother was most likely Anne Nancy Bruce, the daughter of William Bruce and Elizabeth Grant of Stafford Co., VA. Henry Bruce, cousin of Betsy, mentioned her in his diary in 1818. I have an article coming out in Heritage Quest magazine in the July-August issue about Betsy's naming of her children. Tom Fiske

    1. BRUCE in Vermont
    2. I hope someone can help me with one of my many brick walls. My 2nd great grandmother was Charlotte Olivia BRUCE, b. July 1, 1831 supposedly in East Randolph, Vermont. She was married June 16, 1856 in Tunbridge, Vermont to Daniel DAVIS. She died February 9, 1914, but I don't know where. Her husband died in 1897 in Fayette, Iowa, so she may have died there, also. Her first child was born in Wisconsin, her second and third children were born in Vermont, her fourth child was born in Iowa, and I don't know where her other three children were born. Supposedly, Charlotte Olivia BRUCE's father was named John, but I have absolutely no information on him and have no clue as to who her mother was. Any help will be most appreciated. Doris A. She was b. 1764 in Charleston, SC; d. 1802 in Charleston, SC; ma. Samuel Phillips JONES. Later generations of their JONES descendants (including my mother) lived in GA. I have two lines of BRUCE ancestry before Jane Bruce who were related to King Robert the Bruce. One BRUCE line is through Jane's g-grandfather, Robert BRUCE, who was supposedly a descendant of King Robert's first cousin. I have always felt this line is a little "fuzzy", since what I have on Jane's grandfather, David Bruce, is based solely on a published genealogy, which unfortunately gives no dates or places for him, or even a spouse's name. That source is "The Wannamaker, Salley, Mackay and Bellinger Families Genealogies and Memoirs" compiled by J., Skottowe Wannamaker. (of which I have copies of a few pages-- not the entire work.) According to that work, this David's father was supposedly Robert Bruce, the 2nd Earl of Elgin. That line traces back to a Robert Bruce who was the first cousin of King Robert the Bruce. This line, at least in part, agrees with what Carol has shown above. My other BRUCE line is through the above Jane's grandmother Lady Euphemia MONTGOMERY, who was the dau. of Alexander MONTGOMERY, 9th Earl of Eglington. That line traces back through at least two lines directly to King Robert the Bruce, through his dau. Marjorie who ma. Walter Stewart. I have that Euphemia married George Lockhart of Carnwath who d. in 1731, but I have no places or dobs for either. That info. is mostly from "Peerage of Scotland" by Douglas. I would be delighted to share with Carol and/or anyone else on the BRUCE-L, who hopefully might help me firm up some of the "fuzzy" spots in my BRUCE lineage. Dexter Dexter Edge Jr. Olympia, WA

    3. Hello, This is my first posting this list, and I am looking for other researchers of this line in order to compare and share data: 1. Margaret BRUCE, born 1577, London, England, married Francis NICHOLS. Margaret was daughter of: 2. George BRUCE of Carnock, Fife Scotland, son of 3. Sir Edward BRUCE, born 1505, Blairhall, England, married Allison REID. Edward was son of 4. David BRUCE, born 1470, Clackmannan, Scotland, married Jane or Jean BLACKADDER. David was son of: 5. David BRUCE, born 1445, Clackmannan, Scotland, married Marion HERIES. David was son of: 6. John BRUCE, born 1420, Clackmannan, Scotland, married Elizabeth STEWART. None of the above is documented yet, and I hope someone can help me do just that. Thanks, Carol Martin carolmartin3@compuserve.com

    3. I have the CW pension records of Joseph alias Joseph Pierce BRUCE, b ca 1850, d 26 Dec 1900, West Nashville TN. He served w/ Co. B, 3rd TN Cav. (Union). He married Margaret DAVIS 6 Mar 1877 in Poplar Bluff MO. If this is your ancestor, I will be happy to send you a copy of these pension records. They hold some interesting anecdotal information. Unfortunately for me, this is not my ancestor, though he may be related. My gg grandfather was Joseph BRUCE, b 1824. He married Elendar Jane CHAMBERS (family records show Mary Jane CHAMBERS) in 1860. I found a Joseph P. BRUCE on the 1850 Davidson CO TN census living with a CHAMBERS family, however Jane was not there. I have 4 different birth places from various sources for my Joseph BRUCE: Scotland, Virginia, Alabama and Mississippi. I've had no luck at finding him. He was said to have been a scout working St. Louis to New Orleans, which sounds like a possible Civil War connection. The only other CW Joseph Bruce I can find was with Co. A, 3rd Inf. Bn at Memphis (CSA) and there were no service records. If anyone can help me out with my Joseph BRUCE, I would really be grateful, and would be happy to share information. 2. I have an excerpt from a family history book "Descendants of William Ballard' which lists a Mary Emma Balard 1863-1940 who married Gaston Fletcher Ellis in 1884. The article states that they had no issue but did take a teenage girl from an orphanage and gave her a home. It is this girl that I seek. Her name is Beatrice Bruce or Brust. The article stated that her whereabouts was unknown at that time and which orphanage she came from was not identified. Is there any orpanage near Greenville, WV? Is so, could someone give the name and address of it. Any other information is appreciated. Bea Hudson Hampton, VA
