I wonder if your Phoebe Kuykendal Bruce came from Sumner Co., TN. There was a Kuykendal family there in the early years -- 1800 give or take a few -- that had some pretty mean men in it. I don't recall the source, but I remember reading that two of them were literally run out of town and told never to return. The story stuck with me because Priscilla Bloodworth sued a Kuykendal man for getting her with child, and I am a Bloodworth descendant. I'm also a Bruce descendant, and during that same time period there were several Bruce brothers and their families in Sumner Co. Joyce

    3. Lou, It is the same line that I'm researching with the Patrick Bruce. Also, I've got some documentation on the Patrick Bruce line. I'll send it along later. Thomas Bruce who was christened November 6, 1664 at Fordyce Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. I have that his son John was born September 7, 1690 (it could be a christening date as I got the information second-hand) John had 5 children: Mary, married William Albin 1737; Margaret married Richard Carter; James was born in Scotland and married Margaret McMahon June 10, 1744 in Frederick County, VA. James died after August 1880, probably in KY; George married Rachel Littler, Frederick County, VA, died 1880, Frederick County, VA; and Anne married James McCoy probably 1747, died 1808 probably Uniontown, PA. James, son of John had a son James. For lots of good information on the Bruce family line, I would recommend the book "John Bruce of the Shenandoah". It includes the families of all of John's children (some are more complete than others). Carol Geiss

    3. Ok, here's another quandry! <G> My ggf, Terrill Wilkie BRUCE, son of George Osborn and Phoebe Kuykendall BRUCE, of Woodstock, Cherokee Co. GA, was in the 1850 Cherokee Co. census with his widowed mother and younger siblings. In 1852, he is in Long Shoals, Greene Co. GA where he married Martha Rebecca THIGPEN. A few years later, before 1860, he, his family, his m-i-l and her younger children moved to Sparta, Hancock Co. GA where many of them lived out their lives. Terrill's father died around 1848, and he was the eldest son. I find it odd that he would leave his mother alone with all the younger children and go so far to be married. What on earth took him to Greene Co.? Were the other BRUCES there kin???? The earliest I have that line is as follows: James, of Wolf Creek SC; James, Jr. Habersham Co. GA; George Osborn; Terrill Wilkie. That brings me to the family story. Dad said that one of his female ancestors was SO mean that she lived out in the woods alone. When she was found dead of UN-natural means, no one bothered to find out who did it, as they considered it a service to the community!!!!!!! Now, this could very well have been Phoebe Kuykendal BRUCE, as ALL her children, but one, left the area where she lived when they married. One son, Abraham, who lost an arm in the Civil War, never married, and I believe he lived with his mother. Put only the surname in the search spaces, not the first name, and your search, with the batch number will bring up everyone, with that surname, in that batch. Julia
