    1. John Bruce c1690-1748; father of Anne, son of Thomas???
    2. Diana Austring
    3. I'm new to the list, and a 5gt-granddtr of Anne BRUCE and James Thomas McCOY. I've recently received an email with some information I'd appreciate clarification on. "I also have two pages that was published by THE ROYAL BRUCE SOCIETY which was found in Knoxville, Tennessee and sent to me by another researcher. These pages were part of the McCLUNG COLLECTION, East Tennessee Historical Center, Knoxville, TN. Called SOME DESCENDANTS OF JAMES BRUCE OF ABERDEEN, it lists James Bruce b ca 1634, Longside, Aberdeen Parish, Scotland; his son Thomas Bruce, christened 6 Nov 1664, Portsoy, Fordyce Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; and eight children of Thomas: Margaret, John, Margaret, Helen, Elizabeth, Christian, Grace(Grisell),and Peter. The line of John is followed. (Anne and James McCoy are listed but their line is not carried forward.)" "The Royal Bruce Society, in a later issue, stated that THIS Thomas had been proved NOT to be the same as John's father." Can anyone enlighten me on this??? Thanks, Diana Austring ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Waiheke Island, Aotearoa (NZ)

    1. BRUCE - Norfolk VA
    2. I am looking for seveal BRUCEs in or around Norfolk. I do not know if it would be Norfolk County or Norfolk the City. However, I am looking information relating to: 1: GEORGE BRUCE who advertised in the VIRGINIA GAZETTE, dated April 20, 1775, which reads "The subscriber begs leave to inform the public that he now commands the sloop Agnes, about 1800 bushels burthen, a prime sailor, & well built, with good accomodation for passengers; he proposes to follow the country trade in common, & for the most part, Rappahannock River. He will be humbly obliged to all gentlemen who choose to honor him with their commands; he proposes to make it his delight & study to oblige all who confide in his integrity. Signed GEORGE BRUCE. N.B. He will never refuse a convenient freight to New York or Philadelphia & may at any time be heard of by directing a few lines to the care of Mrs. Ann WINTERTON in Norfolk." I am interested in knowing who this George BRUCE was, and any information relating to the sloop AGNES. There was an Ann BRUCE in Richmond Co VA who married a WINTERTON. Would this be the same Ann WINTERTON mentioned above? The second BRUCE I am interested in is John BRUCE who advertised in the VIRGINIA GAZETTE dated 1 March 1783 as follows: "John BRUCE at Norfolk advertises for sale a vessel to be launched about the end of March." Because both of these BRUCEs were involved with ships, is there a relationship between the two? Thank you very much for your time and information. Bea Hudson

    3. Hi All, I have just put my Database up at WorldConnect and would love to have anymore additions or corrections, Please take a Look. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kb5eko John Bruces' Will In the name of God amen. I John Bruce of Surry County being sick and weak but of perfect and disposing memory do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner adn form following (Wiz't) ________. I give to my son James Bruce my Negro fellow Sam and likewise eight sheep which said Negro and sheep. With what I have already let him have is in full of his part of my estate. I give to my daughter Sarah my Negro Ned with the remainder of my personal estate (escept my horse and saddle) which I give and bequeth to her son Jacob Bruce and I do appoint my said daughter Sarah Bruce and her son Jacob Bruce to be my sole Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. In witness I have hereunto put my hand and seal this the sixteenth day of August Anno Domini 1752 Jacob X Bruce Signed Sealed and Declared to be the Last Will and Testament of the said John Bruce in Presence of Thomas X Taylor David Brooke Arthur Smith It looks like Jacob George Bruce is the Grandson of John Bruce of Surry Co., VA whose will was probated in 1754. And His mother is Sarah (?Bruce). >From what I can tell Sarah's Husband could be James Bruce who died Intestate in the 1740's in Surry Co (Inventory 1747). If this is the Case it looks like we could have 2 Bruce lines to Contend with. It is hard to tell If Sarah is an actual Daughter or a Daughter in-law of John Bruce, but with Her and Jacob both being named Executors of his will and his only mentioned son not i'm inclined to believe that she is his Daughter Jerry E. Davis Jr.

For right now though, I'd just like to know: In which part of Pennsylvania was my Samuel BRUCE born in 1818. 1. Early Bruce Genealogy
    2. Dear Bruce Fans from Jean Smallwood, I list below five sources (which do not agree) for the "early" BRUCE FAMILY. Let me know which you think is the most correct lineage. I will send my "Comparison Chart" by snailmail if you request. FIVE SOURCES FOR FAMILY OF BRUCE First Source-ROBERT THE BRUCE FAMILY- Book- Signers of the Magna Carta, 1215. See Clan Bruce (www.Tartans.com/clans/bruce.html) BRUSSE, Earl of Caithness and Sunderland, died in 1031 A.D. He married Ostrida of Gothland, and they had Rognvald (listed below). ROGNVALD (died in 1046 A.D.) was the General in the Army of King of Olaf in Norway. Through his second wife, Felicia of Normandy, he had a son, Brusi, who as far as can be found was the first to be called "Robert de Brusse". ROBERT de BRUSSE (Brusi) married Emma of Brittany, circa 1020 A.D. in Normandy. Note-See Comparision of Sources in Smallwood/Carter Bk. for the column which follows this lineage. HAD ROBERT de BRUSSE, 2nd. came with William the Conqueror from Normandy in 1066. married Agnes St. Clair (died 1080). Robert died in 1094 HAD ADAM de BRUSE, went to England in 1050 as attendant to Queen Emma, daughter of Richard I of Normandy. He married Emma Ramsay. HAD ROBERT de BRUSSE, 3rd who was born in 1078 and died in 1141.He married Agnes Bruce (Agnes Paynell) of Annandale, a distant cousin. HAD ROBERT BRUCE of Annandale married Euphemia. HAD ROBERT BRUCE II (Robert le Meschin), Lord of Annandale, died in 1194. He married Isabel of Scotland, daughter of William the Lion, King of Scotland HAD WILLIAM BRUCE- 3rd Baron of Annanadale, died in 1215. He married Christina HAD ROBERT BRUCE, 4th Baron of Annandale, died in 1245. He married Isobel of Huntingdone who died in 1252. HAD SIR ROBERT BRUCE, Lord of Annandale was born 1210, died on March 31, 1295. In May, 1240 married Isabella de Clare who was born on Nov. 2, 1226 HAD SIR ROBERT BRUCE, Lord of Annandale, born in July 1243 and died before June 14, 1302. In 1271, married, first, Marjorie (Marjory) Carrick, Countess Carrick. HAD ROBERT the BRUCE, Earl of Carrick, Lord Brus, King of Scotland. Was born on July 11 1274 and died on June 7, 1329. He married, first, Isabel Mar, who died in 1297; second marriage to Elizabeth of Ulster. Second Source-ROBERT THE BRUCE by Ronald McNair Scott, 1992 Scott writes: pg. 10 "The Bruces were members of that Anglo-Norman elite through whom the kings of England and Scotland maintained their sovereign rule. Reputedly descended from Lodver, the Norse Earl of Orkney, in the 10th century, the Bruces first made their impact on the ritish Isles when Adam de Brus, whose grandfather had migrated to Normandy, accompanied William the Conqueror to England." Note It is not clear from Scott if Adam or his grandfather accompanied William the Conqueror. 1 Grandfather of Adam de Brus (Bruce) -unnamed 2 Father of Adam-unnamed 3 Adam 4 Robert-d. 1141, 1st Lord of Annadale m. Agnes Pagnel had 2 sons: 5 Adam -d. 1172 5 Robert-d. 1196 2nd Lord of Annadale -had 2 sons: 6 Robert-d.1191, 3rd. Lord of Annadale 6 *William-had son 7 Robert-d.1245 married Isobel (d. 1252), daug. of David (grandson of King David I)- had son 8 Robert, the Competitor-d. 1295 m. Isobel de Clare-had son 9 Robert -d. 1304, m. Marjorie of Carrick-had son 10 Robert, King of Scotland m. 1st Isabella of Mar and m. 2nd.Elizabeth de Burgh *Note-Lady Dame Beckwith Bruce, a daughter of William is shown in the charts of Beckwith/Rhine/Smallwood. Here, as in many other charts, only sons (not daughters) are listed. Third Source-HISTORY OF CLEVELAND (England) by Rev. John Graves-pub. 1808-reprint 1972 Note-I list Roman numerals as appears in my charts. They are listed as in the F&W encyclopedia. 1 Robert de Brus d. 1141-(Robert II) came to England with the Conqueror. Note-Other sources (including Smallwood data ) show Robert I (d. 1094) came to England with William the Conqueror. It would seem this Robert also accompanied them. Robert (d. 1141 had by conquest the Lordships of Skelton, Marske, Uplyum, Brotton, Danby, Leventon, Yam. He settled in the Yorkshire area of England and married Agnes, d/o Fulke Paynell with whom he had the Manor of Carleton in Balme. John Graves also lists a William d Brus ( brother of Robert d. 1141) d. 1155, Prior of Guisbro and buried in the Chapterhouse in Guisbro. 2 Adam was Lord of Skelton, Danby. He married Ivetta, d/o William de Arches. Widow of R. De Falmville. 1. John & Lavicia BRUCE (Vicie - Vicey)
    2. I am looking for the parents of Florence BRUCE. I do not have definates for her, but found conflicting info on her birth so between 1873-1880ish is the two dates. She married George POTTS around 1895 in Hickman, TN. I found an obituary, for her that said her parents were John & Vicie (Nelson) BRUCE. I have not found any proof other than the obit to link these two together. I found a headstone in the same cematery of Florence for BRUCE John 1854-1921 / Lavicia 1856-1923. Again believing this is her parents. It is believe Florence had a sister Callie, she may have had a brother Ben & sister Ellen also. I can not find a John & Lavicia (Vicie) in the TN census. For the 1880 census (maybe she was not born yet & sibling are younger. But I can not find them in the 1900 census either, I know she was married young, and figure this is why I can not locate her. But if the sibling were younger I should be able to locate them. Needless to say of course I need the 1890 census. Does anyone know anything on this family? Like maybe where they came from and who is who. Maybe they used different names? Thank you for any & all replies. Just Diggin'
