Dear Listers, I am descended from Betsy Bruce Drake who married a Vallandingham in Scott Co., KY about 1787. Betsy gave 4 of her sons the Bruce middle name. There was Henry Bruce Val., George Bruce Val., John Bruce Val., and William Bruce Val. Betsy had two daughters, Anne and Mary. These names all coincide with names of a VA Bruce family. A Henry Bruce was Betsy's cousin, he said in his diary. Thus, I have concluded that Anne Bruce was Betsy's mother. Anne's family's records do not show this marriage, but they do show that Anne died at the right time in or near Culpeper Co., VA William Bruce of Stafford would have been Betsy's grandfather. Since the Vallandinghams were very religious, it appears they married whenever the opportunity offered itself, rather than shacked up. Betsy was born in Culpeper, VA, where the Henry Bruce family held sway (between there and Stafford). So My Betsy Bruce Drake was either a Bruce or was severely demented. Tom the bewildered
Seeking information on a Norma Arlene Bruce who gave birth to me May 05, 1959 at Richmond, Virginia at Retreat Hospital. She relinquished both me and my brother to same family of adoptive parents. My brother was born in December 1960. My problem is that the birth's took place in Virginia, and we were whisked to New Jersey for a private adoption. Neither Virginia nor New Jersey seems to have any information on us.........even the non-identifying and medical we need. If you have any information on her or her family, please contact us so we can find her. Sincerely, Katie Hardbark2@aol.com

From "HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY," Vol. I, page 679-680. Brant & Fuller, 1890. GEORGE W. BRUCE George W. Bruce, M.D., a leading physician and prominent citizen of Moundsville, is a native of Frederick county, Va., born July 17, 1827. His father, John Bruce, a native of Scotland, came to this country in 1818, and was here married to Sydney Smith, a native of Virginia. He taught school for many years; was for nine years president of the Winchester & Potomac railroad, and subsequently engaged in farming. He died December 31, 1855, aged about sixty- three years, and his wife died February, 1874, aged about eighty. Both were members of the Episcopal church. Of their eight children there are, besides the doctor, three living, E. C., of Winchester, Va.; J. D., of Clark county, Va., and J. S., a physician at Colorado county, Tex. Dr. Bruce received his first academic training at the Virginia Military institute at Lexington, where he was three years, and he then attended medical lectures at Winchester, going from there to the University of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, where he was graduated in medicine in 1848. He first practiced at Covington, Ky., one year, and then came to Moundsville in 1849, where he has ever since been engaged in the practice. Winning the entire confidence of the community in his skill and character, he has occupied from the first a high standing in his profession and in the personal esteem of the people. For eighteen years he has served as physician to the penitentiary, and in the city council has done efficient duty. He is a member of the Masonic order. In 1850, Dr. Bruce was married to Mary Burley, who died in 1866, aged thirty-five. Two children of this union are living, Meta and J. Douglas. In 1867 the doctor was wedded to Ella Burley, and they have one child, Mary Louisa. Mrs. Bruce is a member of the Episcopal church. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Tom Webmaster of: The American Family Generations: 1600 to 2000 Currently with 20 separate databases on line and adding more every week.
