Time for a repost. I've posted before with no luck. If anyone has any information please share. Also if anyone has any suggestion for possible avenues of research please help me out, I'm really stuck here. William Bruce was born in either 1797 or 1800 by census dates. Also by the census information he was born in either Virginia or "at sea (Scottish)." The at sea entries outnumber the entries for Virginia. My speculation is that he was born at sea in route to Virginia from Scotland. He married Hannah Mease (Mies, Meese, Meece) in Pennsylvania between 1830 and 1832. Their first child was born in Nittney Valley, Centre County, PA in 1833. They, or at least he, moved to Illinois around 1859 when the last of their children was born. From there I know some of the children moved on to Iowa and other points west. Any researchers in Virginia? Any ideas where to look? Any and all clues appreciated. Thanks, Sheri Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Can anyone tell me anything about Margaret C. Bruce b about 1835, sister of Sarah Caradine Barrett b 1832. All I know now is that she probably married a Bruce in Neshoba Co. She may have been the Margaret Bruce living with the John L. Harris family in Newton Co. in 1870. In 1900 she was living with her sister in the home of Ruffin Barrett in Simpson Co. According to a family story she shot her husband in an argument about his desire to fight in the civil war..don't know if this was the Bruce or a previous husband. Sarah and Margaret were part Indian. There is at least a possibilty that Margaret was the Margaret married to Benjamin Bird Barrett, also of Neshoba Co. Bird was the brother of Sarah's husband, Reuben W. Barrett. Bird and Margaret split up for some reason about the time of the Civil War, Bird remarried and went to Texas. Thanks for any help anyone can give concerning Margaret and her story. Kathleen Garner

Several months ago, I corresponded with a list member whose name and address have been misplaced. He sent me a photograph of a man whom he identified as John Wesley Bruce, one of my husband's ancestors. He also said he had information on some marriages between the Bruces and the Burleys. I would like to get in touch with him. Thank you. Frances Bruce
XENIA DAILY GAZETTE AND TORCHLIGHT THURSDAY EVENING - JUNE 30, 1892 XENIA, OHIO GREENE COUNTY WILSON / BRUCE A quiet but very happy wedding was solemnized at the home of Mrs. Sarah BRUCE on West Church Street this morning, when at 8:30 o'clock, her only daughter, Bessie, was united in marriage with Rev. John B. WILSON, a recent graduate of theological seminary here, and one of the most brilliant young preachers in the U.P. Church. The ceremony was performed by Rev. BUCHANAN in the presence of only a few friends, including the faculty of the Seminary and their wives, and the U.P. ministers in this city. The fair young bride looked handsome in a dress of light mauve henrietta, with bengaline and chiffon trimmings. Immediately after the sincere congratulations of those present, an elegant breakfast was served by RADER, the caterer, and at 9:55, the bridal party left for Wooster, O., where they will spend two weeks among relatives, and then return to Columbus, where Rev. WILSON has recently been appointed pastor of the Second U.P. Church. For the present they will reside on Highland Avenue and a parsonage will soon be erected for them. As a testimonial of love and esteem, they were the recipients of quite a number of costly gifts. Among them being a check for $50 from a large circle of friends, who wish them all joy and prosperity in their new relation. Debbie I have no connection with the BRUCE surname. I just found this article and thought it might be of interest to someone on this list. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hello listers. I recently enquired about the BRUCE home in Quincy, County Gadsden, Florida and received some excellent photographs and history relevant to the house. However I did not make contact with any relatives. However some scraps of information may help. My great-granduncle, JAMES BRUCE and his wife Laura [nee Turner] were the last Bruce residents of this historic home, built in the 1820s and currently fully restored. They lived in it from 1915 until 1921 when it was sold. I have information that James Bruce had a 'cousin' in the area whose name was GIFFORD RHODES, and in a pre-1920 photograph of the home is a young lady whose name was LILLY MAY BRUCE RHODES. I would be very pleased to make contact with any descendants of this BRUCE-RHODES family. Regards, Dave Collins. dave.clnz@xtra.co.nz
Seeking connection to John Bailey Bruce, b. 1870? m. Blanche Harper, b. 1875? c. Bailey Harper Bruce b. 10-16-1894 John Bailey Bruce was a cattle buyer or transporter from Oklahoma to Kansas City, Mo. His son, Bailey Harper Bruce was born on one of these train trips to Chicago. Family lore has said that John was originally from the hills of Kentucky or Tennessee and Johns father immigrated from Scotland to that area. Considering that the Bailey name may have been handed down the way the Harper name was, it might be assumed that John came from a Bruce and Bailey union. Interesting note: The William Bailey Bruce, b. 1820 in Va. line has several similiarities to my line, but it needs clarification. William Bailey Bruce. b. 1820 in Va. (son of Lemuel Bruce and Rebecca Bailey, b. 1829? Ky.) m. Elizabeth Cassandra Philpot c. Lemuel Bailey Bruce, Jr. b. 1849?, d. 1929? in Oklahoma. m. Lillie Florence Harper, b. 1854?, d. 1943 also in Oklahoma. Does anyone have a connection to this family line? Because of these possible connections, could there have been marriage of 2 Bruce brothers and 2 Harper sisters? James Bruce was an early settler of Frederica, St. Simons Island Georgia. His date and place of birth are unknown though he would have been born before 1745. His date of death is also unknown but it was prior to 1789. The names of his parents are unknown as well as the name of his wife. I only know of two children: Elizabeth Bruce who married James Moore of Glynn County and Rebecca Bruce who married Samuel Wright. There was a Thomas Bruce, Mariner in Savannah at that time, but it is unknown if they were related. There was also a Thomas Bruce and a Daniel Bruce in Liberty County during this time but again, no connection has been found. I would like to find any additional information about James Bruce, my 5th great-grandfather. _______________________________________________ Why pay for something you could get for free?
