    2. I am looking for ancestors, decedents and/or siblings of Silas Bruce from SC. This is not the Silas Bruce that died in Edgefield, SC in about 1830. I have already checked him out. My Silas was born in about 1800 and married Mary (Polly) Ferguson. They were living in Lawrence Co., AL by 1839. I have found 4 children Spartan Bruce b 1826 in SC; married Mary A. Looney April 30, 1849, ( my gggrand parents); James Bruce b 1839 in AL; Anderson b in AL and Nancy. Nancy was married at least 3 times, 1st to Jesse Kitchen in 1835; 2nd Elon A. Southerland in 1843; 3rd Reason R Barnes or Burnes in 1850. Silas and Mary are on the 1860 census but not on the 1870 census. I am sure they are dead by 1870 but can't find where they are buried. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Linda Aubrey Springfield, OR laubrey1@aol.com

    1. BRUCE from CAITHNESS
    2. Dave Collins
    3. Here are my Bruce ancestors, commencing with my g-g-g-g-g-grandparents. All events up until generation 4 began emigrating are in Caithness, mainly Latheron and Watten parishes. The emigration was mainly to NZ and to Florida, with one or two to Australia and one to South Africa, and perhaps two to Canada. I have good data for many more descendants of Walter Bruce. I would be delighted to make contact with any Bruce/Gunn/McKay/Sutherland/Forbes/Munro/etc who may be descended from any of these. A particular member who wrote some excellent family history was Reverend George Sutherland whose document dates from 1909/1912, and was updated after his death in 1937. 1. Bruce descendants in Sumner Co., TN
    2. John Bruce and his wife Mary Smith migrated to VA from Edinburgh, Scotland, in about 1760 and settled in Culpeper Co., VA. Their children were James, John, William, Robert, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Mary. In about 1792 the family moved to Wilkes Co., NC, where John, Benjamin, and Mary died. In about 1795 the family, along with the children of those who died in Wilkes Co., moved to Sumner Co., TN. Members of these families migrated on to Mississippi and Illinois as well as to Bedford Co., Tennessee. Some descendants of William Bruce and James Bruce remained in Sumner County until the late 1890s and early 1900s. Along with their Perry cousins, some went of Coal County, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, some to Adair County, Missouri, and some to Douglass County, Wisconsin. There were other Bruce families in Sumner County beginning in the 1790s, but I don't have any information about their migrations. They disappear from the county census after 1880. I would appreciate any help available in learning more about these descendants. Joyce

We even have a Missing Bruces page prompted by a search for an Ignatius Bruce. We also have a few pictures! Our oldest picture, I think, is of William Alexander Bruce, great-grandson of our James Bruce of Wolf Creek, taken in the early 1850s. We also have a few links to webpages of other Bruce Families that we've found that may get someone else the info that they are looking for. If you have any addition/corrections/family to add, please let me know. Thanks!!! Judy (gg-granddaughter of William Alexander Bruce)

I have traced mine back the year 1740. Specific place of departure and arrival not known. As with most of us, they came from Scotland, I am only guessing but I place my ancestors arrival somewhere around VA up to maby PA. The only thing I can say with certainty is the date of Emigration. 3. Hi Bob, Sorry, no help from this West Virginian... I think you wrote me awhile back and asked the same question. The more letters I read the more I realize just how HUGE the Bruce Tree is. Canada, Austrailia, South America, Ga., La, Ky., Indiana...etc..etc.. This is one big clan. It is no wonder we as a group, have so much trouble tracing lineage, what with all the "same name" syndrome and then seeing that a birthplace or deathplace took place in an area that looks like there must be a connection just because they lived in the same area as someone else's line. Here is what I have (Which isn't much): Name: John Bruce ---------------------------------------- Birth: 7 Sep 1690 Portsoy, Baiff Co. Scotland Death: 4 Nov 1747 Fredrick Co. Virginia Notes for Sarah Parrell Have also seen her last name listed as Coles... Notes for James (Child 2) Ref: My first recollection that I have of my ancestors was hearing my grandfather, James Bruce, telling that himself and a younger brother, George Bruce, came from Scotland about the year 1740. My grandfather located in Winchester, Virginia. He was a house carpenter by trade and I have heard him say that he built the first frame house that was ever built in that town. About the year 1744 he married Margaret McMahon and moved to the north branch of the Potomac in Maryland. He continued there following his trade and farming until he raised a large family of children. ---------------------------------------- Last Modified: 18 Jan 2001 Created: 20 Feb 2001 (*) George Bruce.... Given the date of birth of your Bemjamin B. it would be possible for him to be a child to George, however I have no information on George except the little piece above. (**) John Bruce...All I have is listed above (***) James Bruce is my direct ancestor and I have no listing of any Benjamin Bruce. Of James' children the oldest Child, William, who was born in 1745, was married in 1771. The other two male children, James and George(believed to be twins), were born and married to late to be the parents of the man you seek. James b.1760; M. 1778.....George b.1760, no marriage date available. In my direct line I have only one listing of a Bruce Daughter marrying another "Bruce" and this took place in the 1820's. They were Polly Lucas Bruce d/o William Bruce Jr. and Sarah Polk. Polly Married a man by the name of Squire Bruce, so that of course is of no help to you either.
