    2. Bruce Bedford
    3. As there has been a lot of movement on the "BRUCE" lineage and some seem to think that there line comes from Scotland, may be they should look at the Cleveland / Yorkshire area as this is where Robert de Brus settled when he came to England from Normanby with William the Conqueror around 1066 later the name was changed by deed of parliament to Bruce, it was one of his sons that went to Scotland and married the daughter of their King. There are other theories to on when the name firstly came to England but this is the most popular one. However there are still Bruces living in Yorkshire Durham and Cleveland. One of the best authorities on the Bruce name is Jean Smallwood as she has done many years of research on the name, the last I heard she was writing a book on the research she has done on the Bruce name. 3. Delilah and Sarah are my ancestors. I've often wondered what they would think of our modern world after all they endured. There is a wonderful new book about the Polk family which includes the account: "Polk's Folly" by William Polk. Available through Barnes & Noble. Delilah's husband Charles moved to Indiana several years after Delilah died in 1798. He was the oldest elected delegate to Indiana's constitutional convention in 1816. A Polk relative recently forwarded to me a 40 year old article about the Indiana Polks which, among other things, includes a picture of Charles' grave. 3. Hi -- I too descend from this John Bruce. His ggg granddaughter Achsah Bruce (John - James (b. Leochel Cushnie 1720) m. Margaret McMahon - William m. Polly Lucas - William m. Sarah Polke - William D. m. Betsy Polke) married my gg grandfather James Parker. I hadn't before seen a definitive statement that Sarah's maiden name was Parrel, only speculation because of the reference to "my kinsman JB" in Hugh Parrel's will. I've been to Leochel Cushnie -- a tiny hamlet, very remote and rural part of Aberdeenshire -- 30+ miles west of Aberdeen. My line is through their son Benjamin Bruce, b. 1802 in Wilkes Co. NC and d. after 1870 in Gallatin Co. IL. I would appreciate any information about the migration of this family from NC to IL. I know that my GGG Grandfather Benjamin was a minister, m#1 Jane Trousdale, 24 Jan. 1822, m#2 Abigail Trousdale, 24 Nov. 1842. I am looking for verification of: 1) the children born to Benjamin and Jane 2) whether Benjamin married a third time to a Sarah ? (possibly Yates). 1. Ky/Tn Bruces
    2. The only Bruce in my line that I know for sure about is my gr-grandmother, MAHULDIA BRUCE. She married JOHN WESLEY FURGERSON (or, perhaps Ferguson, Farguson, or some such original spelling). From all I can find out, they were both born in Tennessee, but I don't know what county. I believe from studying census records in the 1820s, 30s, 40s, that they may have been from Lincoln County, TN. There were a lot of Bruces and Fergusons living near each other and I can identify ages of m/f that would have matched my John and Mahuldia. They were born in 1815/16. They appear first in the Hopkins County, Ky census in 1860, but one of their children was born in Hopkins County in 1854. I have been unable to find them in the 1850 census in either Kentucky or Tennessee. I have been trying to connect Mahuldia to Bruces who were in Hopkins County. According to census records, the following were there in the following years: 1820 Abner, Cader, Dunning, John, Jonathan, Milly 1830 Abner, John, Cader 1840 Abner, Cader, Milly, Jeremiah 1850 Thomas Bruce (21, from Ireland, living in household of David Clark) Abner Bruce, Jr., 60, from North Carolina Andrew Bruce, 27, b Kentucky Henry Bruce, 22, from Ireland, living in household of Nathaniel Medlock 1860 Jeramiah Bruce, 41, born in Ky Cader Bruce,. 20, born in Kentucky Andrew Bruce, 39, born in Ky There are others in the 1860 census, I'm sure, but I don't have a complete copy of it. If anyone can connect any of these Bruces to their Bruces, I'd be appreciative. I have not been able to connect my MAHULDIA BRUCE to any of them but do believe that there was some relationship. I do not know anything about my JOHN FURGERSON's ancestors, either. Thanks. Joyce
