Hi Mary I checked the 1920 Federal Census and found 5 William Bruce born in Scotland (index is incomplete though). I was not able to find any that had a wife with the name of Helen. Not sure if this will help.... but it looks about right age, location of birth and is a widower. Bruce, William Age: 64 Year: 1920 Birthplace: Scotland Race: White State: Illinois County: Cook Township: Chicago He was living there with a son named William age 31- b. Scotland, daughter Abigail age 26 b. IL, son Frank C. age 22, b. IL, and an aunt (?) Barclay, Abigail age 47 - b. Scotland. It says that William Sr. is a Manager of a Seed Co., William Jr. is an Electrician - Seed Co. , Abigail is a stenographer - Seed Co., Frank is an Electrician for the Electric Co. and Aunt Abigail keeps house for them. Sorry I could not have been more definititve. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Chuderski Webmaster of The American Family Generations http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prairie/5121 Now with over 50 free databases on line and always adding more. Hi list. I am still looking for my g grandfather William Bruce (listed as WR Bruce on some records). He was born around Aug of 1867 or 1866 in Scotland. He married Helen Cooper of Brechin Angus Scotland. I show them in New York City in 1888 but I do not know when they came over. Daughter Mary (my grandmother) born in 1888 and son William born in 1894. I show them returning from a trip to Scotland in 1895 on the Ellis Island records. They show that they were not US citizens in 1895. I next show them living in Jersey City, NJ. Any help would be much appreciated. Mary Jones TX US

Can anyone identify the parents of William Bruce and siblings outlined below -- or the daughters of Joseph Bruce -- BRUCE. Based on evidence from a letter which appears to be dated Feb1879 and posted from Glasgow, William Bruce appears to have emigrated from Scotland leaving behind a sister Elizabeth (unmarried and living in Belfast), and two brothers married and living in Glasgow. One brother was Joseph, the other is unnamed. Both had children. Joseph had two daughters both married. William Bruce married Ellen Reed (see below) on 6 February 1855 in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA and had two children, William (b. 1859) and Mary Anne (b. 1861). REED. Ellen Reed (b. Nov 1834 and d. c1914) had two sisters and a brother William. A second brother, William Lowell (b. 6 Nov 1835), apparently died in infancy. All emigrated to Philadelphia. One sister married ------ Erskine, and had at least one daughter, Mary. Her other sister, Anne (Margaret Anne), married (1) John Cruckshank living in Kensington, Philadelphia about 1853. At his death she and her son Robert (Cruckshank) moved in with her sister Ellen in 1862. Anne later remarried (2) Adam "Ad" Miller/Millar in 1865 by who she had two children. Her daughter Annie (Anne Mary) married James Rowley McCoach on 6 Jun 1872 and Adam.

On her death, she was buried beside her husband in Cavan. No headstones or records can be found. Many of their descendants are buried in the Devitts Cemetery, near Blackstock, Cartwright Twp., Durham Cty. John and Mary were my gggrandparents.
