I know he was married twice and had children by both wives. My grandmother, Freda Irene Bruce was one of four daughters he had by his second wife (Anna Mary McKnight). I don't remember his first wife's name. I have copies of patents he filed for and received for a steam powered threashing machine in the early 1900's. He never was able to get financing to set up any manufacturing process for the thing, though. I've often been curious where the middle name of "Wesley" came from. Many Methodist families named children "Wesley" in honor of the founder of the Methodist movement in England, John Wesley. But, a family by the name of Bruce ought to have been from Scotland and ought to have been Presbyterian. I know that my grandmother Irene Bruce's family was connected to the Church of Christ in Noble and Monroe Counties. Churches of Christ emerged from a movement begun by a Presbyterian named Campbell in the early 1800's. That doesn't explain the "Wesley" name, however. I'll certainly let you know of any information I might find about Stephen and Matilda. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and am able to drive to Noble and Monroe and Belmont counties fairly easily so I will be checking around down there. Kerry

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XOG.2ACIB/1235.1.1 Message Board Post: My search for information regarding Stephen and Matilda Bruce has not been very fruitful, in fact it's been frustrating. I can't seem to find any record of them after 1850 census info, and have no idea who either of their parents or siblings were. The reason I know her maiden name was Paris was because it was listed on their daughter Catherine's death certificate, which was filled in by her husband so I'm assuming that's correct (he should know, shouldn't he?) Do you know anything about their children? By the way, Catherine and Peter named one of their sons James Wesley. I know from Newspaper abstracts that Stephen Bruce was still in Monroe County in at least 1863, because the paper lists Simon Bruce as sending (his father) Stephen Bruce $20 from wherever he was serving as a Civil War soldier. I also know that Catherine had a brother Thomas; their families lived next to each other for a couple of censuses. The 1850 census lists these three children (Catherine, Simon, and Thomas,) and--John! So now I know a little more about him. I would desperately like to find out about Stephen and Matilda's parents, though. I've seen some Bruce's and Paris's, but can't seem to connect them, especially since the pre-1850 censuses don't list family members, just heads-of-households. I will write your contact information on my Bruce folder and if I come across anything about them, I'll pass it on! Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Jenny

One of their daughters was Freda Irene (b.1898) who married Roy Dewey KING (b. 1898). Their only child was my deceased father. I didn't know until I saw your post that Matilda's birth name was PARIS. In fact, that is what I found years ago at the National Archives: SOUTH CAROLINA 1850 CENSUS, p. 20 BRUCE, Charles of Anderson Co., page 175, Western Dist. There are at least two by the name of James listed in the 1850 Census of Anderson Co., SC. Harriett's half-brothers were: Everett (b. c1843) & Abraham. Both appear to be listed in the 1850 Census of Anderson Co., SC. Harriett & her sisters, Mary Anne & Caroline, are said to have been deaf mutes. All three of them married. He may be the only early Greenville Co. BRUCE of whose origins we have sure knowledge. "In the past Benjamin has been identified as a son of Charles BRUCE, Sr. This appears to have been in error. Benjamin is not in association with the family of Charles BRUCE. "Benjamin BRUCE married Mary EDWARDS, daughter of John EDWARDS, at Fauquier Co., VA on 25 Dec. 1787. John EDWARDS was bondsman. It appears that he left the area at an early date, perhaps following his sale in 1821 of the land at Enoree River to Aaron Kemp.
