I'm looking for the parents of John BRUCE, b. 30 Apr 1748, Augusta, Pittsylvania Co. VA; married about 28 June, 1775 [bond] Charlotte Co. VA to Elizabeth CLAY. John died 13 April 1827, Garrard Co. KY and Elizabeth died 24 Feb 1832, Garrard Co. KY. Their daughter, Sophia BRUCE married James Palmer, believe abt. 1808 in Garrard Co. KY. John is supposedly a son of one of the Refugee Highlander soldiers who escaped after the battle of Culloden Moor in 1745 and took passage for America. Have no proof of this. Donna, thanks for the offer to do look-ups in the Bruce book. It is greatly appreciated by all of us. My Bruce brick wall is Luvicy/Lavicy/Lavisa, born 1798 in Georgia. She married Obediah Nix, about 1819 in Tennessee (their first child Mary Arminda Nix was born in 1820). They left Madison Co. Tennessee in 1828 and went to Brown/Schuyler Co. Illinois where they were on the 1830, 40 & 50 census, and they then came with the family to Texas. I have information on a Manning (Manon) A. Bruce in the 1840 thru 80 census in Illinois. He was born about 1810 in Tennessee. He married Mrs. Jane Phenix Campbell in Illinois. Her brother, Preston Kemper Phenix married Obediah and Luvicy's oldest daughter (and are my ancestors). I believe Manning is a brother to Luvicy as he is on land papers with Obediah. Also, I believe there may be a sister who married a Turley Hopper and died about 1853 in Madison Co. TN. Family story is that Luvicy's father was an A. Bruce (Anderson Bruce possibly???) and her mother was an Adair, possibly first name beginning with an M. As her first daughter was Mary this is believable. Also, Luvicy's second son was William Anderson. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of information on the Nix side but nothing on Luvicy. If you have time to do this check, please do not feel rushed to do it, do it as you time permits. Once again, thanks for the offer. Is there anything in your book about John Bruce who married Elizabeth I believe Hamilton. He died in Kentucky but his children went on to Mississippi. His daughter Eleanor (Nelly) married Wilson Burton in Ky. Eleanor gives her birthplace as MD. I think maybe Prince George Co. John and Elizabeth had a number of children, most had ordinary names, but one son was named Williamson Bruce. That should be a clue.
