Yes, William Hays Broyles married Susan Gilreath in 1878. They lived for a time in Whitley Co. but eventually moved west. You can read about their family at the following site: http://users.rcn.com/deeds/broyles/html/d0006/g0000033.htm#I511 In the 1880 census I did not notice any particular relationship of the Stephens children to William or Susan. It's reasonable to assume they are orphans and related, but unfortunately that does not make it so. I checked William's brothers and sisters for a Stephens marriage but came up empty. I'm afraid I don't have any information on Susan's side. By the way, the 1880 census mistakenly lists their birthplace as PA. I've seen cases where they used ditto marks rather than writing in the name of the state, and they got carried away with the ditto marks. Someone earlier in lists was born in PA and they dittoed their way down the page, missing the transition back to another state. Ideas: 1. James Stephens might be found in the 1870 census of Whitley or Campbell Cos. 2. Another thought is to check William's 1880 neighbors for other Stephens children. You might be able to narrow the age of the kids' parents by this method. If James is the eldest you'd expect to be able to find a Stephens marriage c. 1869. Be sure to check the Whitley and Campbell Co. marriages for Stephens marriages. 4. An oddball thought is that Susan's father died and her mom remarried to a Stephens, in which case the kids are her half-siblings. troublzup@aol.co m To: BROYLES-L@rootsweb.com Sent by: cc: gc-gateway@roots Subject: [BROYLES] W.H. Gilreath (my grandmothers line) b. abt 1860 d/o William Wesley and Sarah Jane Gregory Gilreath married to a W. H. Broyles 4 April 1878 in Scott Co., Tn. (per Scott Co., marriages). Could this be the William Broyles and wife Susan in the 1880 Whitley census who had James, Manda and Martha Stephens in the household? The ages and time frames would work. Any help here Broyles or Gilreath researchers would be so appreciated.
