This has been an interesting thread. Roy is correct that it is possible someone with the name Broyles/Briles came to this country after Johannes (or, much more likely, that they were given that name upon arrival). That we have not yet encountered this does not mean that we won't at some point in the future. But I think we miss an important point and that is that there are plenty of people carrying the Broyles/Briles name who are not, or might not be, related by blood to the immigrant. Adopted children are one route, and the descendants of slaves are another.
